Kensington Symphony Orchestra (KSO), established in 1956, is renowned as one of the UK’s premier non-professional orchestras. Founded by Leslie Head and currently led by Russell Keable since 1983, KSO has built a distinctive repertoire that includes established classics, neglected masterpieces, and contemporary works. The orchestra is noted for its adventurous programming, featuring world and British premières by composers such as Bax, Bruckner, and Sibelius, as well as modern composers like Thomas Ades and Jonny Greenwood. KSO has a strong tradition of charitable activities, beginning with its first concert for the Hungarian Relief Fund. It has supported various causes, including War Child and the Grenfell Tower Fund, and has developed educational links with the Kampala Symphony Orchestra. The orchestra regularly collaborates with distinguished soloists and guest conductors, performing at prestigious venues like Queen Elizabeth Hall and the Barbican Centre. Celebrating its 60th anniversary in 2017, KSO continues to maintain high performance standards and a commitment to innovative programming.
