Britain’s only orchestra of Black and ethnically diverse musicians returns to the Proms with music that celebrates its own heritage as well as universal dreams and aspirations.

Stewart Goodyear is the soloist in his own vibrant celebration of Caribbean music, Callaloo, while Duke Ellington’s jazzed-up take on Tchaikovsky’s ballet The Nutcracker turns waltz into swing and Sugar Plum into heady rum. Conductor Andrew Grams ends with the most emotionally intense and musically robust symphony Tchaikovsky ever wrote, his heartbreakingly autobiographical ‘Pathétique’.

The dynamic Jason Max Ferdinand Singers has appeared at Washington DC’s Kennedy Center and collaborated with Coldplay and Jacob Collier, who has described the experience as ‘transformative to a life-altering degree’.

Making its UK debut, these powerful voices present an uplifting matinee, mixing classical, jazz and gospel. Its selection includes the jazz standard ‘Misty’ and Collier’s harmonically shapeshifting ‘World O World’ while exploring themes of faith and freedom, not least in Woody Guthrie’s gospel-influenced song that declares: ‘This land was made for you and me.’

Our Proms Choral Day culminates with one of music’s everlasting masterpieces, Handel’s Messiah. The choral movements are where this work’s most exciting, most joyous and most explosive music is to be found. ‘I did think I did see all Heaven before me,’ wrote the composer as he finished this musical reflection on faith, one that still brings audiences to their feet nearly three centuries after it was written.

One of Britain’s best-loved choirs, The Sixteen – under Harry Christophers – returns to the Proms on Choral Day for some of the most serene and spiritual choral works written in England during the Victorian period – music in line with this ensemble’s singular combination of style and beauty, blend and expression.

‘None of his works came as directly from his inmost heart as this.’ So said Mahler’s wife Alma of her husband’s Symphony No. 6, a score of such terrifying and ominous power that it came to spook even the composer himself. Across the symphony’s four movements we hear Mahler grappling with his own demise – clinging hopelessly to love, light and the beauty of life.

Prom 62: Rattle conducts Mahler’s 6th

Sir Simon Rattle makes his first Proms appearance as the new Chief Conductor of one of Germany’s leading ensembles, the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra.

After a highly anticipated new work written for the orchestra by longtime Rattle collaborator Thomas Adès, we conclude our Bruckner 200th-anniversary celebrations. Few scores convey Anton Bruckner’s distinctive combination of mystery and warmth like his Symphony No. 4, the so-called ‘Romantic’ symphony that has proved his most enduringly popular.

William Blake’s great poem pitting childlike wonder and naivety against adult maturity and experience, Auguries of Innocence, contains the resonant line ‘eternity in an hour’.

Eric Whitacre, whose apparently weightless music is often said to stop time, takes that line as the title for his Proms commission, receiving its world premiere at this Late Night Prom. Expect shimmering beauty and heavenly harmonies as Whitacre himself conducts the BBC Singers and an ensemble of strings and percussion.

The twin peaks of tonight’s all-French programme are two masterpieces from Gabriel Fauré and Maurice Ravel, beginning with the former’s consolatory Requiem, a work whose clean lines, pure vocal textures and elegant orchestrations appear to propose a new philosophy of religion.

Few orchestras know Berlioz’s Symphonie fantastique better than the Orchestre de Paris, which performed the work at its very first concert in 1967 and has done so at every significant milestone in its history ever since.

Here France’s most illustrious orchestra visits the Proms with its renowned Chief Conductor Klaus Mäkelä for a mouth-watering programme that indulges all the beauty, delicacy and emotion of French music while marking another of the most thrilling scores ever to have come out of Paris: Stravinsky’s tuneful and mischievous puppet-show ballet, Petrushka.

Marking a century since the flautist, composer and conductor’s birth in Ohio, Edwin Outwater and the BBC Concert Orchestra celebrate the man and his music in styles ranging from jazz to light classical and film music. Among the classics are the slinky ‘Lujon’ and themes from The Pink Panther and Peter Gunn, joined by gems from the lounge music and space-age pop genres Mancini helped inspire, including easy-going tracks by Burt Bacharach, Les Baxter and Juan García Esquivel.

Poor, homesick and misunderstood, Anton Bruckner plunged into despair during the winter of 1875. From the depths of his anguish came astonishing proof of his triumph of will: the composer’s spirited Symphony No. 5.

Three stellar soloists come together to form a classical supergroup. Emanuel Ax, Leonidas Kavakos and Yo-Yo Ma have enjoyed a partnership stretching back a decade and now they lavish their vast gifts and experience on an all-Beethoven programme.

Prom 54: Beethoven for Three

The first of the Berliner Philharmoniker’s two Proms this season comprises a pair of musical love letters. One is to a person: Robert Schumann’s Piano Concerto was written for his wife Clara (whose own concerto is performed on the First Night). It’s a work whose supple and sensual music offers touching insights into one of the most passionate musical romances of the 19th century.

Prom 55: Berliner Philharmoniker with Kirill Petrenko

Sir Andrew Davis (1944–2024), the celebrated British conductor famed for delighting audiences at the BBC Proms with his sparkling wit and exquisite musicianship, is remembered in this Prom from the BBC Symphony Orchestra and Martyn Brabbins.

