The young Swedish-Norwegian violinist Johan Dalene has long demonstrated that virtuoso violin music is also at home in Northern Europe. Welcome to the Munich Radio Orchestra's first chamber concert at a new venue, the Künstlerhaus am Lenbachplatz! Three central works will caress the ear this evening with the typical warmth of the Viennese string trio sound: Based on a piano sonata, Haydn's Opus 53 No. 1, scored for violin, viola, and cello, unfolds its plasticity and sonic volume. In his Serenade Op. 8, Beethoven achieved a fusion of stylized dance and classical form. Reminiscences of Mozart and Haydn characterize Schubert's fragmentary Trio, D. 471. The finale features three bon vivants from the pen of the Viennese-born and cosmopolitan violinist Fritz Kreisler: "Liebesleid," "Liebesfreud," and "Schön Rosmarin."

We begin with Fritz Kreisler’s Praeludium and Allegro, a lush reimagining of Baroque melody. Charles Ives follows with his inventive Violin Sonata no. 4, blending hymns, folk tunes, and bold harmonies to create a vibrantly eclectic soundscape of American life. The first half closes with Ernest Bloch’s Violin Sonata no. 2, Poème mystique, which shifts to a more introspective tone, offering profound emotional depth rooted in his Jewish heritage. Two outstanding young musicians give an atmospheric duo recital in the idyllically located Palais im Großen Garten: only last season, the Finnish-Cuban pianist Anton Mejias, born in 2001, won over the festival audience with his piano recital in the same location. Now, he returns with a violin partner, one of the most high-profile violinists of his generation. The American violinist Chad Hoopes, born in 1994, has made a name for himself worldwide with his outstanding talent and brilliant tone. The two young virtuosi have put together a resounding program inspired by the theme of love, in keeping with the Festival’s motto. Fiery finger acrobatics and an enchanting sound blend to create a concert leaving nothing to be desired.

CYS will present its final season concert featuring both the Associate Orchestra and the Virtuosi and Intermezzi String Ensembles at 1:00 PM on May 18 at Smithwick Theater, Foothill College. Maestra Kati Kyme will conduct works by Gabriel Fauré, C.P.E. Bach, and Joseph Haydn with the Virtuosi String Ensemble. Haydn composed his Symphony No. 45 in 1768 during his “Sturm und Drang” (Storm and Stress) period, and it carries the subtitle “La Passione”. The Intermezzi Strings will perform works by Mozart and Schubert, as well as selections from Gustav Holst’s St. Paul Suite.

Since its inception, Musica Juventutis has been a cornerstone of Austrian concert culture and a fixture in the Vienna Konzerthaus's music program. Many internationally acclaimed artists, such as Angelika Kirchschlager, Till Fellner, and Patricia Kopatchinskaja, made their debuts as part of Musica Juventutis. This year, we present Leonhard Baumgartner, an up-and-coming violinist who made his debut with the Vienna Symphony Orchestra at the age of 15. Two trailblazing instrumental pioneers come together for a very special recital! Israeli-born mandolin virtuoso Avi Avital, well known to Cal Performances audiences, has charted new territory on his instrument with innovative programming and inspired collaborations.
