Sandbox Percussion is thrilled to celebrate their Summer Seminar’s 10th year with a collaborative performance of Andy Akiho’s complete Seven Pillars. In this intensive experience, participants will learn, rehearse, and perform alongside Sandbox Percussion through daily rehearsals, coachings, and workshops. We are excited to invite Andy Akiho to join us for part of the week to coach Seven Pillars and offer masterclasses and discussions on his music and career as a composer. Participants will be divided into multiple chamber groups, each performing a different movement from Seven Pillars. Each group will consist of one member of Sandbox Percussion and 3 participants. These groups rehearse for several hours each day - vigorously studying and learning the music more deeply than ever before. We will present Seven Pillars in its entirety in a public performance on July 22.

"Whenever the topic of Great Albums of the 1970s crops up, certain titles invariably recur. There’s Fleetwood Mac’s Rumours, Stevie Wonder’s Innervisions, the Rolling Stones’ Exile on Main St., Miles Davis’ Bitches Brew, Pink Floyd’s The Wall, Michael Jackson’s Off the Wall. But while reading through the recent tributes to the great jazz composer and pianist Carla Bley, who died on Oct. 17, at age 87, I was reminded of the masterwork that’s always missing from those lists: Bley’s Escalator Over the Hill.

(Un)Silent Film presents Safety Last! - an American silent romantic-comedy film from 1923 starring Harold Lloyd, and produced by Hal Roach, and Kid Auto Races [at Venice], also known as The Pest, a 1914 American film starring Charlie Chaplin.



Come join us to see the iconic shot of Lloyd hanging from the clock (Safety Last!), and the pivotal moment in cinema where the camera breaks the fourth wall as Chaplin plays spectator at a "pushcar" race in Venice (Kid Auto Races)! Mannes' UnSilent orchestra brings these scores to life in live performances as the audience can marvel at both film and music in real-time. With extra attention being paid to phrase structure, articulation, and temporal coordination, the music leaps off the page in ecstatic delight as it meets the exuberance and humor of the film screen. The scores are exquisitely composed by Carl Davis, a dear long-time friend of The New School. Conducted by David Fulmer.


(Un)Silent Film: Safety Last! and Kid Auto Races

The India China Institute (ICI) was founded at The New School in 2004 to pursue new ways of thinking about the re-emergence of India and China on the world stage. Its mission was to study connections and flows between China, India and the United States in the context of a globalizing world that was transcending the bounded assumptions of “national interest” and geographies such as of “East Asia,” “South Asia” or “the West.” Twenty years later, optimism about globalization has been replaced by a disillusionment with liberal promises of mutual prosperity and progress arising from global flows of people, capital, and goods. The international economy is characterized by high tariffs, retaliatory sanctions, and regional trade groupings. States have securitized borders and mobilized grievances against domestic and geopolitical rivals, with raging wars and impending “Cold Wars,” exemplifying the collapse of shared global rules of engagement. Investments in public commons and multilateral institutions have been replaced by a discourse and practice of parochial protectionism.

Founded in 2012 by composer Lowell Liebermann, MACE represents works by iconic American composers such as Elliott Carter, Milton Babbitt, John Zorn, George Lewis, Augusta Read Thomas, Philip Glass, John Adams, and Steve Reich, as well as works by young, and up-and-coming composers.



Composer and conductor David Fulmer has been directing the Ensemble since 2016, and has presented a kaleidoscopic lens of different aesthetics and styles, while exploring diverse musical programs of established 20th and 21st century masterpieces, together with presentations of newly commissioned works and premieres.

Dr. Kara Yoo Leaman, Visiting Scholar at the Mannes School of Music, will present a lecture entitled "Fascinating Rhythms: Play Between Dance and Music in George Balanchine's Ballets" on Friday, April 11 from 4:00–5:30 PM in Stiefel Concerto Hall (55 W 13th St., Room 400).



Dr. Leaman is a distinguished scholar in the study of dance and music. Her research appears in numerous scholarly journals. For her work, Dr. Leaman received an Outstanding Publication Award from the Society for Music Theory and an NEH-Mellon Fellowship for Digital Publication, and was a fellow at The Center for Ballet and the Arts at New York University. Dr. Leaman is a former faculty member in music theory at Oberlin Conservatory.

Through his haunting and evocative score, Ofer Ben-Amots offers an operatic retelling of S. Ansky’s masterpiece of the Yiddish theatrical canon. Wracked with grief for her beloved, Leah, the daughter of a wealthy merchant, recounts her love of a young scholar who died on learning of her betrothal to another man. On the day of the wedding, she becomes possessed by an evil spirit, known in Jewish folklore as a dybbuk. In order to exorcise the spirit and save Leah’s soul, the village must learn the spirit’s true origin.