The centrepiece of the concert is Reich’s Jacob’s Ladder, the composer’s ‘dream of ascending and descending a ladder between heaven and earth’ that was deemed ‘energetic, meditative, light, graceful and refreshing’ when premiered in New York last spring.

Prom 53: Stravinsky, Tippett and Elgar

Glyndebourne Festival Opera makes its traditional visit to the Proms with that most red- blooded of red-blooded operas, Carmen. Bizet’s musical tale of a Gypsy factory-worker who seduces a military corporal before discarding him for the more glamorous toreador has all the ingredients of a tightly sprung operatic drama.

Prom 52: Bizet’s Carmen from Glyndebourne

All the way from northern Mali, Tinariwen come to London for a Late Night Prom in celebration of their pioneering and distinctive sound. Esteemed exponents of the so-called ‘desert blues’, this collective of Tuareg musicians from the Sahara region of their homeland combine traditional Tuareg and African music with elements of Western rock and jazz, earning themselves a worldwide reputation and a Praetorius Music Prize.

Prom 51: Tinariwen – The Desert Blues

For their second consecutive night at the Proms, Jakub Hrůša and the Czech Philharmonic bring to life the blazing fanfares, raw outcries and hushed humility of Leoš Janáček’s unparalleled Glagolitic Mass. Inspiration for the work struck the composer in a misty wood. ‘Its moist scent was the incense,’ he wrote. ‘I felt a cathedral grow out of the giant expanse of woods ... Now I hear the voice of each arch-priest in the tenor solo, a maiden angel in the soprano – and in the choir I hear our people.’

When the great Czech composer Antonín Dvořák died, his protégé and son-in-law Josef Suk wrote three movements of a symphony in his mentor’s memory. Then tragedy struck again: Suk’s wife, Dvořák’s own daughter, died too. Added to the long-breathed, lyrical symphony Suk had written came two new movements: a furious scherzo and a transcendental statement of acceptance, finding peace in the beauty and renewal of the natural world.

One day in 1983, the troubled American composer Julius Eastman presented his ex-boyfriend with a rolled-up score – that of his Symphony No. 2. The music, which wasn’t seen again or performed until 2018, tells of their love and its disintegration in an orchestral language all of its own – part drone piece, part thematic symphony.

Prokofiev’s Third Piano Concerto isn’t just a surefire showpiece that paints a vivid picture of its creator’s acerbic spirit, it’s also a treacherously difficult work conceived for Prokofiev’s own extraordinary pianistic prowess.

The pictures Modest Mussorgsky saw at an exhibition in 1874 were fantastical and surreal – uniting objects and animals, poetic atmosphere and architectural precision.
The City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra’s Prom under Kazuki Yamada presents a rare opportunity to hear the music those images inspired in Mussorgsky in the picturesque orchestration by Proms founder-conductor Henry Wood, which pre-dates Ravel’s by seven years. Ravel fans can revel in the enchanted world of his fairy-tale ballet Mother Goose.

Prom 43: Pictures at an Exhibition

Beethoven’s final symphony is also his most powerful – a manifesto for social change, political upheaval and the limitless possibilities of human artistic expression.

Mark the 200th anniversary of the monumental Ninth Symphony with a signature memorised presentation and performance from the Aurora Orchestra and Nicholas Collon, in collaboration with the BBC Singers, National Youth Choir of Great Britain, actor Rhiannon May and actor/BSL-interpreter Thomas Simper.

The divine and the human appear to co-exist in Mozart’s music. This celebration of the composer’s enduring genius brings ‘peak’ Mozart to the Royal Albert Hall, culminating in the continuous stream of liberated musical joy that is his final symphony, the Jupiter.

Nobody does Bach quite like the Bach Collegium Japan. The ensemble makes a welcome return to the Proms for the composer’s concentrated depiction of Christ’s arrest, rendition and execution – the St John Passion. Probing, unsettling, dramatic and beautiful, Bach’s work is known as much for its optimism as for its turbulence, its final bars appearing to invite all of us to imagine a brighter future.

In this coruscating ballet music he unleashed for the first time the vivid colours that would captivate generations of theatregoers. He had the perfect subject matter in the compelling story of the young Prince Ivan outwitting the evil sorcerer Kashchey and freeing the 13 enchanted Princesses with the help of the magical Firebird.

Sir Antonio Pappano and his London Symphony Orchestra are joined by three choirs and three outstanding vocal soloists for a work of hope that emerged from the ashes of destruction.

Prom 37: Britten’s War Requiem

In the summer of 1826 Felix Mendelssohn stumbled upon a German translation of A Midsummer Night’s Dream made by August Wilhelm Schlegel. Spellbound, the 17-year-old composer wrote an orchestral overture for the play and, another 17 years later, augmented it with yet more scene-setting music – the most enchanting and characterful he would write.

Ilan Volkov and friends celebrate milestones from the past 100 years of American jazz, starting with a sequence honouring the ‘Duke’. Mary Lou Williams’ Zodiac Suite from 1945 romps between boogie-woogie and dissonance in its response to astrological signs.
