Fort Wayne Youtheatre

Fort Wayne, IN, United States

Founded in 1934 by Dr. Clive McAllister, the Fort Wayne Youtheatre originated as a junior branch of the Old Fort Players, now known as the Civic Theatre. It was established with the goal of developing children's poise, diction, and self-esteem through dramatic instruction, committing to at least one annual play to foster a love for art and integrity in dramatic literature. Starting with 40 students, its first production was "The Steadfast Tin Soldier" at the Majestic Theatre in Fort Wayne. After various relocations due to safety concerns, it was renamed the Fort Wayne Youtheatre in 1954 and eventually found its permanent home in the Arts United Center in 1973. Becoming autonomous in 1984, the Youtheatre has been under the leadership of notable figures such as Broadway star Harvey Cocks and, more recently, Todd Espeland since 2018. As the fifth oldest active children’s theatre in the nation, it has produced numerous classes, camps, and theatrical productions for over 75 years, including a touring troupe and the award-winning Linda L. Ruffalo Young Heroes of Conscience Series. The Youtheatre continues to dedicate itself to educating, engaging, and entertaining the northeast Indiana community through quality theatrical experiences.
