The main item is Le villi, Puccini’s first opera, written to a libretto based on the same legend as the ballet Giselle. Entered in 1883 into a competition for one-act operas and rejected by the judges, Le villi was staged in Milan the following year and brought Puccini to the attention of Ricordi, the influential publisher, setting him on the path to fame.

Hamasyan’s much-anticipated new conceptual album, The Bird of a Thousand Voices, set for release on Naïve/Believe in August, is inspired by an ancient Armenian tale in which a hero travels into unseen realms to find and bring back a mythical bird – whose thousand different songs will awaken people again and bring harmony to the world.

One of the ultimate New York City party bands, Marc Ribot Y Los Cubanos Postizos (aka ‘The Prosthetic Cubans’) became a must-see attraction in the late 1990s, with its feverishly cooking shows built around arrangements of Cuban bandleader Arsenio Rodríguez – innovator of the son montuno, and two critically acclaimed albums released on Atlantic Records.

Trumpeter, composer and arranger Airelle Besson has made a name for herself on the European jazz scene with her clear and powerful playing. UK-based guitarist Nicolas Meier has carved out a reputation as one of the world’s most original and uniquely talented guitarists. Drawing from a love of Turkish, Eastern & Middle Eastern music, Flamenco, Tango and more – all mixed with jazz – Meier’s versatility and musical fluency extends well beyond even that (so much so that his considerable talents drew the attention of rock guitar legend Jeff Beck who made Nicolas a mainstay in The Jeff Beck Group — carrying him on two world tours over the course of the last several years).

The poet Leopold Senghor wrote of the enticing sounds and smells drifting out of the Cabane Cubaine and tempting passers-by on Rue fontaine. A century later, it’s the intoxicating perfume of the talented Roberto Fonseca that will accompany this jazzy air and take us on a wild dance.

The David Gordon Trio is one of the most innovative jazz trios working today. Filling a vast landscape their music is as likely to plug into bebop, Argentinian zamba, Bach paraphrase or a nursery rhyme as it is to inhabit something more typical of contemporary jazz. Theirs is music existing across boundaries and across time and includes original tunes that have become standards in their own right. Our fourth concert with strings for the EFG London Jazz Festival features the music of four great British jazz talents of the 20th century.

In 1963 Tubby Hayes took popular standards such as I Feel Pretty, The Party’s Over and But Beautiful and arranged and recorded them with the intention of convincing BBC Television to commission a late-night show featuring himself centre stage on tenor saxophone and vibraphone alongside his then-girlfriend, the delightful singer Joy Marshall. Despite the arrangements being amongst Tubby’s best work, the BBC turned him down and so this music has never been performed in public until now.

‘This day the angels sing on earth’: it isn’t Christmas at Cadogan Hall without Harry Christophers and The Sixteen’s extraordinary, atmospheric seasonal celebration.

Christmas is a time for families and old friends – for well-loved tunes and good cheer. But it’s also a time of mystery and wonder: of silent nights, and sounds that echo across centuries. No-one understands that better than Harry Christophers and his world-famous chamber choir The Sixteen, and their annual Christmas celebration is one of the most popular events in the Cadogan Hall calendar.

For many people a firm fixture of the festive period, the combination of Steeleye Span’s Maddy Prior and The Carnival Band has offered a unique take on timeless Christmas music ever since they first came together in 1984.

The pairing resulted not only in the acclaimed album Carols & Capers and many more, but a concert experience like no other. To mark the fortieth anniversary of their artistic relationship, Maddy and The CB will tour the UK in what will be not only a celebration but also a farewell, the last time they will undertake such an outing.

After a year off, Rick Wakeman’s traditional Christmas tour returns to Cadogan Hall this December with an all-new show! In a change from his usual solo Christmas concerts, Rick will be joined by two very special guests: his son and fellow keyboard player Adam Wakeman and Mollie Marriott, daughter of the late Steve Marriott, both of whom performed so brilliantly with Rick on his ‘Return of the Caped Crusader’ tour in February.

When December draws near, The Unthanks will release and tour In Winter – a double-album, gatefold, dream-like winter fantasia, embracing both the dark and the light in the most ritualistic of seasons. returns to Cadogan Hall for its annual performance of the timeless classic, The Snowman, for which the film is shown on the big screen with a live symphony orchestra providing the soundtrack. 15-year-old Alice Mackenzie sings the aria made so famous by Aled Jones: ‘Walking in the Air’.

Following the huge success of The Gruffalo (composed for orchestra and narrator by Philip Mackenzie) at Cadogan Hall last Christmas, it makes a welcome return alongside its sequel, The Gruffalo’s Child. Rather like Peter and the Wolf, each character in the tale is represented by a different instrument of the orchestra… what will the Gruffalo be?
