Pedro Pablo “Pedrito” Martinez was born in Havana, Cuba, on September 12, 1973, in the Cayo Hueso neighborhood of Old Havana, and began his musical career at the age of 11. Since settling in New York City in the fall of 1998, Pedrito has recorded and/or performed with Wynton Marsalis, Paul Simon, Paquito D’Rivera, Chucho Valdés, Bruce Springsteen, Eddie Palmieri, Dave Matthews, Jackson Browne, Elton John, James Taylor, and Sting, and has contributed to well over 100 albums. A consummate master of Afro-Cuban folkloric music and the batá drum he is also the world’s first-call rumbero—playing, singing, and dancing with dozens of Cuban rumba groups and contributing to, or appearing in, several important films, including Calle 54 (2000) and Chico and Rita (2010).

Michel Calvet is the official artist for the 2024 CHARLESTON JAZZ FESTIVAL (April 18-21). This collaboration is particularly special as Calvet began his career as a jazz musician, and his love for jazz is reflected in several of his works. Over a span of two decades, 11 recordings, and countless festival and concert stage performances, René inspires people with her artistry, her life story, and her ability to affirm the power of the human spirit.

To kick off the 2024 Charleston Jazz Festival, jazz clarinetist Pete Neighbour presents his unique Swing-Era Jazz for the 21st Century! Originally from London, England, Pete now calls Charleston home and has traveled extensively, performing at New York’s Lincoln Center, the Royal Festival Hall in London, the Cannes Film Festival, and various venues in New Orleans, Paris, Singapore, and Sidney. Pete’s early playing years were heavily influenced by the ‘Swing Era’ of the 1930s and 40s, especially that of Benny Goodman, whom he still holds in great esteem. Today, Pete’s style still encompasses that of Benny and his contemporaries but is much enhanced by other clarinet greats such as Buddy de Franco, Tony Scott, and Eddie Daniels.

Mike Quinn and The Parade Band bring the Second Line tradition of New Orleans into the context of the Lowcountry, blending swing jazz, funk, soul, and pop into a rowdy, funk-driven 5-headed beast. Sax man Quinn heads up this ensemble of cross-bending monsters, including Gavin Smith on trombone, Dave Grimm on guitar, Ron Wiltrout on drums, and Chris Bluemel on helicon (a type of sousaphone). This cast of local superheroes is sure to play your socks off and wildly entertain.

The Southern Pines features two-time Grammy Award-winning vocalist Quiana Parler from Ranky Tanky and some of the Southeast’s finest jazz musicians! This female-driven band was formed with inspiration from South Carolina life and the exhibit Our Own Work, Our Own Way: Ascendant Women Artists from the Johnson Collection at the Columbia Museum of Art. All of their music is written by bandleader Colleen Clark, who has a deep understanding of swing, New Orleans street beats, and blues. Colleen is an assistant professor of jazz at the University of South Carolina, where she coordinates small ensembles, conducts a big band, and teaches drum set studio and jazz history courses. She is the first and only drummer to earn a Doctor of Musical Arts from the world-renowned University of North Texas.

In partnership with the International African American Museum, we invite youth and families to join us on February 10 for Jammin Journeys Feat. Quiana Parler, a performance and workshop centered on the Gullah Geechee connection to Charleston and the Sea Islands and their intersection with the roots of jazz.

Benjamin’s mother loved music, so much so that she went to a little festival called Woodstock back in 1969 (that’s a story for another day)! Jazz Combo Camp is a 5-day camp for students in grades 7-12  interested in learning improvisational skills by playing in a jazz combo with similarly skilled peers. The workshop consists of daily two-hour combo sessions, basic jazz theory classes, and one evening concert. Additionally, each student receives one additional 45-minute private or small-group (sectional) instructional session focused on her/his instrument.

Abdullah Ibrahim, South Africa’s most distinguished pianist, was born in Cape Town. The young “Dollar Brand,” as he became known early on, was exposed to American jazz, township jive, Cape Malay music, and classical music. Out of this blend of the secular and the religious, the traditional and the modern, he developed his distinctive style and musical vocabulary. In 1963, Duke Ellington heard his band play, which led to a recording session in Paris: Duke Ellington presents the Dollar Brand Trio. Ibrahim’s music was inseparable from the anti-apartheid movement in his native country; his 1974 recording, “Mannenberg –‘Is where it’s happening’” was an unofficial national anthem for Black South Africans. At 88, he is a National Endowment for the Arts Jazz Master and among the great statesmen of culture. His groundbreaking ensemble is named Ekaya, the Zulu word for “Homeland.”