Curated by Donald Wagner, a member of The College of Performing Arts Board of Governors, this concert will explore the life and compositions of Alkan, the French pianist-composer friend and contemporary of Chopin and Liszt, who was justly celebrated in his lifetime. However, his fiercely difficult and starkly original compositions did not find consistent champions after his death in 1888, leading to his obscurity for generations- until a revival in the 1960s. We will hear excerpts from some of his most important works for piano- as well as chamber, vocal and pedal piano works- to demonstrate his wide ranging influences and his unique voice.

The Piano Cantabile Series is part of the Mannes Sounds Festival which was founded in 1999 by Pavlina Dokovska, chair of the Mannes Piano department. The festival presents more than 20 concerts annually performed by young artists from Mannes, the School of Jazz and Contemporary Music and the School of Drama as well as master classes and lectures by distinguished faculty members and renowned guest artists and is one of the outstanding components of Mannes' performance program. The events are held at various prestigious New York City concert venues and cultural institutions. 

Mannes Sounds Piano Cantabile: Poets in Music

Creative Lab/Studio is an opportunity for BFA Drama students to propose and produce self-directed projects with the resource support of the College of Performing Arts and the guidance of BFA Faculty.

 

The program provides a testing ground for students to put into practice the skills they are building in Drama classes. It is also a foundation for the creative life of the BFA community, creating a space for students to build relationships with collaborators (new and familiar) and to gather to see each other’s work.

Mannes Sounds Piano Cantabile: Point Counterpoint

A class of high school juniors are tasked with a simple Home Ec assignment: parent a sack of flour for a week or fail. When the flour babies begin dying one by one, the students stop at nothing to ensure that they, and the pretend children they bore, are the last ones standing. A play with war, carnage, and genocide, The Juniors is a pitch black comedy about the ambitious and cut-throat world of high school Home Economics and the lengths we'll go to in order to protect what we think is ours.

Mannes Sounds: A Tribute to Ravel for the 150th Anniversary of His Birth

The New School Studio Orchestra (NSSO) performs music from a wide variety of genres, including jazz, soul, pop, and improvised music. The NSSO kicked off its four-concert season on October 24 with an evening dedicated to the compositions and arrangements by the great jazz trombonist and composer Bob Brookmeyer. Ellington and Strayhorn’s beloved The Nutcracker Suite lit up the holiday season on December 5.

Professor Philip Stoecker, Hofstra University, will present "Adès's 'Paths': Rhythmic Cycles and Chaconnes in His Violin Concerto (2005)."



Prof. Stoecker is an expert on the music of the important British composer Thomas Adès (b. 1971) and co-edited the award-winning Thomas Adès Studies (Cambridge University Press). An expert on the music and compositional methods of other contemporary composers as well, his articles and other writings appear in numerous scholarly journals, and he has presented papers at national and international conferences. He is currently the President of the Music Theory Society of New York State

A member of jazz’s piano pantheon, Fred Hersch has been an influential creative force over more than three decades as an improviser, composer, educator, bandleader, collaborator, and recording artist. He has been proclaimed “the most arrestingly innovative pianist in jazz over the last decade” by Vanity Fair and “a living legend” by The New Yorker. A seventeen-time Grammy nominee, Hersch has garnered jazz’s most prestigious awards, including a Doris Duke Artist (2016), Jazz Pianist of the Year from the Jazz Journalists Association (2011, 2016, 2018), and the Jazz Magazine (France) International Artist of the Year (2021). The Fred Hersch Trio was voted the #1 Jazz Group in the 2019 DownBeat Critics Poll.

The School of Drama continues its dynamic partnership with Naked Angels, a leading figure in New York City’s theater community. The esteemed “1st Mondays at The New School” series is a vital platform for emerging playwrights from Naked Angels’ Tuesdays@9 community to showcase their work and for School of Drama students to interact with and learn from these emerging talents, gain insights into the process of creating and workshopping new plays, and forge meaningful connections within the industry. 

Witchcraft, transformation, love-sick fools, magic rings – all taking place on an island. Alcina (1773) is one of Handel’s three operas based on Ludovico Ariosto’s epic work, Orlando Furioso (1516).



The opera is a wild, messy story of love and deception – a fairy tale with magic that accurately describes the pain and exaltation of falling in love. Mannes Opera is thrilled to work with director Sam Helfrich, and to welcome back esteemed Mannes alumnus Geoffrey McDonald as conductor with the Mannes Opera Orchestra.

Celebrating Women in Jazz on International Women's Day! The School of Jazz and Contemporary Music at The New School's College of Performing Arts partners with the Women in Jazz Organization in honor of International Women's Day to host a jazz jam celebrating Women in Jazz, past and present.

