Here, three independent personalities with eclectic tastes and styles provide music with an obtuse Midwestern charm.

Additionally, they are accompanied by a devilishly good ensemble (Joe Pulice, drums and Gary Raynor, bass). Charles Lloyd is a musical giant who holds a rarefied place among American artists. As a jazz saxophonist steeped in the blues of his native Memphis, he has truly made history. For instance, his 1966 album, Forest Flower: Live at Monterey, became one of the first jazz recordings to sell a million copies. Moreover, his quartet was the first jazz group to appear at San Francisco’s famed Fillmore Auditorium. Additionally, Lloyd headlined other rock palaces, sharing billing with Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, Cream, the Grateful Dead, and Jefferson Airplane. Consequently, in 1967, Downbeat Magazine voted him Jazz Artist of the Year.

A master lyricist and satirical storyteller, John Hiatt delivers songs filled with tales of redemption, relationships and surrendering on his own terms. Hiatt’s finest album is 1987’s Bring the Family. Soon before Willie Watson turned 18, he met God in an apple orchard. Or at the very least, he met there a man named Ruby Love, the older friend of a high-school buddy. Also, Love had an enormous Martin guitar and a seemingly bigger understanding of the American folk songbook. Watson, a high-school dropout from upstate New York’s Finger Lakes, was existentially thirsty. Furthermore, he was fast on his way to his first heartbreak and in a first band that didn’t take itself seriously enough. Then, in that magical apple orchard, Watson and Love sang those old songs together: “Worried Man Blues” and “Tennessee Waltz.”

Musiq Soulchild, born Taalib Johnson in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, is a pioneering hip-hop soul artist. Known for his raw talent, Musiq built his reputation by beatboxing for MCs, freestyling on the open mic circuit, and performing acapella for strangers on the streets. He chose the name “Soulchild” to honor his biggest influences, including Stevie Wonder, Donny Hathaway, and Marvin Gaye.

With profound sadness, the family of Jeremy Lee Hines Pettus (“Remy”) has shared that he passed away July 2, 2024. Remy was a visionary, a loving son, an inspirational chef and mentor, and a ray of light for so many people. Born October 1, 1982 in Minneapolis to Cecily Hines and Tom Pettus, Remy was a talented young man, who went on to become one of the preeminent chefs in Minnesota. He graduated from the International Baccalaureate Program at Southwest H.S., then completed three years at Wisconsin-Madison, before enrolling in and graduating from the Culinary Institute of America’s flagship program in Hyde Park, New York.

Although born in South Carolina, singer/songwriter Dave Barnes spent most of his childhood in Mississippi, where he formed an early attachment to hip-hop but was also exposed to classic soul, blues, and R&B by his parents. He later enrolled at Middle Tennessee State University and began writing songs for other artists. Barnes also played solo shows on campus, and by the time he graduated with a degree in recording industry management, he’d decided to pursue his own music career.

Lauded vocalist Lizz Wright encapsulates an illustrious twenty-year career as one of the great modern American singers. Therefore, her most recent album, 2024’s Shadow, was released on her label Blues & Greens Records. On Shadow, Wright pens five originals with special guests Angelique Kidjo and Meshell Ndegeocello. Renowned for her singular writing style across six critically acclaimed studio albums, Wright also beautifully weaves into her recordings unforgettable renditions of songs by artists she loves.

Jonathan Butler is a singer-songwriter and guitarist who leads a life few can imagine. He was born in South Africa under the shadow of apartheid and raised in poverty. However, Butler became the first non-white artist to be played on South African radio and appear on national television. His musical abilities would take him away from the world he grew up in. But Jonathan would neither forget the plight of his fellow South Africans, nor the man that led them to freedom. It is for this reason Nelson Mandela credits Butler’s music as having inspired him during his imprisonment. In many ways, Jonathan Butler is representative of South Africa.

“I remember the first time my pawpaw took me down to the Black Bayou,” Robert Finley recalls on “Alligator Bait”. The talking blues number closes out his visceral and vibrant new record. The guitars pop and crackle around him, merging into a slow rhythmic crawl like an airboat along muddy waters. The seventy-year-old Louisiana native casts back in his memory for this harrowing story. Dressed in swamp boots and waders, the kid “stepped on a log and the log moved!” His grandfather shot the gator that snapped at him, but the boy quickly realized he was intended as bait.

