Experience the powerful journey from darkness to light by two Nordic composers who were touched by the warmth of the Mediterranean. Danish composer Carl Nielsen depicts the movement of the sun in his Helios Overture, while Jean Sibelius lets his Second Symphony move from darkness to triumph, rendering it a symbol of Finland’s fight for independence. Micah Wilkinson solos in the powerhouse Arutiunian Trumpet Concerto.

Kick off the season with this technicolor concert, starting with the brilliant fanfare of the Light Cavalry Overture, the vibrant and kinetic rhythms of the Symphonic Dances from West Side Story, and the miraculous transformation of a Spanish dance in Ravel’s Bolero.

Swing back in time to the Jazz Age! When jazz met classical in the 1920s and 30s, it created irreverent masterpieces such as Milhaud's Creation of the World and Ibert's Divertissement. MTS's own Principal Trumpet Andrew Gignac, a double threat on classical and jazz, will make you swoon in jazz standards such as "Embraceable You" and Puttin' on the Ritz".
