Haydn, on the evening of the first performance of Symphony No. 104 “London” , which took place at the King's Theatre in Haymarket, London, on 13 April 1795, for the Opera Concerts organisation under his personal direction, was certainly satisfied not only with the large profit to which he referred in this note in his diary, but also with the resounding success, destined to be repeated just under a month later, on 4 May 1795, at a farewell concert which featured only his compositions, including this Symphony No. 104. The symphony, in effect, is a true farewell not only to the English public, but also to the symphonic genre in the broader sense, since, in addition to being the last of the 12 London symphonies, it is also the last composition written in this form. It has three titles, the first of which, London , refers to the city that had given him the greatest success in his last years, to the point of tempting him to take English citizenship, while the second, Salomon , is in honor of the impresario Peter Salomon who in 1790 had commissioned Haydn to compose the first six London symphonies. Finally, the third title, della zampogna , refers to the long pedal of the initial part of the Finale , entrusted to the basses and horns, which recalls the effect of the bagpipes.
