Nottingham Symphony Orchestra

Nottingham, United Kingdom

Nottingham Symphony Orchestra, originally founded as the Midland Conservatory of Music Orchestra in 1933 by Nottingham composer Walter Thomas Gaze Cooper, adopted its current name in 1942. The amateur orchestra plays a significant role in the classical music scene of Nottingham, rehearsing weekly and performing four concerts annually. Under the leadership of Musical Director Derek Williams, now in his fortieth season, and leader Tim Boswell, the orchestra has been recognized as one of Britain's premier amateur orchestras. The NSO's repertoire includes a wide range of classical music, featuring local artists, BBC Young Musician of the Year winners, and internationally renowned soloists. Notable performances include playing for HM The Queen during Nottingham's Golden Jubilee celebrations in 2002 and collaborating with the Nottingham Festival Opera and Opera Babes at the Royal Concert Hall in 2004. The orchestra continues to attract distinguished soloists and maintains a vibrant presence in Nottingham's cultural life. The NSO is a registered charity and a company limited by guarantee.
