For more than 400 years, the Black American spiritual tradition has moved over, across, and through the waters—waters of life force, passage, cleansing, resistance, and renewal—depicted in such songs and verses as “Wade in the Water,” “Deep River,” “Crossing Jordan,” and “By the Waters of Babylon.”

The power of water and its spiritual dimensions equally resonates in the beautiful, sacred texts of Bach’s cantatas. Infused with poetry, Bach’s music sounds and speaks to every drop of water, in drought and in full flood, moving and alive.

Between 1910 and 1940, many Chinese immigrants flowed through the immigration station on Angel Island inside San Francisco Bay, facing mass discrimination under the Chinese Exclusion Act of 1882, with few exceptions. With music by acclaimed Chinese-American composer Huang Ruo, Angel Island revisits this chapter of American history with a poignant multimedia experience scored for voices and a string quartet that blurs the boundaries of opera, theater, dance, and music. Huang Ruo, along with director Matthew Ozawa, weaves a powerful requiem from the century-old poetry engraved on the detention center’s walls by some of the hundreds of thousands of incarcerated Chinese immigrants. Angel Island arrives amid an ongoing epidemic of brutal violence and rampant discrimination against immigrants, asylum-seekers, and Asians across the diaspora. This production is a stirring plea for care and empathy as well as a visceral, clear-eyed tribute to the rebellion and resilience of those who passed through and perished at Angel Island.

This chamber music arrangement—specially written for AMOC*—was first performed at The Met Cloisters in 2018 in the beautiful San Martín at Fuentidueña chapel. The New York Times called it “intimate, affecting and quietly rich with activism.” The piece, which celebrates Latin American poets and the voices of women, returns for a one-night-only engagement this holiday season at a different New York City landmark.

Orchestra of St. Luke’s and conductor Harry Bicket kick off the 2022–2023 season at Carnegie Hall with the continuation of a multi-season focus on the works of Felix Mendelssohn. The concert begins with the breathless excitement of his Piano Concerto No. 1, a brisk and impactful work bookended by musical fireworks courtesy of pianist Benjamin Grosvenor. Also featured on the program is the incidental music Mendelssohn wrote for A Midsummer Night’s Dream, a fantastical and evocative rendering with vocal parts that are beautifully suited for soprano Elena Villalón and mezzo-soprano Cecelia Hall, with narration by David Hyde Pierce and featuring The Choir of Trinity Wall Street.

Carnegie Hall

The Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra is thrilled to announce a return to Carnegie Hall on Monday, October 3 at 7pm for a program celebrating the life and works of one of the most important composers of the last century, former BPO Music Director Lukas Foss! The admission-free concert is offered as a gift to the community by Trinity Church. BPO Music Director JoAnn Falletta will lead the program, featuring the Choir of Trinity Wall Street and Downtown Voices, along with soloists Amy Porter, flute and BPO Concertmaster Nikki Chooi, violin.
