A Symphony of Diversity: Exploring Esbjerg Ensemble's Vibrant Musical Showcase

Welcome to a concert featuring Beethoven's timeless tones in conjunction with works by four other remarkable composers, whose creativity and unique voices have contributed significantly to the modern musical landscape.

Rhythmic energy characterizes both Nørgård and Martinus' works. In  Fire over Water  both fire and water are present and an intense rhythmic energy describes the contrasting elements. In Martinus' work the rhythmic energy is shown in an expressive dialogue between violin and cello and at the same time with a refined balance between the two instruments.

A rhythmic intensity is continued in the alternation with lyrical passages in Milhaud's suite inspired by the French medieval atmosphere with musical depictions of everything from jesters to hunting scenes.

The music takes us around the world to this very special concert with both a brand new premiere and with the young pianist star Valdemar Wenzel Most, who is once again a guest of the Esbjerg Ensemble. 

From Eastern Europe, we will listen to a Romanian rhapsody by Enescu, who himself was a legendary composer and virtuoso musician on both violin and piano. 

Russian Shostakovich's work was composed when he was just 16 years old, and compared to his later works, it also sounds very much like the romantic style from the previous century.

Feel the magic of music when masterpieces by Brahms, Klughardt and Schuller come together in a concert with rich harmonies, emotional sounds and the tonal language of jazz. 

Brahms has composed some of the most beloved chamber music, loved by both musicians and listeners, and the music both fascinates and inspires constantly. It is music in a romantic tone language full of emotions and rich sounds and at the same time built up with a clear structure. Brahms lived most of his life in Vienna, but had roots in Hamburg – and perhaps that is precisely why his music also carries a fundamental tone of Nordic weight and reflection.

In a tour of recent Nordic music, this concert offers several examples of composers who were inspired by elements from early modernism and neoclassicism and who at the same time held fast to their Nordic origins.

Both the Swedish Rosenberg and the Norwegian Sæverud and our own Carl Nielsen introduced modernist musical ideas into national romantic-based musical cultures. With Sæverud this is already visible in the titles, which refer to Norwegian folk music, and with Carl Nielsen this is heard through his creation of his own musical language, where he mixes Danish folk tunes and impressionism, of which his work “Pan and Syrinx” is a typical example.

Atmospheric music from Esbjerg Ensemble, the choral voices from the Conservatory's Girls' Choir and the Trinity Church's Boys' and Men's Choir will surround us and the church room will be filled with the beautiful tones of Christmas.

Esbjerg Ensemble will be visited by one of Denmark's most well-known, beloved and internationally recognized classical musicians, Michala Petri. Petri was known as a musical prodigy who shone early with her fabulous virtuosity, especially in the classical recorder repertoire from the Baroque era.

Experience a concert where the sound of music is at the center and where the concert's composers, across styles and expressions, have a special sense of the sound of music.

Together with pianist Christian Ihle Hadland, we take you on a journey through French music from the Romantic period in the 1860s to the present day. On the journey, you will feel the composers' nuances and feelings for the different expressions and sounds.

The music will range widely from the romantic Taffanel and Fauré's emotional tones to the modernist approach of Roussel, Boulez and Pécou.

Esbjerg Ensemble's opening concert has the sea as its theme. The concert begins with three festive sailor's songs by the English Malcolm Arnold. The sea continues to play a role in Bruun's Letters to the Sea , which has given its name to the concert. Here, it is very much about an inner sea, inspired by the author Ursula Andkjær-Olsen : "You could write a letter to the sea and ask it to lie down..." .

The Coming Of Spring

The music captivates with large, mixed ensembles and with both great emotion and humor. Dvorak is perhaps history's first and greatest National Romantic composer. His tonal language is inspired by the late romanticism of Wagner and Liszt, but he combines it with catchy folk melodies, inspired by Czech folk music. When he wrote the string quintet at the age of 34, he was well on his way to becoming a well-known and loved name throughout Europe.

We begin the concert in the 21st century with a "Still Life with Avalanche" - a paradoxical title that fits well with the energetic and unpredictable music of the American composer Mazzoli.

This year we are dazzling again with our traditional Christmas concert held in the beautiful Ribe Cathedral.

Esbjerg Ensemble's percussionist and wind players line up around the charismatic Norwegian pianist Kristoffer Hyldig in a program that crosses from east to west and through time.

The music at this concert is "real" Viennese classics". Vienna was Europe's musical stronghold and melting pot in the latter part of the 18th century. Here, a new musical style emerged that, compared to the Italian Baroque and Rococo of the past, was less elaborate and more simple and expressive. All the music we know and practice today as "classical music" has its roots there.

Join us on a very special musical adventure. English cellist and composer Birchall has set music to two of the most beloved stories from English literature, and actress Lotte Andersen brings the words to life.

The Wind in the Willows is the beautiful, crazy and perhaps also a little creepy story about the badger, the rat and the mole, who live their quiet lives by the river, but their friend, the flamboyant and transgressive toad, gets into an accident with his car, and they have to help him.  

Lewis Carroll's Alice in Wonderland has been made in countless versions and has, with its quirky characters and inventions, inspired a multitude of artists in music, film, visual arts and theatre. An incredible story about the girl Alice, who is bored and therefore crawls down the rabbit hole and sets out on a wondrous journey in a very special land.

Ensemble MidtVest is based primarily at the HEART art museum and creates exciting musical experiences in the tension between traditional chamber concerts and innovative outreach formats.

Welcome to a concert with Esbjerg Ensemble's own musicians as soloists and with oboe, horn and percussion at the center. 

Look forward to Gerald Finzi's beautiful  Interlude in A minor , played by our oboist David Daniel Dinu, where the interaction with the homogeneous sound of the string quartet emphasizes the lyrical sound of the oboe. And to Jovilet's Sérénade , where the oboe is again at the forefront of the soundscape, but in the interaction with the rest of the ensemble retains its chamber musical expression.
