John Maus is a truly enigmatic musician. Broadly cut from the synth pop cloth, he’s fashioned the frosty minimalism of its fabric into a cloak of infinite meaning, genuine grace and absurdist humour over the course of three defining albums since 2006. His music is a highly mutable affair, whilst often described as retro-futurist on behalf of the 80’s drum machines and synth sounds employed, John’s music is more personal than the nostalgic re-tread implied. He has released a collaborative project with MIKE titled Old Earth, and more recently released The Corner: Vol. 1, a collaborative project with NYC producer Laron.

As Gum Takes Tooth, the duo of Thomas Fug and Jussi Brightmore plot an adventurous, idiosyncratic and wilfully unpredictable trajectory. Continuously exploring and mutating with an ever more nuanced approach while maintaining a staunch commitment to non-conformity, the band formed in East London in 2009 with wild gigs across the East London underground music and art scene. Early material coalesced primitive DIY Silver Apples electronics, blast beat mayhem, and experimental noise with explosive avant-punk energy.

Na Gabh Dragh is all about having accessible opportunities to learn Gaelic, especially through music and community. Taking a spin on cultural club nights, starting off with a Gaelic lesson, you’ll learn Gaelic vocab which can be used on any night out.

Then put your new language skills to test on the dance floor. Starting off in the Library Gallery, we’ll all be studying hard from 8-10, then move into the Old Lab for 10-3.

We have SALAM KITTY joining us from Glasgow! Beginning their DJ journey in 2020 in Edinburgh, Salam Kitty (FKA Halal Kitty) co-founded Mojxmma alongside Jam Eye out of necessity for a safe space for Queer People of Colour in the city. Now based in Glasgow, resident at Clyde Built Radio, they draw inspiration from their Arabic, African and Scottish roots to weave together eclectic, high energy sets across the genre spectrum. Expect electro, UK bass and techno, Latin club and everything inbetween.

Born in Maryland, USA, Jalen Ngonda chose the city of Liverpool as the place in which he would flourish as a musician. It was at the age of 11 he began getting into music, inspired by his father’s collection of jazz, hip-hop, soul and classical records. Since moving to Liverpool in 2014 Jalen has been playing gigs across the UK and beyond. Two years later Jalen is selling out headline shows in London and Geneva, is breaking into the Viral Charts with his debut single and is supporting touring act such as Laura Mvula, Martha Reeves and Lauryn Hill at the Montreal Jazz Festival. With his tender soulful voice and bluesy arrangements, Jalen will leave you no choice but to be drawn into his world.

Future Get Down are Oliver Kass (vocals, various instruments) alongside Ally Dennis (bass, backing vocals, various instruments), Sam Bidgood (drums, percussion) and Brian Pokora (synthesiser, guitar).

Since forming in 2016, the Edinburgh group have built up an enviable reputation, with their two 2018 EPs and 2021 album garnering support from BBC 6 Music’s Lauren Laverne, Nemone, Vic Galloway and Steve Lamacq.

Local music chameleon Oliver Wardell brings his own chaotic and diverse sounds to Summerhall’s Old Lab with the help of his backing band The Personnel. Oliver’s oscillating mix of songs from his new album “Oliver Died on the way to his home Planet” is represented through a visceral punk and metal sound that isn’t afraid of poking fun at itself. For people whose favourite reaction to stimuli is “what the hell just happened?!”.

Elevate is a night showcasing the brilliant and diverse talents of disabled musicians from Drake Music Scotland. This gig is a celebration of diversity, creativity and the power of music.

The line up features a number of groups and solo performers playing classic covers and original compositions, all backed by a house band. The evening culminates in a headline set from The Varifocals, an over 60s rock band.

Echoes of Prince is a very special and unique show, an opera funk in tribute to The Kid Of Minneapolis, created by the Parisian funk band, Echoes Of, better known recently as Jéroboam on Space Grapes Records and Echoes Of A New Dawn Orchestra for Kyoto Jazz Massive. If you get a chance to see this, it’s probably one of the best projects covering Prince’s music other than former Prince musicians themselves.

Giant Hogweed are an exuberant trumpet-led 5 piece experimenting with jazz harmony, thorny composition and visceral, driving, psychedelic blues. Their sound emerges from the tensions amongst their varied musical backgrounds resulting in something unique. Austrian-born, Edinburgh-based singer-songwriter NANI has shared her first new single since last year’s ‘Pure Frustration’ EP. Like sweet, lo-fi dream, the collection traversed through an eclectic mix of sparse, R&B-infused arrangements and sunny, guitar-driven melodic pop. – Tenement TV

R.A.P. Ferreira fka milo aka scallops hotel is an MC, producer and theorist working in the Black arts tradition commonly categorised as rap. Having founded the label ruby yacht in 2015 and since releasing all of his music through this channel, Ferreira has earned a sizable following within independent hip hop by rigorous, constant touring and an elevated, explorational style of performance. He is known for an uncompromised, utopic flow that speaks directly to the root of the listener.

