Celebrate the Season with Musical Masterpieces in Basingstoke, NYC, and More

Whilst coming from very different eras, William Byrd and Arvo Pärt are both considered masters of sacred music despite having faced considerable persecution for their work. This programme presents six of William Byrd’s works from the Cantiones Sacrae including the monumental Tribue, Domine, and the mighty eight-voice motet Ad Dominum cum tribularer. The three works by Arvo Pärt speak in his unmistakable voice, with its unique blend of ancient and modern, and include his mesmerising Nunc dimittis which is crafted in his bell-like ‘tinitinnabuli’ style.

Genesis Sixteen, now in its 13th year, remains a unique and pioneering training programme for the next generation of talented ensemble singers. In addition to high quality vocal training from conductor Harry Christophers and associate conductor Eamonn Dougan, and individual mentoring and one-per-part consort training with members of The Sixteen, participants also receive specialist training in vocal anatomy, nutrition for singers, business and performance skills from some of the industry’s top experts.

At its heart, London Youth Choirs (LYC) is a family of 10 choirs for young people from school year 3 to age 23. Since their foundation in 2012 their citywide vision has always promised two things: musical excellence and social change. They work constantly to remove barriers to access to ensure that everyone can take part. In addition to rehearsals and performances, LYC runs regular workshops in schools in order to bring singing to as many young people as possible.

Come and be wowed by some of London’s most vibrant youth choirs as primary school children from across the Capital join together in an afternoon of song. Featuring individual performances from choirs including London Youth Choir Junior Boys, Finchley Children’s Intermediate Choir, Wievenhoe Youth Choir and Blackheath Junior Choir, this collection of tomorrow’s voices will culminate in a joint performance of Sarah Quartel’s The Beat of a Different Drum. Composed in a staggering twenty-four days Messiah was first performed in Dublin in 1742 where it received a rapturous welcome. Not so the following year when it premiered in London to a distinctly hostile reception. It wasn’t until Messiah began to be presented in charity performances at the Foundling Hospital in London that the public started to embrace the work we now regard as Handel’s greatest composition.
