A few highlights have been selected from the heyday of symphonic music, which together form an anthology of the best that orchestral literature has to offer. From the enchanting Morgenstimmung by Grieg and Pavane by Fauré, to the Spanish fire of De Falla's Danza Ritual del Fuego, to the lurid Intermezzo from Mascagni's Cavalleria Rusticana, Casco Phil traverses almost the entire emotional spectrum in a bird's eye view. In addition, we are looking forward to two solo works: the beautiful Romance No. 2 by Beethoven and the devilishly difficult Polonaise de Concert by Wieniawski. Rino Yoshimoto, a Japanese violinist from the ranks of the Queen Elisabeth Music Chapel, invites her audience to an evening full of memorable melodies, intimate lyricism and symphonic splendor.

Acclaimed by the Minneapolis Star-Tribune “as a performer of scintillating energy and imagination…with a fearless, fiery quality,” Aspen alumna Joyce Yang returns for Falla’s Night in the Gardens of Spain. Not quite a piano concerto, the piece can be seen as musical tribute to the composer’s beloved Andalusia. You’ll hear influences of flamenco, guitar, and in Falla’s words, “melancholy and mystery.” The concert begins with a short prayer and “serenade to the past” by Gabriela Lena Frank, inspired by the composer’s visit with her mother to the site in Peru where the Spanish defeated the Inca Empire.

Join us for an enchanting evening under the stars at the Benedict Music Tent on July 9, 2021, at 5:30 PM MT, as the Aspen Chamber Symphony, led by the illustrious conductor Nicholas McGegan, presents a captivating program that promises to be a highlight of the summer season. This special concert, part of the Aspen Music Festival and School, features a selection of mostly 18th-century compositions that are sure to delight audiences.

The evening will commence with the overture to "L’amant anonyme," op. 11 no. 2 by Joseph Bologne, a contemporary of Mozart and a pioneering black composer whose work has recently been celebrated for its charm and historical significance. Following this, violinist Stephen Waarts, acclaimed for his performance of the Khachaturian Violin Concerto in 2019, will take the stage to perform Mozart’s elegant and enchanting Violin Concerto No. 3 in G major, K. 216, Strassburg.

Adding to the evening’s allure, soprano Julia Bullock, honored by Musical America as a 2021 Artist of the Year: Agent of Change, will transport the audience to India with her rendition of DeLage’s song cycle "Quatre poèmes hindous," inspired by the composer’s travels. The concert will conclude with Haydn’s Symphony No. 82 in C major, Hob. I/82, "The Bear," a piece known for its vivacity and harmonic ingenuity, which earned Haydn the reputation of a compositional rock star across Europe.

This 75-minute performance, with no intermission, is a testament to the joy and energy of live music. A Spanish travelogue via three of Iberia’s finest composers. First, Isaac Albéniz offers up loving portraits of Spain’s grand old cities, in music evoking their beauty and mystery. Joaquín Rodrigo’s Concierto de Aranjuez (familiar to Miles Davis fans) is a guitar concerto of deeply felt expression and sparkling colors. Finally, Manuel de Falla’s music to the ballet-pantomime The Three-Cornered Hat brings a cosmopolitan sensibility to a classic Spanish tale.

The concert opens with José Pablo Moncayo’s Huapango, a lively and joyful tribute to the popular music of the Mexican state of Veracruz. Manuel de Falla’s gorgeously orchestrated Nights in the Gardens of Spain featuring the debut of young Mexican pianist Rachid Bernal will immerse us in Spanish Impressionism. Silvestre Revueltas is one of the giants among Mexican composers, and I am very excited to introduce to you his suite from the movie La Noche de Los Mayas, featuring a multimedia presentation of Mayan art. And finally, a great mariachi ensemble Mariachi Los Camperos will play selections of Mexican songs with the Madison Symphony. A truly unique concert designed to lift your spirits and bring my 30th anniversary celebration to a rousing and joyful finale.

The music of Spain features evocative compositions from Manuel de Falla, Joaquín Rodrigo and Maurice Ravel. De Falla’s Ritual Fire Dance is a movement of the ballet El amor brujo utilizes fast, repetitive trills and ornamentations, with the oboe introducing the dance’s twists and turns. Aranjuez Concerto for classical guitar by Joaquín Rodrigo was inspired by the Royal Palace of Aranjuez, transporting the listener to another place and time. Ravel’s Rhapsodia Espagniola, Alborada del gracioso, and Pavane for a Dead Princess showcase numerous elements of Spanish music inspired by the composer’s heritage.

