Music at Mannes, the summer intensive, provides young pianists and instrumental students the opportunity to enhance their skills and expand their musical interests. Each morning, students will engage in interactive music and movement classes. In our instrumental ensembles, participants will hone their ensemble skills through daily rehearsals, while our afternoon choral program encourages vocal development. This immersive two-week experience culminates with concluding performances in the recital halls of the Mannes College of Music.

Don't miss the finale of this year's Sandbox Percussion Summer Seminar, where participants collaborate with Sandbox Percussion for a memorable culminating concert. This performance will feature the chamber works that seminar participants have prepared throughout the seminar.

In this intensive experience, participants will learn, rehearse, and perform alongside Sandbox Percussion through daily rehearsals, coachings, and workshops. Participants will be divided into multiple chamber groups, each consisting of one member of Sandbox Percussion and 2-4 participants. These groups rehearse a concentrated selection of repertoire for several hours each day - vigorously studying and learning the music more deeply than ever before. Each chamber group presents their repertoire in a culminating marathon public performance on Tuesday, June 18th.

Kal Ferretti Senior Recital: Native New Yorker. Kal Ferretti is a 21 year old jazz trumpet player, composer, and educator who is currently making herself known as a serious young musician on the NYC jazz scene. Kal has led her own band for multi-night runs at Dizzy’s Club Coca Cola and Bern Jazz Festival and recently, her composition “The Next Path” was performed at Blue Note Jazz Club. She has made recent sideman appearances with the Mingus Dynasty, Jazz at Lincoln Center’s Future of Jazz Orchestra, Dave Glasser Quintet, the Grace Fox Big Band, having the opportunity to share the stage with musicians such as Dezron Douglas, Bruce Harris, Helen Sung, Adam Cruz, Abraham Burton, Dave Glasser, Tatum Greenblatt, and more.

With the longest opera at 15 minutes, and showcasing the talents of our incredible singers, Mannes Opera launches FLASHPOINTS this spring as an annual festival, celebrating short bites from a selection of stellar composers.

Flashpoints~the Mannes festival of short operas

Two female figures, created by Goethe, inspired some of the greatest songs in musical literature. The songs of Mignon, a mysterious, tragic figure who first appears in Wilhelm Meister, have been set to music by dozens of composers. Suleika, the female voice in Goethe’s West-Eastern Divan (anthology), has similarly been appropriated by many song writers, such as Beethoven, Reichardt, Schubert, Schumann, Wolf and Fanny Mendelssohn. In addition to songs of these composers, we will present new compositions by young composers of Mannes, inspired by these lyrics.

Written in 2014, HERE BE SIRENS is Kate Soper's first piece for the stage and is scored for three singers and a piano (without a conductor), much like her recent and widely acclaimed opera, The Hunt.  HERE BE SIRENS presents the daily life of three sirens, who kill time on their island as they await an endless procession of doomed sailors. Peitho revels in the luxurious sensuality of their rite; Phaino stonily enacts the ritual with no inner feeling; and Polyxo longs for escape into the world of the real, delving into centuries of scholarship and research on her species in an attempt to untwist their circumstances. As the opera goes on, the sirens re-enact the abduction of Persephone, encounter (and battle) their favored sisters the Muses, and leave no rock unturned to plumb the depths of their own origins, in this work of "audacious, genre-bending music theatre" (Wall Street Journal).

Aki’s Songs: A night of original music by Akihito Gorai

In this ensemble, significant Coltrane compositions are chosen as vehicles towards understanding why and how the music of John Coltrane, an icon of Jazz whose breadth of creation spans modern music from traditionalal to futuristic and beyond, pioneered concepts of harmonization. His innovative system was predicated on novel uses of the minor third fourth progression, which attributed to the expanded use of whole tone scales and the twelve-tone system, giving more flexibility to the improviser. Coltrane’s logical resolutions of extended chromatic passages, articulating densely notated compositions and tasteful note placement in slower compositions, have become defining factors in Jazz and improvisation. All of the above represent challenges unique to Coltrane compositions and an understanding of this great artist. Join us for this culminating concert!

Your body, your voice, your music, your humor and your fear. This is the DNA of an improvisational encounter and the departure point for the work of the Improvisational Artists Lab. This collaboration between Jazz, Drama & Mannes explores the outer reaches of how student performers from different disciplines interplay using the common language of improvisation and draw inspiration from personal narratives through weekly explorations of text, composition, soundscape and movement. Students are guided on a journey through spontaneous improvisation, dramatic text, music composition and intuitive play. By exploring diverse inter-art collaboration and improvisational process this collaboration provides students with new resources to meet contemporary performance challenges. Improvisational Artists Lab~Fall 2023 Jazz Ensemble Season

Approaching its 20th season in 2024, NOW Ensemble has developed close and continuous collaboration with dozens of composers, each of whom have taken distinctive approaches to NOW's unique instrumentation. In this session, NOW Ensemble will illuminate details of new music performance practice and moderate a discussion about creating and running ensembles that focus on building new directions in chamber music.

NOW Ensemble performs Missy Mazzoli and Gabriella Smith

This ensemble covers arrangements of mid-to-late 80’s Miles repertoire, including material from We Want Miles, You’re Under Arrest, Tutu, Amandala, and Live Around The World. The ensemble will use the music and format of Miles’ later bands as a framework for exploring fresh approaches to comping and soloing: modern rhythm section ideas, superimposing chords over static harmonies, polytonal street grooves, and more. Electric Miles Ensemble~Fall 2023 Jazz Ensemble Season

Students in this ensemble learn and perform repertoire from a variety of Indian music styles and genres, including popular music and the classical traditions of North India (Hindustani music) and South India (Karnatak music). Special attention is paid to the principles of raga and tala as well as improvisational techniques and approaches that have been of great interest to jazz musicians for decades.

Mannes Sounds Piano Cantabile: Something Borrowed

The student performers in this ensemble will showcase the art and practice of solo performance, from individual solo works to presentations of concert length programs, with a high degree of improvised material combined with careful preparation. Students have developed work based on thematic and structural elements, using both song form and open form improvisation, and have explored the ways these ideas can be combined. Players of single line instruments, vocalists, and percussion - as well as players of chordal instruments, which have the longest tradition of solo performance - are all welcome. Students recompose standards in a personal way to enhance a solo performance. The work of important solo improvisors like Cecil Taylor, Marilyn Crispell, Charmaine Lee, Evan Parker, Max Roach, Sylvie Courvoisier, Mary Halvorson, Anthony Braxton, Ikue Mori, and Thelonious Monk are mined for inspiration.
