In a cultural landscape filled with endless pundits and talking heads, Fran Lebowitz stands out as one of our most insightful social commentators. Her essays and interviews offer her acerbic views on current events and the media – as well as pet peeves including tourists, baggage-claim areas, after- shave lotion, adults who roller skate, children who speak French, or anyone who is unduly tan. The New York Times Book Review calls Lebowitz an "important humorist in the classic tradition." Purveyor of urban cool, Lebowitz is a cultural satirist whom many call the heir to Dorothy Parker. “Success didn't spoil me, I've always been insufferable.” This is Lebowitz off the cuff. Her writing — pointed, taut and economical — is equally forthright, irascible, and unapologetically opinionated. Lebowitz worked odd jobs, such as taxi driving, belt peddling, and apartment cleaning (“with a small specialty in Venetian blinds”), before being hired by Andy Warhol as a columnist for Interview. That was followed by a stint at Mademoiselle. Her first book, a collection of essays titled Metropolitan Life, was a bestseller, as was a second collection, Social Studies. By turns ironic, facetious, deadpan, sarcastic, wry, wisecracking, and waggish, Lebowitz’s prose is wickedly entertaining. A raconteur if ever there was one, Lebowitz has long been a regular on various talk shows including those hosted by Jimmy Fallon, Conan O'Brien, and Bill Maher. She can also be seen in various documentary films including the American Experience series on New York City, as well as Mapplethorpe: Look at the Pictures (2016), Regarding Susan Sontag (2014), and Superstar: The Life and Times of Andy Warhol (1990), among others. In 2010 Martin Scorsese directed a documentary about Lebowitz for HBO titled Public Speaking. A limited documentary series, Pretend It's a City, also directed by Martin Scorsese, premiered on Netflix in 2021, and was nominated for the 2021 Emmys in the Outstanding Documentary Or Nonfiction Series category. In 2021 she was given the Forte dei Marmi Festival della Satira Lifetime Achievement Award and was a 2021 Foreign Press Honorary Awardee – an award given by the Foreign Press Correspondents Association & Club USA. Pianist Wynona Wang was selected as First Prize winner of the 2018 Concert Artists Guild International Competition, which is just the latest in a series of impressive first prize performances, along with the 2017 Wideman International Piano Competition in Louisiana. Wynona was also awarded the 2019 “Charlotte White” Career Grant awarded by the Salon de Virtuosi in New York City. An active performer in China, Europe and the United States, Wynona’s recent performances include appearances with the Northwest Florida Symphony Orchestra, the Meadows Symphony Orchestra of SMU in Dallas, and such major festivals as PianoTexas, Morningside Music Bridge in Calgary, Canada, the International Keyboard Institute & Festival in New York City, and the Chautauqua Institution. Internationally, Wynona has been a featured soloist with the Academic Symphony Orchestra of the National Philharmonic Society of Ukraine, and the Romanian Mihail Jora Philharmonic Orchestra in Italy. She has also given numerous solo piano recitals in China—including cities such as Beijing, Qingdao, Hangzhou, Wuhan, Shenzhen, Kunming, Ningbo, and Dalian—as well as in Spain (Madrid) and Indonesia (Jakarta). Born in Beijing, Wynona Wang began playing piano at age 4, and went on to study at both the Music Elementary and Secondary schools at the prestigious Central Conservatory of Music (CCOM) in Beijing. The ever-popular Banff Mountain Film Festival returns to Chico with two evenings of films that offer up stories of remote journeys, groundbreaking expeditions, and cutting-edge adventures told through the eyes of photographers, filmmakers, and explorers from around the globe. As in years past, each evening will feature a different film selection both nights. As the ever-evolving genre's influence spread, it reached Chicago and birthed the Mariachi Herenciade México. Grammy Award winning duo Rodrigo y Gabriela grew up on an eclectic mix of classic rock, heavy metal and flamenco, a rare alchemy of influences that still informs their work today. Based on the beloved novel by Rick Riordan, The Lightning Thief tells the story of teenager Percy Jackson, son of Greek god Poseidon, as he sets out on a hero’s journey of self-discovery, grappling with monsters and mysterious mayhem along the way to find Zeus’ missing lightning bolt, and prevent war among the gods. Percy’s experience is one that resonates across cultures and our casting reflects that truth. Performers ranging in age from 10-18 reflecting the youth of our local community. Roles have been cast openly to include different shapes, abilities, ethnicities, and identities. As the playwright, Joe Tracz, says, “The characters in The Lightning Thief are gods and heroes – and gods and heroes can look like any of us.”

José Hernández's inspring life story takes him on a journey from a migrant farmworker to a NASA astronaut. Hernández wanted to fly in space ever since he heard that the first Hispanic-American had been chosen to travel into space. "I was hoeing a row of sugar beets in a field near Stockton, Calif., and I heard on my transistor radio that Franklin Chang-Diaz had been selected for the Astronaut Corps," says Hernández, who was a senior in high school at the time. "I was already interested in science and engineering," Hernández remembers, "but that was the moment I said, 'I want to fly in space.' And that's something I've been striving for each day since then." And now that hard work has paid off. He was selected to begin training as a mission specialist as part of the 2004 astronaut candidate class

The Syncopated Ladies are based in Los Angeles, CA and created by EMMY AWARD NOMINATED, tap dancer and choreographer, Chloé Arnold, protégé of Debbie Allen.

After selling out venues throughout the country, the smash-hit, all-Native comedy show, Good Medicine, comes to the Chico Performances for a one-night-stand of stand-up! Hosted and produced by comedian Jackie Keliiaa (Netflix) the showcase features the best and brightest Native comedians across North America. Founded in 2020, Good Medicine was first launched as a virtual comedy show raising funds for tribes impacted by covid-19. Since the show’s humble beginnings on Keliiaa’s kitchen table, Good Medicine has sold-out shows across the country and featured comedians hailing from over 30 tribal Nations who have been seen on Comedy Central, Netflix, ABC, NBC, FX and more!
