Peruvian conductor Miguel Harth-Bedoya leads the San Francisco Symphony in a globe-hopping, toe-tapping program that’s bursting with rhythm and color. Among the highlights is Shift, a new trombone concerto by Lima native Jimmy López—performed by SF Symphony Principal Trombone Timothy Higgins—inspired by “the behavior of waves as observed through the Doppler effect.” The Spanish composer Joaquín Turina wrote his most famous work, Danzas fantásticas, in 1919, inspired by the novel La orgía by José Más. Printed on the score at the start of each dance are quotations from the novel, which convey the ecstatic splendor of Turina’s music. Born in the French Pyrenees to a Basque mother reared in Madrid, Maurice Ravel embraced a cross-cultural style. We invite you to travel to Latin America with music! The Lithuanian Symphony Wind Orchestra Chamber Ensemble presents a program specially prepared for this concert, “Latin Wind”, which will take you to the colorful and passionate rhythms of Latin America. At the concert, you will hear works by famous, but less frequently performed in our concert halls, composers from Mexico, Venezuela, Brazil, and Argentina for wind ensembles of various compositions, covering a wide range of styles – from the energetic dance music intonations of Arturo Márquez and Aldemar Romero to the mystically colorful “Quarteto simbólico” by Villa-Lobos or the pieces of Silvestre Revueltas created in the spirit of modernism.

One of the most controversial of all concert pieces, Ravel’s Boléro (1928) is both an incomparable feast for the ears
– languid, modal melodies, crooning saxophones, Spanish dance rhythms – and a puzzle for the brain, as it is a work
whose marvelous variety and sensational climax are built on mechanistic repetition. The composer himself once
half-jokingly characterized it as “a crescendo without music.” This evening, the famous Boléro is matched with
Rachmaninov’s riveting, perennially popular Symphonic Dances for orchestra, and the Variaciones concertantes of
Argentinian composer Alberto Ginastera, in which a lyrical theme for cello and harp is taken on a tour of the whole
orchestra.

Dvořák’s “New World” Symphony, written during his time in the US, draws on the character of American musical traditions, charting a path for later composers. The concert also looks elsewhere in the New World, with works from Mexico and Argentina that similarly incorporate national styles: Arturo Márquez’s trumpet concerto with virtuoso Pacho Flores and Alberto Ginastera’s dance-like variations.

Argentinian composer Alberto Ginastera’s extraordinary string quartet combines rhythmic ferocity with South American folk music. Uruguayan native Enrique Crespo’s delightful brass quintet takes the listener on a sonic tour of the Americas, including the sounds of New Orleans, Brazil, Peru, Argentina, and Mexico. In a unique convergence of musical voices, this program beckons us into a realm where music becomes an emissary of peace and unity. On this journey, we hope to lift every voice and remember our complex history while looking toward our shared journey toward a brighter tomorrow. We explore peace while remembering the conflict of past and present and recognizing the repeated history and the resilience of the human spirit. From William Grant Still, celebrated as the “Dean of African American Composers,” to José White's stirring Cuban melodies, every note resonates with our collective aspirations for harmony and understanding without borders. This is a collection of new voices, those that have already shaped our canon and those that we hope will continue to be celebrated long after our time together. As Alberto Ginastera's Concerto for Strings takes us toward a triumphant crescendo, you will join us in a jubilant celebration of the human spirit's indomitable resilience and our unwavering commitment to the pursuit of peace. We reflect on themes of war, anguish, and loss through Ruben Rengel's setting of Prokofiev's "Stalingrad" Sonata. Jessie Montgomery's music helps us transcend boundaries and borders, while our vision for shared humanity is brought together through Quenton Blache's title composition.

Hailed as “the most beautiful tenor voice since Luciano Pavarotti” (Süddeutsche Zeitung), tenor Benjamin Bernheim has ignited an opera-world frenzy unlike any in recent years. His electrifying rise has taken him from the world’s greatest stages—the Met, La Scala, the Royal Opera House, Palais Garnier—to historic moments like performing at the closing ceremonies of the Paris Olympics and the reopening of Notre Dame Cathedral, earning him the title of “France’s new favorite tenor.” (The New York Times). Now, in a rare recital appearance for his Princeton University Concerts debut, Bernheim trades the grand opera house for an intimate chamber setting, bringing his signature artistry to a handpicked program of romance, longing, and nostalgia. From the lush sensuality of Duparc and Chausson to Spanish and South American gems by Mompou, Turina, and Ginastera, the evening culminates in the timeless melodies of Puccini and the poignant beauty of French chanson. No grand sets, no spectacle—just one of the world’s greatest tenors unfiltered, singing his favorite music just for you.

Many people - or should we say millions of people - know Hayato Sumino as Cateen, because under this artist or influencer name the pianist inspires a constantly growing online fan base for his art: people who otherwise don't have much to do with classical music. The young Japanese has been proving for years that he is also up to the demands of a "normal" concert career, for example with his victory at the PTNA piano competition in his home country in 2018 or his participation in the Chopin Competition in Warsaw in 2021, which was closely followed by the media. As if these talents alone were not enough, Hayato Sumino also has a degree in engineering and is himself active as a composer and arranger. How does Mozart's "Turkish March", the third movement from the wonderful A major Sonata KV 331, sound when you chase it through all major and minor keys? In his 24 variations on this theme, Sumino provides the answer – and contrasts it with the lively arrangement of a Gershwin classic: “An American in Paris”, which also stops by Bochum for a quick visit.
