For more than 50 years, music lovers have flocked to Carnegie Hall for the chance to hear Emanuel Ax in recital. In this performance, he treats listeners to musical fantasies by Beethoven, Robert Schumann, and more. Beethoven’s experimental pair of Op. 27 sonatas includes what is most popularly known as the “Moonlight” Sonata—but both pieces were originally marked “Sonata quasi una fantasia” by the composer. Between these sonatas, Ax performs John Corigliano’s Fantasia on an Ostinato, an explorative piece based on an unusual passage from Beethoven’s Seventh Symphony. The program’s second half comprises works by Robert Schumann, including the ever-popular Arabeske in C Major and the Fantasy in C Major—dedicated to fellow virtuoso Franz Liszt—which is one of the Romantic repertoire’s most demanding masterpieces, featuring a movement the composer professed as being “the most passionate I have ever composed.”

Her favorite playwright tries to lift her spirits with an opera featuring the beloved characters from Rossini’s The Barber of Seville and Mozart’s The Marriage of Figaro. Shostakovich’s Fifth journeys from haunting depths to its famously ambiguous finale. Saxophone virtuoso Timothy McAllister is the soloist in John Corigliano’s Triathlon, which was written for him. With movements centered on soprano, alto, and baritone saxophones, the piece requires — in the composer’s words — “three feats of high athletic prowess.” Cindy McTee’s Double Play is inspired by mid-20th-century big-band jazz.

From Corigliano, “This a capella choral work, composed in 1971, is a setting of Richard Wilbur’s translation of Baudelaire’s L’Invitation au Voyage. Wilbur’s poignant setting pictures a world of obsessive imagination — a drugged vision of heaven full of sensual imagery. The music echoes the quality of the repeated refrain found in this lush translation: ‘There, there is nothing else but grace and measure, richness, quietness and pleasure.’”

In a Columbus Symphony co-commission, cellist Sterling Elliott performs famed composer John Corigliano’s Phantasmagoria for solo cello and orchestra. Rossen leads the orchestra in Beethoven’s sweeping third symphony, the ‘Eroica,’ or “Heroic” Symphony, written in a time of great personal despair for Beethoven as he faced the loss of his hearing while still resolving to push the boundaries of the symphonic genre.

After visiting a friend’s posthumous art exhibit, Mussorgsky exclaimed “Ideas, melodies, come to me of their own accord.” He penned Pictures at an Exhibition with a feverish intensity, and the result is a work that showcases the virtuosity found within the orchestra. Sasha Cooke joins us for One Sweet Morning, John Corigliano’s achingly beautiful song cycle written to commemorate the tenth anniversary of 9/11.

Reflections on a legendary story. The 1720 Red Mendelssohn Stradivarius violin is said to be one of the world’s most legendary instruments. Its mysterious history and whereabouts after it went missing for 200 years, has inspired much speculation, and many tellings of its story, including the 1998, Academy Award winning film, The Red Violin. And the story of how it came into the hands of its current owner? It’s just as fascinating. Join us for a performance by world-renowned violin virtuoso, and longtime keeper of The Red Violin, Elizabeth Pitcairn, who, along with her legendary instrument, will lead the ASO Chamber Ensemble in performing captivating arrangements from the now famous movie. This concert will double both as the Season 39 finale, as well as the premiere for ASO’s first-ever international debut, a 10-day concert tour of Poland, where the Symphony will travel with Pitcairn and her Red Violin, performing at some of the country’s most prestigious concert halls and music festivals.

Ravel’s homage-with-a-twist to Johann Strauss, Jr. imagines a mid-19th century imperial court with couples dancing and whirling in a voluptuous waltz that ends in a wild, shattering climax. Cellist Sterling Elliott–whose stellar stage presence and joy in music-making—solos in John Corigliano’s Phantasmagoria, a sort of “phantasy” on his opera Ghosts of Versailles, arranged for him by the composer. Rachmaninoff’s kaleidoscopic Symphonic Dances, his last—and many say his greatest—work, includes a haunting alto saxophone, mysterious tubular bells, allusions to Russian Orthodox chants, a thundering Dies irae from the Mass for the Dead, and a shadowy, eerie waltz that seems to echo the darker harmonies of La valse that opens our concert.

Featuring GRAMMY® Award-winning countertenor Anthony Roth Costanzo as the supernatural Dionysus-cum-Dracula, Lord of Cries reimagines timeless themes for contemporary audiences.

John Corigliano long resisted writing a symphony, seeing it as a form that served a composer’s ego over the audience and performers. At the height of the AIDS crisis, Corigiliano overcame that hesitation and wrote his Symphony No. 1 as a way to memorialize friends lost to the epidemic. Though he was a member of the so-called “Silent Generation,” Corigliano’s symphony served as influential composition for those coming of age in symphonic circles when it premiered in 1990. In this Gen X program curated by Thomas Adès, the milestone Symphony No. 1 is paired with music by Andrew Norman and Jonathan Bailey Holland.

Impressive, athletic – and so vivid that individual scenes of our antics will be clearly recognizable: We are looking forward to performing a few lighthearted musical recreations under the direction of Robert Treviño. We will be playing a musical team game composed by Charles Ives, and our audience can look forward to seeing how this "Football Game," complete with woven-in fan chants and a referee's whistle to ensure fair play, unfolds. The composer himself described the piece as a "caricature in two two-minute halves" and added: "Funny to listen to – but difficult to play!" Impressive, athletic – and so vivid that individual scenes of our antics will be clearly recognizable: We are looking forward to performing a few lighthearted musical recreations under the direction of Robert Treviño. We will be playing a musical team game composed by Charles Ives, and our audience can look forward to seeing how this "Football Game," complete with woven-in fan chants and a referee's whistle to ensure fair play, unfolds.

Known for his bold programming and artistic vision, Artistic Director finalist Michael Lewanski leads a powerful and eclectic program that bridges cultures, eras, and emotions. The evening begins with Carlos Chávez’s energetic Sinfonia India, followed by Jessie Montgomery’s luminous Hymn for Everyone. Acclaimed violinist MingHuan Xu takes center stage in John Corigliano’s haunting Red Violin Chaconne, a work of cinematic beauty and emotional depth. The concert concludes with the striking wit and youthful brilliance of Shostakovich’s Symphony No. 1—a landmark debut from one of the 20th century’s most iconic voices.