Fiesta season comes early with the welcome return of James Ehnes, one of the world’s finest violinists. At the heart of this programme is Saint-Saëns' impassioned Third Violin Concerto. It’s a classic, written for the virtuoso Pablo de Sarasate, who wasn’t averse to writing the odd tune for his own instrument either. In Sarasate’s hands, the violin becomes Carmen, the exotic figure who beguiled toreadors and composers alike. Manuel de Falla keeps things smouldering with The Three-Cornered Hat. It’s a tale worthy of El Dorado (the lost golden city and the BBC soap), infused with Andalusian folk music and the dance rhythms of flamenco and the fandango. On the podium, Juanjo Mena returns to keep things in order in a programme with sun-kissed music by Ravel and Berlioz.

The Spanish conductor-composer Francisco Coll makes his debut with the BBC Symphony Orchestra, conducting two of his own works. Aqua Cinerea – the title means evoking ash-grey water or perhaps even the image of ash falling as rain – is his magical first orchestral work written in 2005 when Coll was 19. Hímnica (2020) is a kind of passacaglia, or chaconne, in which a hymnic theme develops in different ways within one slow tempo.

Passions run high in our third Masterworks. Music from, and about, Spain frame a virtuoso tango-inflected violin concerto from Argentina. We open with excerpts from Bizet’s Carmen— including the indelible Seguedille and Toréadors. Though French, Bizet brilliantly captures the swagger and ardor of the Iberian spirit. Spaniard Manuel de Falla’s energized, colorful ballet score, written for Diaghilev’s Ballet Russes (of Rite of Spring fame), overflowing with drama, high spirits, and, of course, castanets, occupies the second half. In between Astor Piazzolla’s homage to Vivaldi fuses classical forms with the passions of tango.

The 2023-2024 OES Concert Season will open on 2:30pm, Sunday, November 5th, 2023, with Maestro Beau Benson conducting Igor Stravinsky's "Firebird Suite" and Bedrich Smetana's "Die Moldau". Also to receive its Pacific Northwest premiere is the 1970 revision of mid-century American female composer Radie Britain's "Cactus Rhapsody". Finally, the OES Youth Orchestra will play side-by-side with the Symphony for a performance of Manuel de Falla's "Danza Ritual del Fuego".

Join Maestro Eylar as he kicks off the 72nd season of the California Youth Symphony with a dazzling program featuring the award-winning and internationally recognized Senior Orchestra. We are both honored and delighted to be part of the new project California Festival: A Celebration of New Music and present a world premiere by noted Argentinian composer Valeria Pelka. Commissioned by the California Youth Symphony, Memorias Argentinas is a three-movement work that is inspired by the African roots of much Argentinian folk music: in particular, the chacarera, zamba, and malambo.

The California Youth Symphony (CYS) was founded in 1952 and has earned an international reputation for the excellence of its music programs. In 1963 CYS became the first American youth orchestra to tour overseas. Its guest artists have included such luminaries as Duke Ellington, Jack Benny, and Mary Costa, as well as an ever-expanding roster of rising young talent.

California Festival: Season Opener

Jean Sibelius, Manuel de Falla and Adolphus Hailstork all spoke through their music to the landscapes, peoples, and histories of their respective nations. Sibelius’s overture evokes the Karelian region of Finland with marching strings, horn fanfares, and soaring brass. Manuel de Falla’s fantasy paints vivid gardens with the myriad colors of the orchestra and piano. Finally, Adolphus Hailstork’s symphony bursts forth with a defiant rhythmic energy and pastoral sensibility that is both born of and unlimited by the traditions of 20th century American music.

Petrushka instantly drops us into another world; Stravinsky's orchestral classic is a wild torrent of vivid rhythms and charismatic vignettes, each more colorful than the last. Falla's delightful Three-Cornered Hat, on the other hand, introduces us to a hilarious love triangle. Celebrated cellist Joshua Roman plays a new concerto by Grammy Award-winning composer Mason Bates, who describes Roman as "beloved by just about everyone who meets him."

A performance of Concierto de Aranjuez by Joaquín Rodrigo with the National Repertory Orchestra marked his concerto debut, and since then he has performed repertories with numerous symphony orchestras, including the diabolical Concierto para una Fiesta by Rodrigo. A solo concert in Germany marked Ito’s European debut. The Japanese government has invited Ito to perform solo concerts in honor of two historic milestones – 150 years of U.S.-Japan diplomatic relations, and the 70th anniversary of the end of World War II. Recently Ito traveled extensively in Spain giving solo concerts and clinics, including a performance as featured soloist for the Andrés Segovia International Guitar Festival in Linares, the birthplace of Segovia.

The concert will feature an introduction by Jim Mehrling, highlighting the exceptional pieces selected for our October orchestra series. This event is dedicated to celebrating the contributions and talents of Black composers and musicians, featuring performances by soloists Travis Guillory, Elizabeth Hanje, Benhur Mosazghi, and Daniel Gilbert.
