Two compelling works from contrasting worlds: With lightness, elegance and wit, infused with Spanish rhythms, Manuel de Falla’s ballet The Three-Cornered Hat tells of a young wife who fends off the advances of a provincial governor. Leoš Janáček’s rhapsody Taras Bulba, by contrast, unfolds with elemental power, portraying the fate of a Ukrainian Cossack leader who loses first his two sons and then his own life in the struggle against Polish occupiers. Sir Simon Rattle, former Chief Conductor of the Berliner Philharmoniker, also leads the world premiere of a concerto written by Cathy Milliken for our cor anglais player, Dominik Wollenweber.

This will be a great joy, as we'll be igniting four sonic fireworks. Our energy will be further fueled by two Spaniards – the conductor Roberto González-Monjas and the pianist Javier Perianes. We'll begin with a humorous role-playing exercise: Manuel de Falla's ballet "El sombrero de tres picos" ("The Three-Cornered Hat") from 1919 is set in a small Andalusian town – and for this turbulent comedy of errors, we can create witty onomatopoeia and lively dances. Equally atmospheric is his piece "Nights in Spanish Gardens," completed in 1916: enchanting impressions for piano and orchestra with which the composer wanted to "evoke places, moods, and feelings." This also resonates with Debussy, who preferred to listen to the wind for his music, "which tells us the story of this world" – and who even initially wanted to become a sailor.

Our first visit from a Spanish orchestra in many a year brings this exciting young ensemble from the port city of A Coruña. They’re joined by Thibaut Garcia, who’s been hailed as ‘the new face of classical guitar’ after winning every major international guitar competition within the space of just a few months. His performance of Rodrigo’s evergreen Concierto de Aranjuez – so popular that it’s been recorded over a hundred times – is the centrepiece of a richly varied programme from Spain and France.

A rhythm, a flute, and a melody you’ll never forget… it’s hard to say what exactly makes Ravel’s Boléro so irresistible. But this French composer had Spanish blood, and tonight’s concert is filled with the sunshine, the fragrance and the pure, intoxicating passion of Spain at its most seductive. Wild, whirling dances from Falla and Turina, delicate fairy tales from Ravel – it’s a fiesta in sound, even before Boléro strikes up that unstoppable beat.

But we couldn’t spend a night in Spain without hearing the classical guitar, and tonight the Coruña-based Spanish Galicia Symphony Orchestra is joined by dazzling young French guitarist Thibaut Garcia in that most Spanish of all guitar concertos: Rodrigo’s haunting and much-loved Concierto de Aranjuez.

Joaquín Rodrigo’s Concierto de Aranjuez is an icon in Spanish music, and surely the greatest guitar concerto ever written. It’s the centrepiece of a programme that also transports us to Andalucia with works by Joaquín Turina and Manuel de Falla. And then we’re in the company of Maurice Ravel, born to a Basque mother by the Spanish border, with two of his most enchanting pieces: the Mother Goose suite and the indelible Boléro.

Rivers and landscapes shape the course of this programme, which has its source in Spain and flows to Bohemia. Turia is named after the Spanish river that meets the Mediterranean near Valencia, and the solo guitar shimmers and sparkles like sun on the water. From here we move further east and join another river, the Vltava, as it wends its way through Smetana’s beautiful musical depiction of his Bohemian homeland.

Joining him on stage is the Amsterdam Andalusian Orchestra, which specializes in the distinctive folk music from Andalusia, which is so closely connected to the Arab musical tradition.

Sometimes gently swaying, sometimes wildly stomping – this is how the successive waltzes in Carl Maria von Weber's "Invitation to the Dance" sound. With this piece, originally composed for piano, Weber created a depiction of the intoxicating love of dance of his time in 1819. The Spanish composer Manuel de Falla – the music world will celebrate his 150th birthday in 2026 – was so fascinated by a performance of the "Ballets Russes" in Paris that he wanted to create music for a ballet himself. Inspired by the dancer Pastore Imperio from his homeland, de Falla studied the tradition of Andalusian flamenco and the singing style of "cante jondo" and, on this basis, wrote the ballet "El amor brujo" (The Love Spell) for voice and orchestra in the winter of 1914/15, from which he transformed a year later into a symphonic suite with voice. The solo part is played by Ieva Prudnikovaite, who is currently delighting audiences as Carmen at the Lübeck Theater.

A disciple of Alicia de Larrocha and Daniel Barenboim, the great Spanish pianist Javier Perianes returns to Liège for a program largely dedicated to Spain, at the initiative of EUROPALIA. First, he brings together Falla's early pieces with works by Chopin that seem to have inspired them. Second, he brings together Falla's Four Spanish Pieces , premiered in Paris in 1908, with four excerpts from Albéniz's formidable collection Iberia , an absolute masterpiece of piano literature whose colors and exuberance constitute a formidable homage to his native country.

The opera tells the story of Salud, a gypsy girl who is passionately in love with a wealthy man named Paco. He is engaged to be married to someone else and has kept this secret from her. Once the truth is known, Salud and her uncle crash the wedding party and confront the man and his new bride. Paco rejects Salud and in grand opera fashion, she dies of broken heart and collapses at his feet. We promise, the Spanish Dance No. 1 his a happy rollicking  event that will absolutely please your ears.

Piano virtuoso Javier Perianes, praised by Gramophone for his “infallible ear for style, atmosphere and colour” returns to perform Nights in the Gardens of Spain, evoking Falla’s beloved Andalusia with its mysterious, fragrant beauty, strumming guitars, flamenco rhythms and dancing melodies. Our rich, Spanish-flavored concert culminates in Rapsodie Espagnole, Ravel’s orchestral masterpiece, showing him as a master of instrumental color. Its four sections are vivid echoes of the sounds and dances of Spain, and its final movement, the sultry “Feria” (“The Fair”), punctuated by castanets, is ablaze in a riot of colors. In between, it’s the zesty suite from The Three-Cornered Hat, replete with sounds of stamping feet, timpani drumming and castanets clicking out infectious rhythms.

Spain – that sounds like summer, sun, and sea. And music. KiKA presenter Juri Tetzlaff takes you on a journey to the land of flamenco, playful melodies, and spirited rhythms. Like a musical tapas bar, we serve you the most delicious sounds from Spain's regions: burning passion with Falla's fire dance, as well as vibrant city portraits and enchanting landscapes with Albéniz's "Suite española."

Composed during a vacation in Cairo, Saint-Saëns’s crowd-pleasing Piano Concerto No. 5, Egyptian runs the gamut from delicate grace to powerhouse virtuosity. Beloved for his captivating mix of dramatic flair and tour-de-force brilliance, Jean-Yves Thibaudet will leave you spellbound. And, castanets click, fiery flamenco rhythms blaze, and sensuous sonic colors saturate the stage in a rare complete performance of Manuel de Falla’s exuberant The Three-Cornered Hat.
