Three composers cry out in the void. Confronted by unimaginable horror, Schoenberg rediscovered his Jewish roots, and created a musical drama of savage, defiant courage, in tribute to the Holocaust victims. In Soviet Russia, the authorities expected Shostakovich to write a propaganda symphony: but what they got was a searing denunciation of man’s inhumanity to man – more potent, and more urgent than ever in 2024. As part of our exploration of memory, Andrey Boreyko conducts three testaments from a dark century – with the incomparable Gidon Kremer as soloist in the Violin Concerto by Mieczysław Weinberg: composer, survivor and Shostakovich’s most devoted friend.

Marking the centenary of the composer’s death, Ferruccio Busoni’s gargantuan Piano Concerto is perhaps better described as a symphony in five movements, capped by a male chorus. Woven through Busoni’s bizarrely wonderful and utterly engrossing score is one of the most challenging piano parts ever committed to paper – tackled tonight by British star pianist Benjamin Grosvenor. Before it, Edward Gardner and his London Philharmonic forces whet the appetite with the snap, crackle and pop of Rachmaninov’s riveting Symphonic Dances.

What price heaven? The Peri has been cast out of Paradise. Now she walks the Earth, a wounded but gentle spirit, seeking the good deed or the loving heart that will guide her back to happiness. Robert Schumann was a musical dreamer with the soul of a poet, and in 1843 he retold her adventures in some of the most heartfelt music of the Romantic age. Weird, wild and utterly wonderful, it’s a labour of true love for Edward Gardner, and for this rare performance he’s gathered an all-star cast as well as the full London Philharmonic Choir.
