Douglas County Youth Orchestra (DCYO) was founded in 1997 by Roseburg music teacher Jean Hinkle with five students. Over two decades later, the program has expanded significantly, offering comprehensive music education, including free private lessons for students. DCYO comprises three string orchestras: Prelude for young beginners (ages 8-11), Concert for older beginners or those with prior experience (ages 9-13), and Philharmonic for advanced students (ages 12-20). The orchestras perform at annual concerts and community events. The Private Lesson Enrichment Program, established in 2019, provides no-cost private lessons to all registered students under 21. DCYO enrolls 60-70 students who learn a diverse repertoire from classical to contemporary music. Supported by the Umpqua Symphony Association, private donors, and foundations, DCYO also offers scholarships to ensure accessibility. The organization has a longstanding relationship with the Eugene Symphony Orchestra, enhancing students' learning experiences through workshops and performances.
