We meet the writer Agnes von Krusenstjerna, the artist Sigrid Hjertén and the poet Nelly Sachs and are taken on a journey through their artistry, life and illness. How were these women able to take power over their situation, against the world and institutions, and still maintain their creativity?

What do we learn from the witnesses of war?
They were pilots, tank drivers, scouts and snipers – the women who fought in the Red Army, side by side with the men. But unlike the men, after the war they were not seen as heroes, but were met with suspicion and often with contempt.
So they kept quiet. Until Svetlana Alexievich, forty years later, began to seek them out in factories and homes and asked them to tell their stories.
