Ruby Bridges is a Civil Rights icon, activist, author, and speaker who at the age of six was the first Black student to integrate an all-white elementary school alone in Louisiana. She was born in Mississippi in 1954, the same year the United States Supreme Court handed down its landmark decision ordering the integration of public schools. Her family later moved to New Orleans, where on November 14, 1960, Bridges began attending William Frantz Elementary School, single-handedly initiating the desegregation of public education. Her walk to the front door of the school was immortalized in Norman Rockwell’s painting The Problem We All Live With, in Robert Coles’ book The Story of Ruby Bridges, and in the Disney movie Ruby Bridges.

For years now, Washington-native Eric Byrd has been performing the iconic soundtrack from A Charlie Brown Christmas with his trio at venues across DC, Maryland, and Virginia. The show begins with a screening of the Peanuts holiday classic followed by a live performance of the Vince Guaraldi masterpiece score.

A Frederick community holiday tradition since 1994, director Judith DuBose will conduct a forty-voice chorus, twenty-piece orchestra, and four soloists through select choruses and arias of the Messiah by G. F. Handel. The audience is invited to join the chorus for select numbers such as the Hallelujah Chorus and For Unto Us a Child is Born. Copies of the full vocal score will be for sale in the lobby.

Paul Carr, an acclaimed jazz saxophonist, has released 10 recordings, many reaching the top 10 on the Jazz Week chart. He has performed globally, including for President Clinton and Jordan’s King Hussein. Paul leads five bands and founded the Mid-Atlantic Jazz Festival. An esteemed educator, he mentors students who have joined prestigious institutions and jazz professionals like Terell Stafford and Braxton Cook. Paul also serves as a consultant for several jazz festivals and advocates for jazz education.

The African American Resources, Cultural and Heritage Society (AARCH) invites Frederick’s own Tracie Luck to her glorious return to the Weinberg Center as she takes her beloved audience on a healing path through life’s darkest and brightest moments. A mezzo soprano, Tracie has performed opera nationally and internationally. Join her for jazz, spirituals, the German song cycle of Gustav Mahler’s Songs of a Wayfarer, and Hector Berlioz’s French song cycle Nights of Summer, all with exquisite piano accompaniment. Tracie is joined by the Frederick County Gospel Choir in an inspired finale that rouses the spirit.
