We invite students, adult learners, and professionals alike to hang together and perform in a welcoming, encouraging environment. There will be a signup list posted for each jam online along with “Community Tunes” for everyone to check out. With local professional rhythm section players ready to lay it down, we invite all Charleston area musicians to come and share in this great tradition of the music. Many deserving students, when faced with the challenging format of the audition process, underperform when they know they could do much better. Our audition experts will help prepare all students by providing strategies for audition success!

The Listening Shed is an opportunity to shine a light on the most important aspect of understanding jazz: listening! It will be a chance for students and jazz lovers alike to experience how jazz professionals listen to and gain insights from music. Every Thursday in November (aside from Thanksgiving), we will have a professional from the community present records that have been impactful in their learning of this music. The musicians will highlight subtleties that may be easily missed, foundational elements of jazz, and specific aspects that each particular musician appreciates in this informal, fun gathering of musicians and enthusiasts. The “shed” is important for musicians—it’s where we work out our ideas and find our voice in this continuum. With the Listening Shed, we hope to bring that same significance to everyone’s first experience with this music!

Pedro Pablo “Pedrito” Martinez was born in Havana, Cuba, on September 12, 1973, in the Cayo Hueso neighborhood of Old Havana, and began his musical career at the age of 11. Since settling in New York City in the fall of 1998, Pedrito has recorded and/or performed with Wynton Marsalis, Paul Simon, Paquito D’Rivera, Chucho Valdés, Bruce Springsteen, Eddie Palmieri, Dave Matthews, Jackson Browne, Elton John, James Taylor, and Sting, and has contributed to well over 100 albums. A consummate master of Afro-Cuban folkloric music and the batá drum he is also the world’s first-call rumbero—playing, singing, and dancing with dozens of Cuban rumba groups and contributing to, or appearing in, several important films, including Calle 54 (2000) and Chico and Rita (2010).

To kick off the 2024 Charleston Jazz Festival, jazz clarinetist Pete Neighbour presents his unique Swing-Era Jazz for the 21st Century! Originally from London, England, Pete now calls Charleston home and has traveled extensively, performing at New York’s Lincoln Center, the Royal Festival Hall in London, the Cannes Film Festival, and various venues in New Orleans, Paris, Singapore, and Sidney. Pete’s early playing years were heavily influenced by the ‘Swing Era’ of the 1930s and 40s, especially that of Benny Goodman, whom he still holds in great esteem. Today, Pete’s style still encompasses that of Benny and his contemporaries but is much enhanced by other clarinet greats such as Buddy de Franco, Tony Scott, and Eddie Daniels.

Mike Quinn and The Parade Band bring the Second Line tradition of New Orleans into the context of the Lowcountry, blending swing jazz, funk, soul, and pop into a rowdy, funk-driven 5-headed beast. Sax man Quinn heads up this ensemble of cross-bending monsters, including Gavin Smith on trombone, Dave Grimm on guitar, Ron Wiltrout on drums, and Chris Bluemel on helicon (a type of sousaphone). This cast of local superheroes is sure to play your socks off and wildly entertain.

The Southern Pines features two-time Grammy Award-winning vocalist Quiana Parler from Ranky Tanky and some of the Southeast’s finest jazz musicians! This female-driven band was formed with inspiration from South Carolina life and the exhibit Our Own Work, Our Own Way: Ascendant Women Artists from the Johnson Collection at the Columbia Museum of Art. All of their music is written by bandleader Colleen Clark, who has a deep understanding of swing, New Orleans street beats, and blues. Colleen is an assistant professor of jazz at the University of South Carolina, where she coordinates small ensembles, conducts a big band, and teaches drum set studio and jazz history courses. She is the first and only drummer to earn a Doctor of Musical Arts from the world-renowned University of North Texas.

Join us for a special workshop with professional pianist and vocalist Manny Houston. Houston will talk about what it takes to “own” the stage, and share valuable style and performance techniques. Students will learn how to collaborate with their fellow musicians and work together as a team.

Through the Jammin Journeys program, youth and families are invited to join us as we explore musical selections, instruments, and techniques from across the Global African Diaspora. A 90-minute experience including a performance and workshop, the program educates participants on diverse music styles and genres while also providing a space for music exploration, listening, and fun! In partnership with the International African American Museum, we invite youth and families to join us on February 10 for Jammin Journeys Feat. Quiana Parler, a performance and workshop centered on the Gullah Geechee connection to Charleston and the Sea Islands and their intersection with the roots of jazz.

