It's no wonder that Viennese-born Fritz Kreisler was familiar with the "Viennese style," which is reflected in the collection of character pieces entitled Alt-Wiener Tanzweisen (Old Viennese Dance Tunes) : "Liebesfreud," "Liebesleid ," and "Schön Rosmarin" ( Love's Joy), "Liebesleid," and "Schön Rosmarin" (Beautiful Rosemary) are three charming miniatures, exhilarating and catchy, the second also somewhat elegiac—but all three with melodic wit and elegance. It's a true curiosity that the composer Fritz Kreisler long concealed the fact that he himself composed his encores for violin recitals, which often appear as stylistic copies. Kreisler himself liked to play them as encores, and for many soloists, they are still part of the "musical confectionery" with which the audience is treated to a sweet end to the concert.

The young Swedish-Norwegian violinist Johan Dalene has long demonstrated that virtuoso violin music is also at home in Northern Europe. As one of the world's most sought-after young artists, he champions the composers of his Scandinavian homeland. He recorded the album "Nordic Rhapsody" with pianist Christian Ihle Hadland, on which the two immerse themselves entirely in the Nordic soundscape, sometimes light-heartedly, sometimes profoundly. Welcome to the Munich Radio Orchestra's first chamber concert at a new venue, the Künstlerhaus am Lenbachplatz! Three central works will caress the ear this evening with the typical warmth of the Viennese string trio sound: Based on a piano sonata, Haydn's Opus 53 No. 1, scored for violin, viola, and cello, unfolds its plasticity and sonic volume. In his Serenade Op. 8, Beethoven achieved a fusion of stylized dance and classical form. Reminiscences of Mozart and Haydn characterize Schubert's fragmentary Trio, D. 471. The finale features three bon vivants from the pen of the Viennese-born and cosmopolitan violinist Fritz Kreisler: "Liebesleid," "Liebesfreud," and "Schön Rosmarin."

We begin with Fritz Kreisler’s Praeludium and Allegro, a lush reimagining of Baroque melody. Charles Ives follows with his inventive Violin Sonata no. 4, blending hymns, folk tunes, and bold harmonies to create a vibrantly eclectic soundscape of American life. The first half closes with Ernest Bloch’s Violin Sonata no. 2, Poème mystique, which shifts to a more introspective tone, offering profound emotional depth rooted in his Jewish heritage. The second half opens with John Adams’s Road Movies, a rhythmic portrayal of contemporary life, and continues with Amy Beach’s Romance for Violin and Piano, honoring one of America’s pioneering female composers. Two outstanding young musicians give an atmospheric duo recital in the idyllically located Palais im Großen Garten: only last season, the Finnish-Cuban pianist Anton Mejias, born in 2001, won over the festival audience with his piano recital in the same location. Now, he returns with a violin partner, one of the most high-profile violinists of his generation. The American violinist Chad Hoopes, born in 1994, has made a name for himself worldwide with his outstanding talent and brilliant tone. The two young virtuosi have put together a resounding program inspired by the theme of love, in keeping with the Festival’s motto. Fiery finger acrobatics and an enchanting sound blend to create a concert leaving nothing to be desired.

CYS will present its final season concert featuring both the Associate Orchestra and the Virtuosi and Intermezzi String Ensembles at 1:00 PM on May 18 at Smithwick Theater, Foothill College. Maestra Kati Kyme will conduct works by Gabriel Fauré, C.P.E. Bach, and Joseph Haydn with the Virtuosi String Ensemble. Haydn composed his Symphony No. 45 in 1768 during his “Sturm und Drang” (Storm and Stress) period, and it carries the subtitle “La Passione”. The Intermezzi Strings will perform works by Mozart and Schubert, as well as selections from Gustav Holst’s St. Paul Suite.

Since its inception, Musica Juventutis has been a cornerstone of Austrian concert culture and a fixture in the Vienna Konzerthaus's music program. Many internationally acclaimed artists, such as Angelika Kirchschlager, Till Fellner, and Patricia Kopatchinskaja, made their debuts as part of Musica Juventutis. This year, we present Leonhard Baumgartner, an up-and-coming violinist who made his debut with the Vienna Symphony Orchestra at the age of 15. With this series, the Vienna and Blaibach concert halls are continuing a collaboration made possible through the generous support of Dr. Burkhard and Gabriele Gantenbein.

The young violinist Johan Dalene (born 2000) took home first prize at the prestigious Carl Nielsen International Competition in 2019. The last to occupy the violin chair in the legendary Beaux Arts Trio, the visionary violinist Daniel Hope makes his first recital appearance at Chamber Music Detroit with pianist Maxim Lando.  Their exquisite program conjures up “La Belle Epoque” when the beauty of Paris and Vienna dominated music making of the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

Visionary Duo: Tessa Lark & Peter Dugan

Student violinists Daisy Abbott, Eva Chen, Karin Furuhata, Emily Kim, and Gedi Weidig; oboist Monty Ellwanger; pianist Charis Kim and soprano Gabriela Poplawski; perform a variety of selections that they have studied with faculty during the semester. They will be assisted by pianist Kyungmi Kim.

The award-winning American pianist Lindsay Garritson is rapidly becoming an international rising star, with her great charisma, masterful technique, huge repertoire, and penetrating intelligence. Her passionate advocacy of contemporary music has led her to recently record the complete works of the Australian composer Carl Vine. She will include his Five Intermezzi on this program, which she premiered earlier this year.

The program for the evening includes a varied selection of pieces that showcase the duo's dynamic range and musical prowess. Audiences can look forward to Bartók’s playful Romanian Folk Dances, Stravinsky’s graceful Suite Italienne from Pulcinella, Saint-Saens’s passionate Introduction and Rondo Capriccioso, Sarasate’s Spanish Dances, Op. 22, and more. Each piece has been carefully chosen to highlight the unique combination of mandolin and accordion, offering a fresh perspective on these classical compositions.
