La Jolla, CA, United States

The UC San Diego Department of Theatre & Dance, established in the 1960s, has evolved into a prominent academic and creative institution. Initially envisioned by Michael Langham, former head of the Guthrie Theater, the department began offering a major in Drama in 1973 under the leadership of Arthur Wagner. It expanded to include Dance, led by Margaret Marshall, in 1995, renaming itself to Theatre and Dance. The department introduced innovative programs, including a ground-breaking joint PhD in theatre history/dramatic literature with UCI in 1998 and the TheatreForum journal in 1992, which celebrated innovative theatre artists globally until 2019. The department's connection with La Jolla Playhouse has facilitated MFAs and residencies, enriching its offerings. Philanthropy has played a significant role, with the Baldwin New Play Festival, later renamed the Wagner Festival, highlighting emerging stage talent. Today, UCSD's Department of Theatre & Dance is recognized among the top graduate theatre programs in the nation, offering a range of undergraduate and graduate degrees and hosting various productions each season.
