The Palace Theatre, established in 1914 in Manchester, New Hampshire, is a historic non-profit performing arts venue. Fashioned after its namesake in New York City, it was initially celebrated for its superb construction, stunning decor, and innovative air-conditioning system. The theatre thrived in its early years, hosting vaudeville acts and performers like Jimmy Durante and Bob Hope. However, the advent of silent films and talkies in the 1930s shifted its focus to movies, and by the late 1960s, it had fallen into disrepair. In 1974, a restoration campaign led by John McLane and Mayor Sylvio S. Dupuis, with support from the Norwin S. and Elizabeth N. Bean Foundation, revitalized the theatre. Subsequent decades saw the Palace withstand fire and flood, and in 2018, it expanded with Forever Emma Studios and The Spotlight Room. In 2019, the Rex Theatre was added as a versatile 300-seat venue. Despite the challenges posed by the Covid-19 pandemic, the Palace Theatre reopened in 2021, continuing its mission to enrich the region’s cultural life through a diverse range of performances and educational opportunities. Today, it stands as the only surviving theatre of Manchester's once vibrant "Great White Way."
