Canadian-born violinist Lara St. John has been described as "something of a phenomenon" by The Strad and a “high-powered soloist” by The New York Times.

She performs solo violin pieces composed by 12 leading composers, including Laurie Anderson, Valerie Coleman, Gabriela Lena Frank, and more.

Turkish pianist Fazıl Say has been touching audiences and critics alike with his extraordinary talents for more than 25 years. He is not simply a pianist of genius, but also a master composer and improviser. He will perform his own works for solo piano, voice, and chamber ensemble with Turkish-Canadian mezzo-soprano Beste Kalender, Lara and Scott St. John (violins), Barry Shiffman (viola), and Winona Zelenka (cello).

The RSO opens the season with Lili Boulanger’s vibrant D’un matin de printemps (On a Spring Morning), depicting the start of a new day. The “high-powered soloist” (New York Times), Lara St. John performs Chausson’s darkly mournful Poème and Ravel’s rhapsodic Tzigane. Debussy’s Nocturnes have been celebrated for their ability to evoke imagery, light, and color. Ravel vividly interprets the ancient Greek myth of Daphnis and Chloé, originally scored for a ballet. As an orchestral work, the Suite No. 2 dazzles with its whirling intensity.

Opening Night is a special occasion for celebration, especially after an enforced absence, and so I’ve chosen one of the most glorious symphonies to crown an evening of reconnection with you, our beloved audience.</p>
<p>The first half is a different kind of celebration of the beautiful diversity of the Americas—the<br>
<cite>Festive Overture</cite> by the dean of African-American composers, William Grant Still, followed by Canadian violinist Lara St. John performing Astor Piazzolla’s <cite>Four Seasons of Buenos Aires</cite> uniting the Argentine tango with Vivaldi’s treatment of the same subject.
