Since 2016, the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra has hosted an ”Orchestra Academy”. The international RSPO Orchestra Academy is a one-year, advanced academic programme for young musicians. Under the guidance of the section leaders from the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra and the Piteå School of Music, the musicians receive intensive training individually, in chamber music, and orchestral playing.

The Waco Symphony welcomes Emily Levin, the principal harp of the Dallas Symphony in Ginastera’s colorful Harp Concerto. Maestro Loh is a champion of the music of Polina Nazaykinskaya and will open the second half with her brand new work, Elegy XXII, a work that yearns for peace amongst conflict, loss and despair. This concert truly showcases the power of music.

Young artists from Caramoor’s Evnin Rising Stars mentoring program perform in a pair of afternoon concerts for which the program’s Artistic Director, cellist Marcy Rosen, is joined by distinguished artists Ani Kavafian, violin, and Becca Albers, viola. These concerts are the capstone of a weeklong residency at Caramoor in which these young musicians participate in workshops, reading sessions, and ensemble rehearsals, culminating in live performances with their mentors. Since 1992, this program has identified some of the finest musicians of the next generation and helped them cross the threshold from their student years into the early stages of a professional career.

The orchestra's specialty: transforming a classical concert hall into a truly exuberant atmosphere. There's no question that this year's guest performance will also feature plenty of rhythm and son, plenty of Cuba, and even more enthusiasm.

Astor Piazzolla machte den vormals verruchten Tango Argentino konzertsaalfähig; in seinem wohl berühmtesten Stück verabschiedete er sich mit sehnsuchtsvollen Klängen von seinem Vater. Darius Milhaud galt in den 1920ern als enfant terrible der Pariser Musikszene; als Attaché des französischen Botschafters in Rio de Janeiro schnappte er lokale Sounds auf und integrierte sie in seine Werke. Mit der Saxofon-Virtuosin Asya Fateyeva ist eine dynamische Solistin mit von der Partie, die ebenfalls locker zwischen Klassik und anderen Musikstilen wandelt.

This spirited programme is a celebration of the piano through dance, from the sweeping elegance of Chopin’s waltzes and polonaises to the sultry rhythms of Granados’ Danzas española and the fiery energy of Ginastera’s Suite de danzas criollas. Expect the whirling romance of Ravel’s and Respighi’s waltzes, the swagger of Prokofiev’s Mercutio, and the heady swirl of Brahms’ Hungarian Dances.

Many people - or should we say millions of people - know Hayato Sumino as Cateen, because under this artist or influencer name the pianist inspires a constantly growing online fan base for his art: people who otherwise don't have much to do with classical music. The young Japanese has been proving for years that he is also up to the demands of a "normal" concert career, for example with his victory at the PTNA piano competition in his home country in 2018 or his participation in the Chopin Competition in Warsaw in 2021, which was closely followed by the media. As if these talents alone were not enough, Hayato Sumino also has a degree in engineering and is himself active as a composer and arranger. How does Mozart's "Turkish March", the third movement from the wonderful A major Sonata KV 331, sound when you chase it through all major and minor keys? In his 24 variations on this theme, Sumino provides the answer – and contrasts it with the lively arrangement of a Gershwin classic: “An American in Paris”, which also stops by Bochum for a quick visit.

We are very excited to be ending our season with the first ever visit to the UK of the internationally famous Buenos Aires Symphony Orchestra of Colón Opera.  This concert is of particular significance as we celebrate Bradford’s year as the UK’s City of Culture, with a performance of our own city’s great composer Frederik Delius’s piano concerto, performed by the distinguished British pianist Mark Bebbington.  Prior to the tour, this great Delius work will receive its Argentinian premiere, a concert that has been inspired by our position as the UK’s City of Culture.  The programme will open with Wagner’s romantic Prelude & Liebestod from Tristan & Isolde and in the second half there will be music from Bizet’s much-loved Carmen Suite, Tchaikovsky’s lyrical Swan Lake suite and the programme will end with two dazzling, scintillating show stoppers from two of Argentina’s greatest composers - Alberto Ginastera and Astor Piazzolla.

Prepare to be swept off your feet as Dalia Stasevska returns to Seattle with a program celebrating the rhythms of Mexico and Argentina. The Night of the Maya pulsates with a huge percussion section, traditional instruments and a full orchestra. Originally composing for a 1939 film score, Revueltas created an orchestral suite to give this music a life in the concert hall. Malambo illustrates the infectious rhythms of Argentinian gaucho dance traditions. And beloved collaborator Augustin Hadelich brings Prokofiev at his most wickedly daring with the First Violin Concerto — a concert that could very well raise the roof of Benaroya Hall.

In 1800, Beethoven was 29 years old and facing a major commission to write his first work for the stage, a ballet based on the myth of Prometheus. The Italian composer and dancer Salvatore Viganò was originally tasked with presenting the work to the Viennese Archduchess Maria Theresa. While Viganò usually composed his own music for his performances, he felt this performance was far too important and asked Beethoven to compose instead. The complete music for the ballet consisted of an overture, introduction, and sixteen numbers, but, since the overture was the only one Beethoven had written at that time, he often performed it separately to open concerts of his music.

River Rhapsodies: Southern Harmony

Maurice Ravel's imaginative and even humorous La valse is a tribute to the waltz and Johann Strauss II. Originally, the working title for this music was "Vienne", then he changed it from the French spelling to German, "Wien", before finally deciding that the fitting title would be La valse. Ravel and Argentine Alberto Ginastera frame the program, the latter with fiery dance in the form of Malambo.

Lauded by La Presse of Montreal as a miracle, Chooi will captivate audiences with his performance of Bruch’s romantic First Violin Concerto. The night begins under the baton of guest conductor Maximiano Valdes, who will lead the orchestra through Alberto Ginastera’s hypnotic Pampeana No. 3, a vibrant montage of dazzling Argentinian folk rhythms. The program culminates with Shostakovich’s stirring Sixth Symphony, composed in 1939, which evocatively captures a world on the brink. Don't be happy too late is the inversion of the well-known motto. Or as a classic: "Always look on the bright side of life". The motto comes from the comedy troupe Monty Python and is still apt. Children and fools are in a good mood and they tell the truth. They dare to do things that are not otherwise appropriate: to be blunt and direct, to hold up a mirror to others, to look at themselves in it, not to take themselves too seriously and to infect others with their anarchic cheerfulness. Sometimes fools also fib. Never mind. When you laugh, you recognize a truth that you would otherwise only suspect through deep thought. A New Year's concert about fools and comedians in music.

“My debut concert celebrates how music can be an act of homage. The pieces I have chosen are all brought together by a common thread, with each composer paying tribute to something or someone great, a gesture that I find to be deeply meaningful. Whether it be Beethoven’s homage to Mozart, Ginastera’s visceral exploration of the Argentine landscapes, or Brahms’s reverence for Bach, I hope to give you a glimpse into what moved these great composers to write their remarkable and captivating music.”
