RiverCenter for the Performing Art

RiverCenter for the Performing Arts, located in historic uptown Columbus, Georgia, serves as the cultural hub of the city's arts and entertainment district. Designed by Hardy Holzman Pfeiffer and Associates, the center was constructed with funds from the Columbus Challenge, a public-private fundraising effort, and contributions from the Georgia state government and the Bradley-Turner Foundation. The 245,000-square-foot facility blends historic architectural elements with modern design, featuring a striking glass and steel façade. The centerpiece of RiverCenter is the 2,000-seat Bill Heard Theatre, home to the Columbus Symphony Orchestra and designed to accommodate a diverse array of performances, including Broadway shows, concerts, and lectures. Opened in April 2002, the theatre has hosted renowned artists like Yo-Yo Ma, Itzhak Perlman, and Bill Cosby, as well as international ensembles and Broadway productions. Legacy Hall, the second-largest venue with 430 seats, is noted for its exceptional acoustics and the Jordan Concert Organ. It, along with the 150-seat Studio Theatre, also serves the Columbus State University Schwob School of Music. RiverCenter supports local arts organizations, including the Columbus Symphony Orchestra and the Columbus Ballet, and offers educational outreach through its ArtReach program. Operating as a non-profit, RiverCenter provides essential services to its resident organizations and plays a vital role in the cultural and civic life of the region.
