The New York-born Mexican conductor Alondra de la Parra has created a cultural beacon with the Paax GNP festival on the Caribbean coast of Yucatán. The aim is to celebrate the diversity of Mexican music and to anchor the country's rich music scene more firmly in the international consciousness. This is an aim that is also reflected in the program for the 7th Philharmonic Concert, which also draws cultural links to the former colonial power Spain. The 1939 film "La noche de los mayas" is about a Mayan tribe and its encounter with the "modern" world, for which Silvestre Revueltas composed rhythmic-dynamic music. And rhythm also plays a central role in Maurice Ravel's "Rapsodie espagnole", the movements of which have various Spanish dances in their titles, including the famous Habanera, while Manuel de Falla creates an impressionistic mood picture of "Nights in Spanish Gardens" with folkloristic elements and Andalusian dances. Also taking part is the jazz pianist and composer Thomas Enhco, a festival companion of Alondra de la Parra and Duisburg debutant. Jazz influences and Enhco's experience with film music can be heard in the "Rhapsody for Piano and Orchestra".

This year marks the tenth anniversary of the death of legendary guitarist Paco de Lucía. This concert pays tribute, featuring a piece that became one of his most iconic recordings: Joaquín Rodrigo’s El Concierto de Aranjuez. There’s music by eminent Spanish composers including Manuel de Falla, Isaac Albéniz and Francisco Tarrega, as well as music that takes inspiration from Spanish culture, including an aria from Georges Bizet’s opera Carmen and the overture to Gioacchino Rossini’s The Barber of Seville.

In celebration of the Frost School of Music’s centennial, Frost professor Etienne Charles writes a new work for the orchestra. Having recently had one of his compositions premiere at the opening concert of the newly renovated David Geffen Hall at Lincoln Center, you will not want to miss it! The concert concludes with Gustav Mahler’s "Totenfeier," which later became part of his Second Symphony.

A ceremonial, elegant dance is hidden behind the name Pavane, derived from the Spanish word for peacock. Ravel's "Pavane pour une infante défunte" has become particularly famous, and the Celli Family plays it in a version for eight cellos. In addition to this elegiac, dreamy composition, the program also includes works and arrangements of a different kind. A morning full of wonderful cello sounds - the perfect start to an exciting and relaxed Sunday!

A trio of influencers had hands in creating the Three-Cornered Hat — the impresario Sergei Deaghilev, Pablo Picasso and composer Manuel de Falla. De Falla’s ballet score stands apart, setting a lighthearted story (a love triangle) to dances full to the brim with Spanish flair and castanets. Gabriela Ortiz’s Téenek transcends place and time, and pianist Francesco Piemontesi joins the CSO for Beethoven’s gentle and poetic Piano Concerto No. 4

In addition, we are looking forward to two solo works: the beautiful Romance No. 2 by Beethoven and the devilishly difficult Polonaise de Concert by Wieniawski. No piece of music is more closely associated with Spain worldwide than Georges Bizet's opera "Carmen", to which the suites with the "Toréadors" song and "Habanera" arranged posthumously by Ernest Guiraud contributed significantly. The Frenchman Bizet proved that he was also able to capture Provençal flair in his incidental music "L'Arlesienne", from which Guiraud also created a suite. While this and the "Carmen" Suite No. 1 frame the concert, the focus is on two masterpieces by Spanish composers: Joaquín Rodrigo's "Concierto", inspired by the palace gardens in Aranjuez, a jewel of classical guitar music from 1940, and Manuel de Falla's 1st Suite from the ballet music "El sombrero de tres picos", which premiered in 1919 and whose subject matter and sound world have contributed significantly to the identity of Spanish classical music.

One of the world’s leading young pianists, she has taken top prizes at the Rubinstein and Moscow International Frederick Chopin Competitions and has been mentored by world-renowned musicians Alfred Brendel and András Schiff. Fedorova has performed with esteemed orchestras in prestigious concert halls and music festivals of Europe, North and South America, and Asia.

»As artists, we can show our love with music.« These words were spoken by Sir Simon Rattle – and our audience is in for a treat as the collaboration between the top Bavarian orchestras continues. This time the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra will be conducted in our concert hall by its new Chief Conductor, whose personal style is characterised by charisma and complete humanity – and who likens a harmonious relationship between conductor and orchestra to a good marriage. With our Munich colleagues, it was certainly love at first sight. In this concert by the Bavarian ensemble, the Bamberg audience is treated to a programme of Sir Simon Rattle’s choice. The evening will commence with the overture to "L’amant anonyme," op. 11 no. 2 by Joseph Bologne, a contemporary of Mozart and a pioneering black composer whose work has recently been celebrated for its charm and historical significance. Following this, violinist Stephen Waarts, acclaimed for his performance of the Khachaturian Violin Concerto in 2019, will take the stage to perform Mozart’s elegant and enchanting Violin Concerto No. 3 in G major, K. 216, Strassburg.

Adding to the evening’s allure, soprano Julia Bullock, honored by Musical America as a 2021 Artist of the Year: Agent of Change, will transport the audience to India with her rendition of DeLage’s song cycle "Quatre poèmes hindous," inspired by the composer’s travels. The concert will conclude with Haydn’s Symphony No. 82 in C major, Hob. I/82, "The Bear," a piece known for its vivacity and harmonic ingenuity, which earned Haydn the reputation of a compositional rock star across Europe.

