Ludmil Angelov, one of the greatest contemporary interpreters of Chopin, presents some of the most emblematic works of the “genius of the piano.” Among the works is Chopin’s tragic “Poem of the death”—his Sonata No. 2 in B-flat minor, as well some of his most emblematic preludes, mazurkas, nocturnes, and polonaises.

Dream celebrates some of the most evocative music written and adapted for the guitar, with works from across the ages and around the world. As the first guitarist ever invited to join the prestigious Rebanks Family Fellowship at The Royal Conservatory, Tim Beattie’s “guitar dazzles … moving between textures and moods with ease” (MusicWorks Magazine). Beattie’s performance career has taken him to stages across North America and Europe, with recent appearances at the Bath Festival (England), Kitara Nova Helsinki (Finland), the Banff Centre for the Performing Arts (Alberta), among many others.

A program of time-honoured songs paired with contemporary Canadian works; a celebration of the past, present, and future of classical song, including music by the COC’s composer-in-residence, Cecilia Livingston.

Over the Sea and Back Again

Join artists from The Toronto Consort, internationally recognized for its excellence in the performance of medieval, renaissance and early baroque music. This performance will be an exploration of early music, with ties to contemporary societal values.

Early Music Exploration

Audiences will have the special opportunity to hear the world premiere of Toronto composer Dustin Peters’ Ekphrasis for celesta and ensemble. Artists of the COC Orchestra will round out the program with Stravinsky’s Dumbarton Oaks and Haydn’s Il Distratto Symphony.

Tell me a Story

Presented at the Canadian Opera Company Theatre (227 Front St. E.) this world premiere sets out to reclaim Black Canadian singer Portia White’s story, evoking memories of the past as a form of political resistance.

The opera that launched Verdi's career, Nabucco is a sweeping saga featuring some of the most passionate music ever written. Never before performed at the COC, this is opera at its most spectacular: a rousing epic of the search for hope amid brutal cruelty and oppression, with a cast of over 120 performers.

Queen Christine of Sweden was raised as a boy by her father during a period of extraordinary change. At the height of the Scientific Revolution, she employed the philosopher René Descartes as her tutor, sparking an intellectual and spiritual transformation of massive historical significance.

La Reine-garçon

This landmark of 20th-century music is brought to life in a new production from the extraordinary imagination of South African artist William Kentridge, offering audiences an immersive, interdisciplinary experience described as “a breathtaking masterpiece... a work of art across many genres."

Wozzeck

Tchaikovsky’s Eugene Onegin is one of opera’s most romantic masterpieces, an aching meditation on happiness undone. Canadian director Robert Carsen’s stunningly simple staging enjoys an international reputation as “a piece of contemporary operatic history” (The Globe and Mail) and returns to the COC for the first time since 2018.
