Chickenshed is an inclusive theatre company founded in 1974 by musician Jo Collins and teacher Mary Ward. Initially operating from local church halls, they gained support from Lady Elizabeth Byng, who provided a disused chicken shed as their base, giving rise to the name Chickenshed. The organization embraced true inclusion in the 1980s, pioneering an ethos that welcomed performers of all abilities. With the support of prominent figures like Princess Diana, Chickenshed grew in reputation and influence. In 1994, they established a permanent home in Southgate, North London. Chickenshed expanded its inclusive model into education, offering BTEC, Foundation Degrees, and Bachelor of Arts programs. The 21st century saw further growth with the creation of ShedLink, facilitating the establishment of Sheds across the UK and internationally, including in Finland and New York City. In 2023, Chickenshed gained widespread recognition through a performance on Britain's Got Talent, spreading their message of inclusion globally. The organization continues to impact lives through its commitment to inclusive theatre and education.
