Just in time for Valentine’s Day, the Dearborn Symphony invites you to an evening of music made for falling in love—with rhythm, with movement, and maybe even with each other. Shall We Dance is a romantic, high-spirited night out designed for couples, friends, and anyone looking to celebrate the joy of connection through music and motion.

The concert itself flows with the charm and energy of a night on the town. Liszt’s Mephisto Waltz brings smoldering passion and drama, while Strauss’s Voices of Spring waltz enchants with its elegance—performed live with dancers from Downriver Dance Academy, under the artistic direction of Genrich. Later, tango-inspired rhythms and Latin flair take center stage in Piazzolla’s Libertango, performed in collaboration with the Dearborn Youth Symphony, adding a fresh, youthful spark to the evening.

A disciple of Alicia de Larrocha and Daniel Barenboim, the great Spanish pianist Javier Perianes returns to Liège for a program largely dedicated to Spain, at the initiative of EUROPALIA. First, he brings together Falla's early pieces with works by Chopin that seem to have inspired them. Second, he brings together Falla's Four Spanish Pieces , premiered in Paris in 1908, with four excerpts from Albéniz's formidable collection Iberia , an absolute masterpiece of piano literature whose colors and exuberance constitute a formidable homage to his native country.

This unparalleled concert event starts with Spanish Dance No. 1 by de Falla from his opera, La vida breve or "Life is Short". The opera tells the story of Salud, a gypsy girl who is passionately in love with a wealthy man named Paco. He is engaged to be married to someone else and has kept this secret from her. Once the truth is known, Salud and her uncle crash the wedding party and confront the man and his new bride. Paco rejects Salud and in grand opera fashion, she dies of broken heart and collapses at his feet. We promise, the Spanish Dance No. 1 his a happy rollicking  event that will absolutely please your ears.

Between his performances of The Well-Tempered Clavier, this season’s curator Mahan Esfahani will make room to honour his reputation as a bold musical explorer. The evening’s climax will be Falla’s Harpsichord Concerto, interpreted by some of the Czech Republic’s finest musicians.

As tradition dictates, the Antwerp Symphony Orchestra rings in the New Year with a musical journey to Vienna. For 2026, the celebration begins in Spain, with guitarist Juan Manuel Cañizares performing Joaquín Rodrigo’s melancholic Concierto de Aranjuez, a jewel of the classical guitar repertoire. Manuel de Falla’s vibrant Spanish folk dances follow, setting the stage for a Viennese festivity. Then the Viennese party really erupts, because waltzes and polkas and Johann Strauss Jr.: this belongs to New Year as much as fireworks and bubbles!

Piano virtuoso Javier Perianes, praised by Gramophone for his “infallible ear for style, atmosphere and colour” returns to perform Nights in the Gardens of Spain, evoking Falla’s beloved Andalusia with its mysterious, fragrant beauty, strumming guitars, flamenco rhythms and dancing melodies. Our rich, Spanish-flavored concert culminates in Rapsodie Espagnole, Ravel’s orchestral masterpiece, showing him as a master of instrumental color. Its four sections are vivid echoes of the sounds and dances of Spain, and its final movement, the sultry “Feria” (“The Fair”), punctuated by castanets, is ablaze in a riot of colors. In between, it’s the zesty suite from The Three-Cornered Hat, replete with sounds of stamping feet, timpani drumming and castanets clicking out infectious rhythms.

Where the emperor once strolled, we are preparing the large Kurpark stage for an evening with Spanish flair: In a beautiful atmosphere, tenor Rolando Villazón and mezzo-soprano Gaëlle Arquez, together with the Orquesta de la Comunidad de Madrid under the direction of Mexican conductor Alondra de la Parra, will present a classical night with a Spanish repertoire that can only be experienced in this form here. Of course, works by Manuel de Falla and parts from Georges Bizet's "Carmen" will be included – a dazzling work that has lost none of its popularity and expressive diversity to this day. But singing isn't the only thing that plays a role this evening: with Spanish orchestral works, the Orquesta de la Comunidad de Madrid will demonstrate all of its talent and transport the audience to Southern Europe with its sounds. The organ is known as the king of instruments for a reason. Its sound is sublime, sometimes even out of this world. All the stops will be pulled out – literally! – when the Kulturpalast’s own organist Olivier Latry joins his wife Shin-Young Lee at the keyboard. The duo will coax unforgettable sounds from the organ at the main auditorium of the Kulturpalast, which boasts 4,109 pipes and a sound to rival its visual impressiveness. The program awaiting the audience is highly intriguing, as it features works not originally written for organ, but of such polyphony and orchestral colorfulness that they unfold an effect all their own on this grand instrument. They include »Le Sacre du printemps« by Igor Stravinsky and the famous »Lever du jour« from Maurice Ravel’s »Daphnis et Chloé«.

British pianist Harriet Cohen (1895-1967) enjoyed a celebrated career as a classical concert pianist and was described by Albert Einstein as “The Beloved Piano-Witch”. She was a magnetic woman and intimate friend and lover to multiple luminaries of her era. This lecture-performance will provide informative commentary about her illustrious life, interwoven with performance of piano music by composers she championed, including JS Bach, Arnold Bax, Chopin, de Falla, and Bartók.

The New York-born Mexican conductor Alondra de la Parra has created a cultural beacon with the Paax GNP festival on the Caribbean coast of Yucatán. The aim is to celebrate the diversity of Mexican music and to anchor the country's rich music scene more firmly in the international consciousness. This is an aim that is also reflected in the program for the 7th Philharmonic Concert, which also draws cultural links to the former colonial power Spain. The 1939 film "La noche de los mayas" is about a Mayan tribe and its encounter with the "modern" world, for which Silvestre Revueltas composed rhythmic-dynamic music. And rhythm also plays a central role in Maurice Ravel's "Rapsodie espagnole", the movements of which have various Spanish dances in their titles, including the famous Habanera, while Manuel de Falla creates an impressionistic mood picture of "Nights in Spanish Gardens" with folkloristic elements and Andalusian dances. Also taking part is the jazz pianist and composer Thomas Enhco, a festival companion of Alondra de la Parra and Duisburg debutant. Jazz influences and Enhco's experience with film music can be heard in the "Rhapsody for Piano and Orchestra".
