Piedmont Wind Symphony

Winston-Salem, NC, United States

Founded in 1989 by Rob Simon with support from the Arts Council of Winston-Salem & Forsyth County, the Piedmont Wind Symphony (PWS) held its inaugural performance in 1990. Established with the ambition to deliver exceptional performances of the standard wind ensemble repertoire in the style of Dr. Frederick Fennell and the Eastman Wind Ensemble, PWS emphasizes a unique sound achieved by limiting the number of players per part. The ensemble covers a wide range of musical styles, from Renaissance to Contemporary, and includes challenging works, classics for woodwind and brass choirs, and new pieces by living composers. Drawing musicians from the Piedmont Triad area of northwest North Carolina, PWS boasts a diverse group of high-caliber professionals with varied backgrounds in music education, performance, and other musical endeavors. Under the leadership of Rob Simon for 25 years, the symphony hosted numerous guest artists, enhancing the musical landscape of Winston-Salem. After Simon, Matthew Troy took over until early 2020, known for his innovative programming and community engagement. Following a brief hiatus due to the pandemic, Mark Norman assumed the role of Music Director, introducing a new logo and a revitalized mission to reach diverse audiences through collaborations and performances in new venues. As the only professional wind band between Atlanta and Washington, DC, PWS continues to invite community members to experience the power of live music.
