Founded in 1987, the Northwest Symphony Orchestra (NWSO) has established itself as a prominent figure in the American music scene, celebrated for its dedication to showcasing contemporary northwest composers alongside a broad repertoire of orchestral music. Under the baton of Music Director Anthony Spain, the NWSO has gained national recognition, featuring on National Public Radio and NBC's Today Show. The orchestra's discography includes five acclaimed CDs, with recordings on the KOCH and Albany labels receiving high praise from critics, including being named CD of the month by Guitare Classique in France. The NWSO's mission emphasizes the performance and promotion of music by contemporary northwest composers while also educating the public on the full spectrum of orchestral works. This commitment has led to the performance of over 150 works by local composers, earning the orchestra numerous accolades, such as the first place national American Prize in 2017 and eight ASCAP awards for Programming of Contemporary Music. Throughout its history, the NWSO has collaborated with a diverse array of internationally renowned artists, including Natalie Cole, Alice in Chains, and members of Heart, further establishing its reputation for eclectic and innovative programming. The orchestra's dedication to both regional composers and community engagement has positioned it as a leading force in the American orchestral landscape.
