José Hernández's inspring life story takes him on a journey from a migrant farmworker to a NASA astronaut. Hernández wanted to fly in space ever since he heard that the first Hispanic-American had been chosen to travel into space. "I was hoeing a row of sugar beets in a field near Stockton, Calif., and I heard on my transistor radio that Franklin Chang-Diaz had been selected for the Astronaut Corps," says Hernández, who was a senior in high school at the time. "I was already interested in science and engineering," Hernández remembers, "but that was the moment I said, 'I want to fly in space.' And that's something I've been striving for each day since then." And now that hard work has paid off. He was selected to begin training as a mission specialist as part of the 2004 astronaut candidate class

This 16-foot box truck transforms into the ultimate mobile concert hall, inviting audiences to experience firsthand how music can bring communities together in extraordinary ways. Founded in 2016 by concert pianists Susan Zhang and Nick Luby, The Concert Truck brings classical chamber music directly to communities. They have toured across the country, presenting concerts in city streets, music and arts festivals, schools, neighborhoods, parks... anywhere you can think to park a truck. Inspire School of Arts & Sciences presents The Lightning Thief: The Percy Jackson Musical, a story about identity, family, and community. Based on the beloved novel by Rick Riordan, The Lightning Thief tells the story of teenager Percy Jackson, son of Greek god Poseidon, as he sets out on a hero’s journey of self-discovery, grappling with monsters and mysterious mayhem along the way to find Zeus’ missing lightning bolt, and prevent war among the gods. Percy’s experience is one that resonates across cultures and our casting reflects that truth. Performers ranging in age from 10-18 reflecting the youth of our local community. Roles have been cast openly to include different shapes, abilities, ethnicities, and identities. As the playwright, Joe Tracz, says, “The characters in The Lightning Thief are gods and heroes – and gods and heroes can look like any of us.”

Spencer and his wife, Cindy, toured the world for more than 25 years, with one of the largest and most successful theatrical illusion productions in the U.S. They left behind a trail of accolades in their wake including 2009 International Illusionists of the Year and six-time recipients of Performing Arts Entertainer of the Year. They are also the recipients of the magic industry’s most prestigious award given by The Milbourne Christopher Foundation – the 2015 International Illusionists of the Year for notable contributions to the art of magic. At the pinnacle of their career, Kevin stepped away from the big stage and into classrooms and hospitals around the globe. He is the leading international authority on the academic and therapeutic benefits of simple magic tricks in educational and clinical settings. His work focuses on using the art of magic to impact change in the lives of people with autism, developmental disabilities, intellectual challenges, emotional disturbance, and those who have histories of trauma. As both an academic and an artist, Dr. Spencer offers sensory inclusive performances to reach underserved communities and speaks at conferences and universities around the world on the active and passive benefits of magic tricks in educational and therapeutic settings.

Grammy Award winning duo Rodrigo y Gabriela grew up on an eclectic mix of classic rock, heavy metal and flamenco, a rare alchemy of influences that still informs their work today. Not long after the dissolution of their first band, the two musicians set off with their acoustic guitars and ended up in Ireland, where they soon ran out of money and began busking on Dublin’s Grafton Street — a turn of events that led to their crossing paths with Irish singer/songwriter Damien Rice, who then asked them to open for him at an early headline show. In a cultural landscape filled with endless pundits and talking heads, Fran Lebowitz stands out as one of our most insightful social commentators. Her essays and interviews offer her acerbic views on current events and the media – as well as pet peeves including tourists, baggage-claim areas, after- shave lotion, adults who roller skate, children who speak French, or anyone who is unduly tan. The New York Times Book Review calls Lebowitz an "important humorist in the classic tradition." Purveyor of urban cool, Lebowitz is a cultural satirist whom many call the heir to Dorothy Parker. “Success didn't spoil me, I've always been insufferable.” This is Lebowitz off the cuff. Her writing — pointed, taut and economical — is equally forthright, irascible, and unapologetically opinionated. Lebowitz worked odd jobs, such as taxi driving, belt peddling, and apartment cleaning (“with a small specialty in Venetian blinds”), before being hired by Andy Warhol as a columnist for Interview. That was followed by a stint at Mademoiselle. Her first book, a collection of essays titled Metropolitan Life, was a bestseller, as was a second collection, Social Studies. By turns ironic, facetious, deadpan, sarcastic, wry, wisecracking, and waggish, Lebowitz’s prose is wickedly entertaining. A raconteur if ever there was one, Lebowitz has long been a regular on various talk shows including those hosted by Jimmy Fallon, Conan O'Brien, and Bill Maher. She can also be seen in various documentary films including the American Experience series on New York City, as well as Mapplethorpe: Look at the Pictures (2016), Regarding Susan Sontag (2014), and Superstar: The Life and Times of Andy Warhol (1990), among others. In 2010 Martin Scorsese directed a documentary about Lebowitz for HBO titled Public Speaking. A limited documentary series, Pretend It's a City, also directed by Martin Scorsese, premiered on Netflix in 2021, and was nominated for the 2021 Emmys in the Outstanding Documentary Or Nonfiction Series category. In 2021 she was given the Forte dei Marmi Festival della Satira Lifetime Achievement Award and was a 2021 Foreign Press Honorary Awardee – an award given by the Foreign Press Correspondents Association & Club USA. Pianist Wynona Wang was selected as First Prize winner of the 2018 Concert Artists Guild International Competition, which is just the latest in a series of impressive first prize performances, along with the 2017 Wideman International Piano Competition in Louisiana. Wynona was also awarded the 2019 “Charlotte White” Career Grant awarded by the Salon de Virtuosi in New York City. An active performer in China, Europe and the United States, Wynona’s recent performances include appearances with the Northwest Florida Symphony Orchestra, the Meadows Symphony Orchestra of SMU in Dallas, and such major festivals as PianoTexas, Morningside Music Bridge in Calgary, Canada, the International Keyboard Institute & Festival in New York City, and the Chautauqua Institution. Internationally, Wynona has been a featured soloist with the Academic Symphony Orchestra of the National Philharmonic Society of Ukraine, and the Romanian Mihail Jora Philharmonic Orchestra in Italy. She has also given numerous solo piano recitals in China—including cities such as Beijing, Qingdao, Hangzhou, Wuhan, Shenzhen, Kunming, Ningbo, and Dalian—as well as in Spain (Madrid) and Indonesia (Jakarta). Born in Beijing, Wynona Wang began playing piano at age 4, and went on to study at both the Music Elementary and Secondary schools at the prestigious Central Conservatory of Music (CCOM) in Beijing. In fall 2016, she was awarded a full scholarship for her Performer’s Diploma at Southern Methodist University in Dallas, and she now lives in New York while pursuing her undergraduate degree at The Juilliard School as a student of Dr. Robert McDonald.

