The San Francisco Gay Men's Chorus (SFGMC), established in 1978, is renowned for being the first organization of its kind, inspiring the formation of LGBTQ+ choruses globally. Born from a spontaneous gathering on the steps of San Francisco City Hall during a candlelight vigil for Harvey Milk and George Moscone, SFGMC has since evolved into a powerful voice for LGBTQ+ rights and community support. Over its rich history, the chorus has faced the devastating impact of the AIDS crisis, losing numerous members, yet it has continued to grow and adapt, embracing diversity and inclusion. The organization has expanded its mission beyond musical performances to include outreach programs like RHYTHM (Reaching Youth Through Music) and significant events such as the Lavender Pen Tour, promoting acceptance and equality across the U.S. SFGMC's commitment to social justice is reflected in its diverse repertoire and commissions of works like "I Am Harvey Milk" and "Unbreakable," celebrating LGBTQ+ heroes. The chorus has also made significant strides in representation, welcoming members across the spectrum of gender identity. With the acquisition of a permanent home, SFGMC is set to continue its legacy of activism, community engagement, and musical excellence. Under the leadership of individuals like Dr. Tim Seelig and his successor, Jake Stenberg, the chorus has not only commemorated its past but also looks forward to a future of continued advocacy and celebration of LGBTQ+ culture.