Acclaimed by the Minneapolis Star-Tribune “as a performer of scintillating energy and imagination…with a fearless, fiery quality,” Aspen alumna Joyce Yang returns for Falla’s Night in the Gardens of Spain. Not quite a piano concerto, the piece can be seen as musical tribute to the composer’s beloved Andalusia. You’ll hear influences of flamenco, guitar, and in Falla’s words, “melancholy and mystery.” The concert begins with a short prayer and “serenade to the past” by Gabriela Lena Frank, inspired by the composer’s visit with her mother to the site in Peru where the Spanish defeated the Inca Empire.

Manuel de Falla’s gorgeously orchestrated Nights in the Gardens of Spain featuring the debut of young Mexican pianist Rachid Bernal will immerse us in Spanish Impressionism. Silvestre Revueltas is one of the giants among Mexican composers, and I am very excited to introduce to you his suite from the movie La Noche de Los Mayas, featuring a multimedia presentation of Mayan art. And finally, a great mariachi ensemble Mariachi Los Camperos will play selections of Mexican songs with the Madison Symphony. A truly unique concert designed to lift your spirits and bring my 30th anniversary celebration to a rousing and joyful finale.

The music of Spain features evocative compositions from Manuel de Falla, Joaquín Rodrigo and Maurice Ravel. De Falla’s Ritual Fire Dance is a movement of the ballet El amor brujo utilizes fast, repetitive trills and ornamentations, with the oboe introducing the dance’s twists and turns. Aranjuez Concerto for classical guitar by Joaquín Rodrigo was inspired by the Royal Palace of Aranjuez, transporting the listener to another place and time. Ravel’s Rhapsodia Espagniola, Alborada del gracioso, and Pavane for a Dead Princess showcase numerous elements of Spanish music inspired by the composer’s heritage.

Fiesta season comes early with the welcome return of James Ehnes, one of the world’s finest violinists. At the heart of this programme is Saint-Saëns' impassioned Third Violin Concerto. It’s a classic, written for the virtuoso Pablo de Sarasate, who wasn’t averse to writing the odd tune for his own instrument either. In Sarasate’s hands, the violin becomes Carmen, the exotic figure who beguiled toreadors and composers alike. Manuel de Falla keeps things smouldering with The Three-Cornered Hat. It’s a tale worthy of El Dorado (the lost golden city and the BBC soap), infused with Andalusian folk music and the dance rhythms of flamenco and the fandango. On the podium, Juanjo Mena returns to keep things in order in a programme with sun-kissed music by Ravel and Berlioz.

The Spanish conductor-composer Francisco Coll makes his debut with the BBC Symphony Orchestra, conducting two of his own works. Aqua Cinerea – the title means evoking ash-grey water or perhaps even the image of ash falling as rain – is his magical first orchestral work written in 2005 when Coll was 19. Hímnica (2020) is a kind of passacaglia, or chaconne, in which a hymnic theme develops in different ways within one slow tempo.

Passions run high in our third Masterworks. Music from, and about, Spain frame a virtuoso tango-inflected violin concerto from Argentina. We open with excerpts from Bizet’s Carmen— including the indelible Seguedille and Toréadors. Though French, Bizet brilliantly captures the swagger and ardor of the Iberian spirit. Spaniard Manuel de Falla’s energized, colorful ballet score, written for Diaghilev’s Ballet Russes (of Rite of Spring fame), overflowing with drama, high spirits, and, of course, castanets, occupies the second half. In between Astor Piazzolla’s homage to Vivaldi fuses classical forms with the passions of tango.

An exciting clash occurs when different traditions and forms of expression, the classical with the completely modern, the historical with the present, the young dancers and the established state ensemble, meet.

Curiously, it’s often been French composers who’ve expressed Spain’s essence, as in Chabrier’s España, inspired by folk musicians he heard there on holiday. Bizet showed similar flair in his opera, Carmen, the colourful Suite No.1 concluding with the famous Toreadors’ March. But to capture the country’s soul, turn to a Spaniard: Rodrigo’s Concierto de Aranjuez, performed by an always welcome Hallé guest, guitarist Craig Ogden.

Alessio Bax’s exceptional lyricism and consummate technique led him to capture First Prize at both the Leeds and Hamamatsu International Piano Competitions and catapulted him to prominence. He is now a familiar face on five continents, not only as a recitalist and chamber musician, but also as a concerto soloist who has appeared with more than 150 orchestras, including the London, Royal, and St. Petersburg Philharmonic Orchestras, the New York, Boston, Dallas, Cincinnati, Sydney, and City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestras, and the NHK Symphony in Japan.

Following last year’s Central Oregon Chamber Orchestra performance of Louise Farrenc’s Symphony No. 3, we are pleased to perform another work by this fantastic nineteenth century French composer, her Concert Overture No. 2. Jumping across the border to Spain, and forward three-quarters of a century, we will hear the soulful strains and driving rhythms of Spanish dance music drawn from Manuel de Falla’s ballet The Three-Cornered Hat. Additionally, the winners of the Central Oregon Symphony Association Young Artist Competition will be featured in this concert. Winners and repertoire will be announced in December 2023.