Influenced by West African culture and European classical music, an adventurous new style of music emerged in America at the dawn of the 20th century. Jazz quickly found its way beyond the borders of New Orleans, emanating its sound and message around the world. This event serves as a closing celebration for the North Charleston Arts Fest’s many visual art competitions and exhibitions. In addition to admiring the vast array of artwork on display, patrons can enjoy a live painting demo by local artist Jirah Perkins, along with musical entertainment by students from Charleston Jazz Academy.

The Charleston Jazz Academy is pleased to host JAZZ GIRLS DAY in partnership with the University of South Carolina School of Music Jazz program.  An annual initiative that invites and inspires girls from South Carolina to join the USC Jazz faculty for a day filled with learning, playing, and performing. The idea behind JAZZ GIRLS DAY is not only to welcome girls to start or continue playing jazz but also encourage South Carolina music educators to encourage girls to play jazz.

“Some drummers act, some react. Some keep time, others create it. Cindy Blackman Santana is among the few who can,” says Mike Zwerin of the International Herald Tribune.  Blackman started her career as a busker on the streets of New York City and has gone on to travel the world.  Her high-energy performances are mesmerizing and she is a master both in jazz and rock as the drummer for husband Carlos Santana, the Latin jazz and rock superstar.

GRAMMY-winning artist Dianne Reeves has been named a “Jazz Master” by the National Endowment for the Arts – the highest honor for a jazz artist in the United States.   Reeves also holds an honorary Doctor of Fine Arts from Juilliard for her “breathtaking virtuosity, improvisational prowess, and unique jazz and R&B style.”  Historian and music critic Scott Yanow describes Reeves as “a logical successor to Dinah Washington and Carmen McRae, Reeves is a superior interpreter of lyrics and a skilled scat singer.”

With a mission to revitalize jazz and swing music, this powerhouse ensemble has sold-out prestigious venues such as the Hollywood Bowl and Lincoln Center.  They have toured the world selling millions of records and have their music featured in hundreds of film and television shows.  They have appeared on Dancing with the Stars and Super Bowl XXXIII and are one of the driving forces that has kept swing and jazz in the limelight for nearly three decades.

The New York Times describes Samara Joy as a “silky-voiced rising jazz star” and the Boston Globe compliments her “warm, capacious vocal instrument and breathtaking technique.” The 22-year old burst onto the world stage when her TikTok videos of soulful standards went viral landing her on the TODAY Show. She is newly signed to the prestigious Verve records label and has been awarded 2023 GRAMMY Awards for Best New Artist and Best Vocal Jazz Album. She brings a fresh, youthful energy to timeless jazz classics and is no doubt on her way to being the great legend of this generation.

Stachia ‘StaLaV’ Simmons is an artist and multi-instrumentalist from Goose Creek, SC. Born into a musical family, she began playing drums in church at the age of 2 and has been playing ever since. A powerhouse vocalist/instrumentalist, producer, and harmonic arranger, StaLaV has performed with several notables in the gospel industry and other Lowcountry favorites, such as Quiana Parler, Charlton Singleton, and national jazz saxophonist Paul Shiltz. Her audiences can expect a night of creative expression…from Soul to Jazz, Gospel, Funk and Reggae. One thing is for sure, StaLaV and The Tribe will leave you uplifted and inspired during their performance the 2023 Charleston Jazz Festival!

Matt White’s Dolly is a reimagining of the early music of Dolly Parton, combining her incredible song writing and lyrics with contemporary musical styles and improvisation. Currently the Chair of Jazz Studies at the University of South Carolina, Matt was drawn to Dolly’s early career and imagined how her music, often tackling themes of poverty and gender equality, could be reconstructed by connecting southern roots music with contemporary styles and production. Oscar Rivers, Charleston’s Jazz Patriarch, made a name for himself in 1970’s Chicago, playing with everyone from Charlie Parker, Sonny Stitt, Stevie Wonder, BB King, the Temptations, and the Quincy Jones Orchestra. Oscar is featured in An Encyclopedia of South Carolina Jazz and Blues Musicians, which documents South Carolinian musicians from the 19th century to the present. Truly a Lowcountry legend, Oscar and his band perform all jazz styles, with a focus on Standards, Latin and Jazz-Soul crossover.
