Introducing Nottingham Symphony Orchestra's new Music Director Mark Prescott, and acclaimed pianist Simon Callaghan, NSO starts the 2024-25 concert season with a Programme of Favourites - Old & New.

A Concert of Favourites - Old & New

Upon Graduation in 1994, he took up the post of Assistant Organist at Southwell Minster and co-founded the Southwell Minster Chorale. For eight years he directed the Chorale in Southwell and further afield. Active as a recitalist, he has performed throughout the United Kingdom, in many cathedrals and concert halls, including Westminster Cathedral, St Paul’s Cathedral, and King’s College, Cambridge. In September 2000 he was a finalist in the prestigious Royal College of Organists’ Performer of the Year award, performing with the BBC Philharmonic Orchestra and Rumon Gamba. He won many recital awards, including performances at St John’s, Smith Square and at the Dublin International Organ and Choral Festival.

Simon Lawford received his early musical training as a chorister at St Paul’s Cathedral, and was organ scholar at Magdalen College, Oxford, under Dr Bernard Rose. He was Assistant Organist at Peterborough Cathedral and Christ Church, Oxford.

We open our 2024/25 season with a semi-staged concert performance of one of the world's most loved operas. Puccini's Tosca is a tragic story of passion and jealousy. It tells the story of the tempestuous opera singer Floria Tosca, as she fights to save her lover Cavaradossi from the sadistic police chief Scarpia.

Expect to hear the music of Frank Sinatra, Ella Fitzgerald, Judy Garland, Nat ‘King’ Cole, Peggy Lee and many more brought back to life by some of the UK’s top jazz musicians and arrangers. The orchestra preserve and protect the musical heritage of these great artists - but this is no mere nostalgia trip, as Down for the Count perform each song in their own unmistakeable style, breathing new life into the best vintage music.
