The Duluth Superior Symphony Orchestra (DSSO), established in 1931, has a storied history deeply rooted in the community's cultural life. Originating in the carriage house of Alphin Flaaten, a professional music teacher, the orchestra held its first concert on May 2, 1932, under Walter Lange's direction. With overwhelming community support, Paul Lemay became the first full-time conductor, leading to the formation of the Duluth Symphony Association. Initially performing at the Duluth Armory, the orchestra moved to the DECC Auditorium in 1966, a venue seating over 2,200 located on the waterfront. Reflecting the close ties between Duluth and Superior, the orchestra's name was officially changed to the Duluth Superior Symphony Orchestra in the 1974-75 season. Now in its 91st season, the DSSO continues to deliver professional symphonic performances, featuring both traditional and contemporary works, to diverse audiences. Under the leadership of German conductor Dirk Meyer and concertmaster Erin Aldridge, the DSSO remains committed to enriching the community through the power of music, showcasing a blend of classical melodies and popular concerts.