The Charleston Jazz Gala is a highly anticipated annual event celebrating the spirit of jazz that raises funds to advance this musical art form in Charleston. Prestigious Blue Note recording artist and Grammy-nominated musician Melissa Aldana is a Chilean-born tenor saxophonist who is making big waves in the jazz scene. At the age of 24, Aldana became the first female instrumentalist and the first South American musician to win the Thelonious Monk International Jazz Saxophone Competition.  This marks her first collaboration with the world-renown Charleston Jazz Orchestra as she delves into the greatest hits of her saxophone heroes through the generations, including John Coltrane, Benny Golson, Wayne Shorter and Joe Henderson.

Benjamin’s mother loved music, so much so that she went to a little festival called Woodstock back in 1969 (that’s a story for another day)!  To celebrate her legacy, Uptown Social is teaming up with David Higgins Band and Tim Davis who will host on this family jam under the stars. Several of the regions finest musicians will take the stage to raise money for the Charleston Jazz Academy. Manny Houston is a multi-talented musician, performer, and songwriter with a passion for creating unforgettable musical experiences. Raised in South Carolina, Manny began his musical journey playing piano in his father’s church, later earning a degree in classical piano from the College of Charleston. Manny has starred in off-Broadway shows, performed in residency in Las Vegas with Freestyle Love Supreme (with Lin Manuel and Wayne Brady), and also worked as a songwriter under the mentorship of Stargate, NeYo and other industry heavyweights. Art of Jazz: Manny Houston

Jazz Combo Camp is a 5-day camp for students in grades 7-12  interested in learning improvisational skills by playing in a jazz combo with similarly skilled peers. The workshop consists of daily two-hour combo sessions, basic jazz theory classes, and one evening concert. Additionally, each student receives one additional 45-minute private or small-group (sectional) instructional session focused on her/his instrument.

Abdullah Ibrahim, South Africa’s most distinguished pianist, was born in Cape Town. The young “Dollar Brand,” as he became known early on, was exposed to American jazz, township jive, Cape Malay music, and classical music. Out of this blend of the secular and the religious, the traditional and the modern, he developed his distinctive style and musical vocabulary. In 1963, Duke Ellington heard his band play, which led to a recording session in Paris: Duke Ellington presents the Dollar Brand Trio. Ibrahim’s music was inseparable from the anti-apartheid movement in his native country; his 1974 recording, “Mannenberg –‘Is where it’s happening’” was an unofficial national anthem for Black South Africans. At 88, he is a National Endowment for the Arts Jazz Master and among the great statesmen of culture. His groundbreaking ensemble is named Ekaya, the Zulu word for “Homeland.”

This beloved tradition opens with the National Anthem, performed in 2023 by Nicole Heaston, who appears in the title role of Vanessa. The Charleston Jazz Academy is pleased to host JAZZ GIRLS DAY in partnership with the University of South Carolina School of Music Jazz program.  An annual initiative that invites and inspires girls from South Carolina to join the USC Jazz faculty for a day filled with learning, playing, and performing. The idea behind JAZZ GIRLS DAY is not only to welcome girls to start or continue playing jazz but also encourage South Carolina music educators to encourage girls to play jazz.

GRAMMY-winning artist Dianne Reeves has been named a “Jazz Master” by the National Endowment for the Arts – the highest honor for a jazz artist in the United States.   Reeves also holds an honorary Doctor of Fine Arts from Juilliard for her “breathtaking virtuosity, improvisational prowess, and unique jazz and R&B style.”  Historian and music critic Scott Yanow describes Reeves as “a logical successor to Dinah Washington and Carmen McRae, Reeves is a superior interpreter of lyrics and a skilled scat singer.”

“Some drummers act, some react. Some keep time, others create it. Cindy Blackman Santana is among the few who can,” says Mike Zwerin of the International Herald Tribune.  Blackman started her career as a busker on the streets of New York City and has gone on to travel the world.  Her high-energy performances are mesmerizing and she is a master both in jazz and rock as the drummer for husband Carlos Santana, the Latin jazz and rock superstar.

With a mission to revitalize jazz and swing music, this powerhouse ensemble has sold-out prestigious venues such as the Hollywood Bowl and Lincoln Center.
