The New Standards started in 2005 as an off-shoot project between Minneapolis-based musicians and friends Chan Poling (piano), Steve Roehm (vibes), and John Munson (bass). Remy was a visionary, a loving son, an inspirational chef and mentor, and a ray of light for so many people. Jonathan Butler is a singer-songwriter and guitarist who leads a life few can imagine. He was born in South Africa under the shadow of apartheid and raised in poverty. However, Butler became the first non-white artist to be played on South African radio and appear on national television. His musical abilities would take him away from the world he grew up in. But Jonathan would neither forget the plight of his fellow South Africans, nor the man that led them to freedom. It is for this reason Nelson Mandela credits Butler’s music as having inspired him during his imprisonment. In many ways, Jonathan Butler is representative of South Africa.

“I remember the first time my pawpaw took me down to the Black Bayou,” Robert Finley recalls on “Alligator Bait”. The talking blues number closes out his visceral and vibrant new record. The guitars pop and crackle around him, merging into a slow rhythmic crawl like an airboat along muddy waters. The seventy-year-old Louisiana native casts back in his memory for this harrowing story. Dressed in swamp boots and waders, the kid “stepped on a log and the log moved!” His grandfather shot the gator that snapped at him, but the boy quickly realized he was intended as bait.

The Minnesota-born guitarist, songwriter and interpreter of traditional music has released nineteen albums over two decades. Also, he has been known to perform up to 275 shows a year. She spent her early childhood mimicking the voices and instrumentation of jazz legends in her father’s record collection. Then, this gave rise to exploring the Golden Age of standards in her early teens.

Although he is only in his early forties, Grammy winner Michael Cleveland has a lifetime of accolades to his credit. Cleveland picked up the fiddle at age four. By the time he was nine, he was sitting in with legend Bill Monroe at the Bean Blossom Bluegrass Festival. Soon after, he brought his virtuosic style to the Grand Ole Opry as a guest of Alison Krauss. Also, he was handpicked for the International Bluegrass Music Association’s Bluegrass Youth All-Stars before he was fourteen.

Laurel Canyon Boulevard connects northern L.A. suburbs in the San Fernando Valley to artsy West Hollywood and the now-infamous Sunset Strip. The Canyon housed artists as early as the beginning of the 20th century as major motion-picture companies set up production around Los Angeles. The Canyon became a sort of de facto artist community as the entertainment and nightlife industry grew. Musicians especially enjoyed the rural feel and seclusion the canyon provided but also its proximity to the nightlife on Sunset Boulevard and beyond. Fast forward to 1965, when our story starts…

Joep Beving has been one with the piano from an early age. He was forced to end his musical studies at the conservatory and instead continued to get a degree in public policy and public administration. However, his love for his instrument never perished. Where once his goal was to hit as many notes per minute as physically possible, his style of playing has changed over the years, searching for a particular aesthetic essence. His path was illuminated by a piano that Beving inherited from his grandmother when she passed away in 2009. This instrument insisted on a gentler touch and a gracious pace, which eventually led Beving to adapt to a more classical vocabulary to tell his story.

Cedric Burnside has the blues in his blood. Loved worldwide for his guitar playing and vocals, he is also an acclaimed drummer and songwriter. He is the son of blues drummer Calvin Jackson and grandson of blues singer, songwriter, and guitarist R.L. Burnside. Over the last two decades, Cedric has become one of the foremost performers of Delta-style folk blues, specifically Hill Country blues.

Shawn taught Joni Mitchell her first guitar techniques and gave George Harrison of the Beatles his first sitar lessons (having himself spent time with Ravi Shankar).