The ever-popular Banff Mountain Film Festival returns to Chico with two evenings of films that offer up stories of remote journeys, groundbreaking expeditions, and cutting-edge adventures told through the eyes of photographers, filmmakers, and explorers from around the globe. As in years past, each evening will feature a different film selection both nights. Join us early for a Party on the Patio each night starting at 6:00pm with live music, local sponsors, and food trucks onsite.

A Bee Story is a uniquely Australian physical theatre show for children and families incorporating a kaleidoscope of circus, acrobatics, dance and live music. It tells the story of Queen Bee and Worker Bee who must work together to rebuild their hive after being destroyed by a bushfire. But things never quite go to plan…

Join the bees on their buzzy adventures and be enchanted by their pollen-collecting skills, honey-making abilities, and superbee strength. Founded in 2003 by Craig Martin, Classic Albums Live takes the greatest albums and recreates them live on stage - note for note, cut for cut, using the best musicians. “Think of it as a recital,” says Martin, “these albums are historic and stand the test of time.” Forgoing costumes and impersonations, Classic Albums Live has found success in concentrating solely on the music. “We don’t dress up or wear any sort of costume. As the colossal Christmas tree shoots skyward and a battle erupts between the Nutcracker and the Mouse King to the beautiful almond blossoms blanketing the stage and bumble bees a flutter, the ballet magically transports Angeline and the audience to an enchanted land of wildflowers where visitors from faraway lands, waltzing flowers and special surprises await all! The historic tradition of mariachi music has its roots of origin in cities such as Guadalajara and Mexico City. As the ever-evolving genre's influence spread, it reached Chicago and birthed the Mariachi Herenciade México. The energetic, virtuosic Latin GRAMMY-nominated group has issued chart-topping albums and performed across the North American continent. Nuestra Herencia, their 2017 debut album, topped the Latinstreaming charts. 2018's Herencia de la Tierra Mía was produced by celebrated industryveteran Javier Limón and charted atop all major streaming services. 2019's Esenciatopped industry charts, while a second volume, issued in 2020 performed similarly. Sheng Wang is a comedian, actor and writer originally from Houston, TX. His first Netflix special, Sweet & Juicy, released in September 2022 and was produced and directed by Ali Wong. He was a featured stand-up on HBO’s “2 Dope Queens” special and also wrote for the ABC show “Fresh Off the Boat.” Sheng resides in Los Angeles and in his time off, he enjoys exploring botanical gardens and discovering new ways to snack.

That first line from Nickel Creek’s seventh album Celebrants likely prophesies the warm response awaiting the Americana-bluegrass group’s first all-new release in nine years.

The Syncopated Ladies are based in Los Angeles, CA and created by EMMY AWARD NOMINATED, tap dancer and choreographer, Chloé Arnold, protégé of Debbie Allen.

After selling out venues throughout the country, the smash-hit, all-Native comedy show, Good Medicine, comes to the Chico Performances for a one-night-stand of stand-up! Hosted and produced by comedian Jackie Keliiaa (Netflix) the showcase features the best and brightest Native comedians across North America. Founded in 2020, Good Medicine was first launched as a virtual comedy show raising funds for tribes impacted by covid-19. Since the show’s humble beginnings on Keliiaa’s kitchen table, Good Medicine has sold-out shows across the country and featured comedians hailing from over 30 tribal Nations who have been seen on Comedy Central, Netflix, ABC, NBC, FX and more!
