Long time friends and chamber partners Alison Lee, piano, and William Cayanan, cello, from the Bay Area, but both with national and international repute, will present a program of “B’s and Beyond”, playing works by L. van Beethoven, J. Brahms, W. Bolcom, and more. The duo is excited to perform pieces spanning the long partnership of cello and piano chamber music.

The Vipisa Trio is a Violin, Piano, and Saxophone trio featuring faculty and staff from Cal Poly Humboldt: Virginia Ryder, saxophone; Cindy Moyer, violin; and John Chernoff, piano. Their program will include the most famous piece written for this instrumentation, Cantilène et danse by M. Eychenne, as well as new music composed for the Vipisa Trio by J. Chernoff and D. da Silva.

Transport yourself to exotic places with these underperformed masterworks that highlight the orchestra. Violinist Andrew Sords tackles Bruch’s Scottish Fantasy featuring virtuosic folk songs over the orchestra’s impressionistic landscape. Bendix contrasts lush melodies and contemplative moods, with fiery dances and driving rhythms in his masterful Symphony No. 3. Finally, watch the skill and artistry of the SOR orchestra in the exciting and celebratory Polovistian Dances! This rousing concert ends with an exciting flourish to our season and beyond!

Noyo Consort is Don Benham, and pianist Jason Kirkman, together with various guest musicians. This season Don and Jason are joined by Scott Macomber, trumpet, Meredith Brown, horn, and Sharon Lee Kim, piano, for a brass and piano extravaganza. Pieces for various combinations of the four instruments will complete what promises to be a captivating program.

Two masterpieces are featured in this concert by maverick composers. First, Poulenc’s Sinfonietta is a delightful and brilliant work of contrasts and beauty, with a musical language at once accessible yet uniquely Poulenc.
Beethoven’s “Emperor” concerto pushed the boundaries of the Classical concerto and influenced the style and form for centuries. This piece goes beyond the traditional feature of a soloist with orchestra accompaniment and becomes a musical statement of heroic achievement. Be sure to hear our conductor’s pre-concert lecture as he shares insights on how these works are truly maverick masterpieces.

With a program featuring classic and contemporary tango pieces, Link's virtuosic playing will take you on a journey to the heart of Buenos Aires, the birthplace of the tango. Her unique perspective and authentic interpretation of the music will leave you feeling inspired and moved.

Please join us for this free community event! Les Pfutzenreuter will conduct the chamber orchestra and the concert will feature four professional vocal soloists from Mendocino County and around the North Bay Area. Soloists include: Abigail Strock - soprano; Deborah Rosengaus - alto; Marius Constantin - tenor; and William O’Neill - bass.

The Polish-American pianist, acclaimed for his poetic sense of romantic music and moving performances, will present the works of F. Chopin and I. Paderewski as well as his own compositions. In his program, Dr. Binienda will present the historical background of F. Chopin’s works and discuss the impact of F. Chopin’s genius on the subsequent generations of musicians.

Acclaimed cellists Tanya Tomkins and Robert Howard join forces with guitarist/lutenist Richard Savino for a diverse exploration of this unique string trio. The program will explore the breadth of Baroque styles, from the intricacies of French ornamentation, through the stark contrast of the Italians, landing with the unrivaled structural mastery of J.S. Bach. Additional Works by M. Marais, E. Cervetto.

Robert Howard and Friends

The Sor Quartet will perform a program that travels the world, from Brazil to Azerbaijan, from Austria to the United States. Composers include V. Lobos and P. Glass among others. These are works will dig deep into memory and emotion, that will transport the listener to places far and near. The members of the Sor Quartet; Rick Shinozaki, Karen Shinozaki Sor, Elizabeth Prior, and Eugene Sor are based in the Bay Area and frequent chamber music performers on the Mendocino Coast.

Acclaimed Oboist and past soloist with the Symphony of the Redwoods, Laura Reynolds, will perform highlights of the oboe soloist repertoire with piano. After the intermission, she will be joined by friends and SOR musicians to perform Dvorak's Serenade for Wind Ensemble. This is a stunning work composed for 9 wind players, cello, and string bass. A grand finale to the Opus season!

The award-winning vocal ensemble Solstice has enthralled Bay Area audiences with their technically precise and passionate treatment of music for women’s voices since 1996. With a repertoire spanning centuries, crossing musical and geographical boundaries, Solstice shares the music they love and their joy in singing together in an intimate concert that makes use of the hall's wonderful acoustics.

Neave Trio, a well-known touring ensemble, that has visited Opus before, is now back on popular request. This time they will perform a program of pieces by Gabriela Lena Frank; Four Folk Songs, Frank Martin; Piano Trio of Irish Folk Songs and Bedrich Smetana; Piano Trio in G minor, among others. Their name ’Neave’ is actually a Gaelic name meaning ‘bright’ and ‘radiant,’ both of which certainly apply to this trio's music making. We are very much looking forward to another chance to host this outstanding piano-violin-cello trio.

Daniela Mineva will present pieces from the traditional piano repertoire including Beethoven's Rondo in C major, Messiaen's Three Preludes, solo transcription for the first movement of Schumann's piano concerto, and a new piece from the African- American Composers Margaret Bonds. Ms. Mineva will provide background and commentary on each piece and at the end of the concert, there will be a short question and answer session.

Paris, in the 1730s, was the place to be. The music of Bach, Couperin, Telemann and Rameau was heard in all the best salons. These composers knew each other’s music well but forged their own inimitable styles. The Paris Quartet, (harpsichord, viola da gamba, flute, and violin), based in the San Francisco Bay Area, has played the chamber music of Bach, Rameau, Telemann, Couperin, and occasionally other great composers since 2008. They love this stuff.

The instrumental combination of flute, viola, and piano creates a rich sonority that Santa Rosa Symphony Chamber Players, Kathleen Reynolds, Alex Volonts, and Kymry Esainko explore fully. Featured composers include Durufle´, Bloch, CPE Bach, and others. Ms. Reynolds is the principal flutist with Symphony of the Redwoods and Santa Rosa Symphony. Ms Reynolds is also the featured soloist with Symphony of the Redwoods in the orchestra's November concert.

Brass Over Bridges will perform brass favorites ranging from the Renaissance polyphony of Giovanni Gabrieli to the jazz of Duke Ellington. Committed to finding new and exciting pieces for the brass quintet, they will also perform three selections by celebrated contemporary composers. Based in the San Francisco Bay Area, Brass over Bridges gets inspiration from cultural diversity and seeks to engage audiences by bridging barriers of style and artistic discipline. It’s all about connection through building bridges, something we all can relate to very well!

Cellist extraordinaire Joel Cohen and Friends will perform an engaging program of works for piano quintet and larger string ensemble. Among the pieces featured for this concert will be Dvorak’s piano quintet in A major and Bloch’s Concerto Grosso #1 for 10 players! This will be a rare opportunity to hear Mendocino Coast’s top-string players in perfect unison resonate in Preston Hall.