 

The first set will feature a spectacular house band featuring Carmen Staaf on piano, Hannah Marks on bass, and Shirazette Tinnin on drums. They have recently performed together alongside Dee Dee Bridgewater as a trio. They will perform originals and tunes by other women in jazz, such as Mary Lou Williams, Geri Allen, and Jane Ira Bloom.

Fred Hersch Masterclass: Accompanying for Vocalists

The student performers in this ensemble will showcase the art and practice of solo performance, from individual solo works to presentations of concert length programs, with a high degree of improvised material combined with careful preparation. Students have developed work based on thematic and structural elements, using both song form and open form improvisation, and have explored the ways these ideas can be combined. Players of single line instruments, vocalists, and percussion - as well as players of chordal instruments, which have the longest tradition of solo performance - are all welcome. Students recompose standards in a personal way to enhance a solo performance. The work of important solo improvisors like Cecil Taylor, Marilyn Crispell, Charmaine Lee, Evan Parker, Max Roach, Sylvie Courvoisier, Mary Halvorson, Anthony Braxton, Ikue Mori, and Thelonious Monk are mined for inspiration. Mannes Sounds Piano Cantabile: Something Borrowed

Students in this ensemble learn and perform repertoire from a variety of Indian music styles and genres, including popular music and the classical traditions of North India (Hindustani music) and South India (Karnatak music). Special attention is paid to the principles of raga and tala as well as improvisational techniques and approaches that have been of great interest to jazz musicians for decades.

In his Communal Ancestral Listening Sessions, Michael creates a sense of community and connection by playing recordings of musical forebears who propelled the advancement of the human condition - prompting listeners to voluntarily share what they feel and hear. For this special event, we invite you to connect through the healing, love, and uplift that’s embedded in Black roots music. You will be invited to explore how Black roots music embodies the Black experience – holding the spirit and memory of a people who weave together traditions of the African diaspora. Music at Mannes, the summer intensive, provides young pianists and instrumental students the opportunity to enhance their skills and expand their musical interests. Each morning, students will engage in interactive music and movement classes. In our instrumental ensembles, participants will hone their ensemble skills through daily rehearsals, while our afternoon choral program encourages vocal development. This immersive two-week experience culminates with concluding performances in the recital halls of the Mannes College of Music.

We are delighted to present a recital by Martín García García as part of the Mannes Summer Piano Festival. The program showcases the masterpieces of Chopin, alongside captivating compositions by Mompou, Albéniz, and García García himself.

This exciting program will welcome students from around the world to study with esteemed international guest faculty from Europe and Asia and members of the celebrated Mannes piano faculty. The program includes private lessons, seminars and workshops, master classes, performance opportunities, a concert series, and a piano competition.  Students have the option of attending for one or two weeks. One-week enrollment is available July 15 - 20 OR July 22 - 27, and two-week enrollment is from July 15 - 27.

Yekwon Sunwoo has been hailed for his “unfailingly consistent excellence” (International Piano) and celebrated as “a pianist who commands a comprehensive technical arsenal that allows him to thunder without breaking a sweat” (Chicago Tribune). A powerful and virtuosic performer, he also, in his own words, “strives to reach for the truth and pure beauty in music”.

This celebration of Dolphy’s genius brings together more than 30 brilliant artists to re-imagine his music and wonder aloud what might have been. Unheard Dolphy. New works created from his unfinished scores. Explorations of his previously unknown jam sessions with Cecil Taylor. Geri Allen's epic "Celebration Suite for Eric Dolphy"- performed only once, 35 years ago. School of Jazz and Contemporary Music at The New School College of Performing Arts ensemble performing unrecorded Dolphy and backing legendary dancer Dianne McIntyre. A stellar slate beginning to end, with a symposium and a listening session led by the great flutist, composer and Dolphy scholar Dr. James Newton.

Eric Dolphy: Freedom of Sound

Don't miss the finale of this year's Sandbox Percussion Summer Seminar, where participants collaborate with Sandbox Percussion for a memorable culminating concert. This performance will feature the chamber works that seminar participants have prepared throughout the seminar.

Sandbox Percussion Seminar Closing Concert

In this intensive experience, participants will learn, rehearse, and perform alongside Sandbox Percussion through daily rehearsals, coachings, and workshops. Participants will be divided into multiple chamber groups, each consisting of one member of Sandbox Percussion and 2-4 participants. These groups rehearse a concentrated selection of repertoire for several hours each day - vigorously studying and learning the music more deeply than ever before. Each chamber group presents their repertoire in a culminating marathon public performance on Tuesday, June 18th. 

This concert marks the start of the Sandbox Percussion Summer Seminar, where participants learn, rehearse, and perform alongside Sandbox Percussion through daily rehearsals, coachings, and workshops. We hope you'll also join us on Tuesday, June 18 for a special concert performed by seminar participants alongside Sandbox Percussion.
