The English Symphony Orchestra (ESO) was founded in 1976 by William Boughton and former members of the Midlands Radio Orchestra as the Vivaldi Chamber Orchestra. It initially focused on English music, earning an international reputation and making over fifty recordings. The ensemble evolved from the English String Orchestra to the English Symphony Orchestra, expanding its repertoire to encompass a wide range of orchestral music. The ESO has collaborated with notable musicians such as Nigel Kennedy, Steven Isserlis, and Yehudi Menuhin, who served as Principal Guest Conductor from 1991 to 2000. Vernon Handley became the second Principal Conductor in 2007, leading the orchestra until his death in 2008. Kenneth Woods has been the Principal Conductor since 2013. Based in Elgar’s home town, the ESO has made acclaimed recordings of his works and those of other major 20th-century British composers. The orchestra has also been committed to contemporary music, commissioning and premiering new works through initiatives like the 21st Century Symphony Project. The ESO continues to present innovative programming, engage in international tours, and collaborate with leading soloists, solidifying its status as a major force in British musical life.
