What do we learn from the witnesses of war? They were pilots, tank drivers, scouts and snipers – the women who fought in the Red Army, side by side with the men. But unlike the men, after the war they were not seen as heroes, but were met with suspicion and often with contempt. So they kept quiet. Until Svetlana Alexievich, forty years later, began to seek them out in factories and homes and asked them to tell their stories.
