A critic of Italian opera and its structure, Wagner, however, always showed great admiration for Vincenzo Bellini, and in particular for Norma , which he considered worthy of comparison with Greek tragedy and the great classical operas of Gluck. In an essay published on the occasion of a performance he conducted in Riga in 1837, the German composer praised it for its attention to the text, its long-drawn-out melodies, and the interplay between music and text, which he deemed intrinsically dramatic and theatrical.

Friendship, youth, love: never before, and perhaps never since, have falling in love and the transition to adulthood been portrayed as perfectly as in Puccini's La Bohème. It boasts a sparkling libretto, memorable characters, and some of the most beautiful melodies ever created.