Started a year ago in an intimate cellar in Marchmont, it has become a monthly jazz, fusion and world beat local gathering. For our Summerhall debut, marking Rhythm & Revolution’s first birthday, we are bringing together two of Edinburgh’s new generation jazz groups, Zoracle and Echo Hotel Collective, alongside DJ Mark Quinn!

Burd Ellen is a project featuring Debbie Armour (Alasdair Roberts, Green Ribbons) and Gayle Brogan (Pefkin, Electroscope). The group uses traditional song to explore and evoke dark landscapes and deep stories. Innovative instrumentation, drone and sound-wash support detailed vocal work to create a unique sonic atmosphere. They are twice featured in The Guardian’s Folk Albums of the Year, 2020 and 2022.

Yeah You is the Welsh father/daughter duo Elvin Brandhi and Gustav Thomas. Their spontaneous sonic outpouring spews unfiltered into jagged pop requiems made from a variety of tools in endlessly shifting contexts.

In 2021 Holy Other returned with Lieve, his first new work to be released in nine years, and the start of a new chapter. Emerging from an extended stay at Bidston Observatory on the Wirral, Lieve was recorded throughout 2020 in the North West of England. Using the acoustics of the observatory — the cavernous basement and the geometrically-perfect wooden domes — Holy Other recorded and resampled material that would become the bedrock of Lieve. A marker in the sand as his first output since 2012’s critically-acclaimed Held, these recordings — including the voice of NYX’s Sian O’Gorman, violin from Simmy Singh and saxophone from Daniel Thorne — were cut, manipulated and pieced together to form Lieve

GRDN: The Lab

LA-based, by way of Florida, rapper YUNGMORPHEUS announces his forthcoming new solo album. Picking up right where he left off with his prolific run of projects in 2022, his new album From Whence It Came was released April 2023 via Lex Records.

From Whence It Came builds on an already extensive catalog from MORPHEUS, whose conversational style slips between sardonic humor and intrepid observations in an instant. The new album provides a lush new patchwork of sounds for MORPHEUS to make his own, laying quintessentially smooth raps over a varied selection of West Coast G-funk, hurried drum n bass rhythms, and soul samples like the slow spin of a radio dial

Dan Willson is Scotland’s acclaimed singer songwriter Withered Hand. He has released three albums and a number of EPs over the last 15 years and has toured internationally, amassing a devoted following while staying close to his DIY roots in the underground music scene.

Lonnie Holley’s art and music, born out of struggle, hardship (but perhaps more importantly), out of furious curiosity and biological necessity, has manifested itself in drawing, painting, sculpture, photography, performance, music and filmmaking. His music and lyrics are improvised on the spot and morph and evolve with every event, concert and recording.

Scottish smallpipes player Brìghde Chaimbeul (pronounched Breetch-er Hime-bowl) is a leading purveyor of experimental Celtic music. A native Gaelic speaker from the Isle of Skye, Brìghde’s style is rooted in her language and culture, but draws inspiration from a variety of global piping traditions, such as from Eastern Europe, Cape Breton and Ireland.

A Certain Ratio

Originally from the Highlands, Niamhy Mac is now based in Scotland’s capital. Despite being a relative newcomer to the live scene, the young artist has already performed at Belladrum Tartan Heart Festival, for Tiny Changes, Sofar Sounds, youth music project Musicplus+ and she’s been championed by Scotland On Sunday and secured airplay via Amazing Radio.

Curiosity Shop is an indie folk group based in Edinburgh, formed by Sonny Scott and Ru Wallace, high-school friends from the West coast of Scotland, who have been writing music together for years. Having moved to Edinburgh, Sonny and Ru formed musical friendships with Duncan Biggar, Yann McAuley, and Louis Hodgson, completing the band. This performance is led by Sonny, who weaves a diverse range of influence into music both individually and collaboratively written. With a set of music designed with intention and purpose, this performance marks the end of his degree, and the beginning of new musical exploration.

Beans released two LPs and one EP on Antipop Consortium’s former label Warp Records after launching his solo career in 2003. Recordings in 2005 were followed by the fourth album Thorns on Adored And Exploited in 2007. In 2011, Beans released his fifth solo album, End It All. on Anticon. It features productions by Four Tet, Sam Fogarino of Interpol, Clark and Son Lux.

Since forming in Edinburgh, Scotland in 2006 Broken Records have established themselves as one of Britain’s best live bands. They’ve toured the UK, Europe, and US extensively, supporting the likes of The National, and playing all major UK and international music festivals, including the main stages of Latitude and Green Man, Glastonbury, and Reading and Leeds.

Thudding, powerful odes to the strength of collectivity and togetherness, David MacGregor’s Broken Chanter bristle with energy and empathy on their incendiary third album Chorus of Doubt. Recorded (and produced) by Paul Savage over 2023’s spring and summer months in Chemikal Underground’s in-house studio Chem 19, Chorus of Doubt is fuelled by a burning desire to resist an encroaching, global tide of misery, informed by a wide-eyed sense of solidarity and the searing truth that a universal humanity is the only path out of darkness.