Two-time Juno Award-winning singer-songwriter Dominique Fils-Aimé places the history of African American musical culture at the heart of her work. Based in Montreal, she reflects on the social realities that have influenced the genres of blues, jazz and soul. Moreover, her trilogy highlights the history of African American music. Thus, three albums in quick succession were inspired by soul icons such as Billie Holiday, Nina Simone and Etta James.

By now, if you know the ‘ukulele, you might know the name, of the innovator who is Jake Shimabukuro. He has captivated audiences around the world with his unique and dynamic style. With his mother as his first teacher of the instrument, Jake embraced a deep love and respect for the `ukulele. Additionally, he has explored new and unexpected ways to push the boundaries of what was possible on four humble strings. Each album showcased his mastery of the instrument and his ability to weave together diverse genres. To that end, he creates a cohesive and captivating musical experience. Furthermore, he is undoubtedly one of the most innovative and exciting musicians of his generation. Also, he is changing the perception of the instrument itself and breaking musical barriers.

Founded in 2006, Charanga Tropical performs with instrumentation that dates back to the roots of Cuban music featuring a sizzling Latin rhythm section, three violins, vocalists, and flute. The music is rich in harmony and melody, fantastic for listening and superb for dancing.

Jeremy Clyde, as half of Chad and Jeremy, burst through all barriers to success as part of the British Invasion. Eric Clapton has called Albert Lee “the ultimate virtuoso.” Early on, great American artists like Buddy Holly and The Everly Brothers influenced these two. Now, Lee and Clyde bring those influences to the fore in their first series of “storytellers” style acoustic duo shows.

For over four decades, people have recognized the Wooten Brothers as some of the most innovative musicians in existence. Further, they enjoy wide acknowledgment as one of the most talented and dynamic band of brothers the world has ever known. Thus, the brothers have always served as a musical tour-de-force, redefining the limits of jazz, funk, soul, R&B, rock and bluegrass. This tour will mark the brothers’ first time playing together since the untimely death of their saxophone-playing brother Rudy.

Not only that, but he’s a multi-instrumentalist, singer, songwriter, arranger and producer, as well. He fell in love with guitar first, starting at age five, performing by eleven and working as a musician by fourteen.

In the music of Charlie Parr, there is a sincere conviction and earnest drive to create. The Minnesota-born guitarist, songwriter and interpreter of traditional music has released nineteen albums over two decades. Also, he has been known to perform up to 275 shows a year. Parr is a folk troubadour in the truest sense: taking to the road between shows, writing and rewriting songs as he plays. Further, he is fueled by a belief that music is eternal and cannot be claimed or adequately explained. Additionally, the bluesman poet pulls closely from the sights and sounds around him, his lyrical craftsmanship built by his influences.

The show will celebrate Mama Cass, Tina Turner, Aretha Franklin, Cher, Lesley Gore, Grace Slick, Janis Joplin and Dionne Warwick. In addition, it will cover Joan Baez, Diana Ross, Barbra Streisand, Joni Mitchell, Bonnie Raitt and many more.

Sophia Shorai, a contemporary jazz vocalist and singer/songwriter, has been a mainstay on the Twin Cities music scene since 2004. Born in Bindura, Zimbabwe (hence, her middle name Shorai), she began classical piano and voice training at age five. She spent her early childhood mimicking the voices and instrumentation of jazz legends in her father’s record collection. Then, this gave rise to exploring the Golden Age of standards in her early teens.

Omar Abdulkarim has been playing the trumpet since he was fourteen months old. He holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Music Performance from the New School for Jazz and Contemporary Music. Omar has shared the stage with Roy Hargrove, Redman, Method Man, KRS-ONE and Talib Kweli. He has also performed with Nicholas Payton’s Television Studio Orchestra and Valerie Ponomarev’s Big Band.

Reflecting on their journey, the band finds themselves amidst a significant milestone—the release of their latest album. Just two years prior, Gillespie became the first musician to bring Latin influences into American jazz.
