Peruvian conductor Miguel Harth-Bedoya leads the San Francisco Symphony in a globe-hopping, toe-tapping program that’s bursting with rhythm and color. Among the highlights is Shift, a new trombone concerto by Lima native Jimmy López—performed by SF Symphony Principal Trombone Timothy Higgins—inspired by “the behavior of waves as observed through the Doppler effect.” The Spanish composer Joaquín Turina wrote his most famous work, Danzas fantásticas, in 1919, inspired by the novel La orgía by José Más. Printed on the score at the start of each dance are quotations from the novel, which convey the ecstatic splendor of Turina’s music. Born in the French Pyrenees to a Basque mother reared in Madrid, Maurice Ravel embraced a cross-cultural style. Rapsodie espagnole boasts Spanish-inflected castanets and tambourine, shadowy low winds, muted brass, and blazing instrumental colors.

Escher String Quartet has received acclaim for its profound musical insight and rare tonal beauty. A former BBC New Generation Artist and recipient of the Avery Fisher Career Grant, the quartet has performed at the BBC Proms at Cadogan Hall and is a regular guest at Wigmore Hall. In its home town of New York, the ensemble serves as season artists of the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center.

Brandon Patrick George, hailed as a “knockout musician with a gorgeous sound” by The Philadelphia Inquirer, is a GRAMMY-winning flutist whose repertoire extends from the Baroque era to today. He is the flutist of Imani Winds and has appeared as a soloist with the Atlanta, Baltimore, and Albany symphonies, American Composers Orchestra, and the Orchestra of St. Luke’s, among others.

The Lithuanian Symphony Wind Orchestra Chamber Ensemble presents a program specially prepared for this concert, “Latin Wind”, which will take you to the colorful and passionate rhythms of Latin America. One of the most controversial of all concert pieces, Ravel’s Boléro (1928) is both an incomparable feast for the ears
– languid, modal melodies, crooning saxophones, Spanish dance rhythms – and a puzzle for the brain, as it is a work
whose marvelous variety and sensational climax are built on mechanistic repetition. The composer himself once
half-jokingly characterized it as “a crescendo without music.” This evening, the famous Boléro is matched with
Rachmaninov’s riveting, perennially popular Symphonic Dances for orchestra, and the Variaciones concertantes of
Argentinian composer Alberto Ginastera, in which a lyrical theme for cello and harp is taken on a tour of the whole
orchestra.

Dvořák’s “New World” Symphony, written during his time in the US, draws on the character of American musical traditions, charting a path for later composers. The concert also looks elsewhere in the New World, with works from Mexico and Argentina that similarly incorporate national styles: Arturo Márquez’s trumpet concerto with virtuoso Pacho Flores and Alberto Ginastera’s dance-like variations.

Argentinian composer Alberto Ginastera’s extraordinary string quartet combines rhythmic ferocity with South American folk music. Uruguayan native Enrique Crespo’s delightful brass quintet takes the listener on a sonic tour of the Americas, including the sounds of New Orleans, Brazil, Peru, Argentina, and Mexico. Cuban jazz musician Paquito D’Rivera is a master at combining jazz and classical traditions. His lively wind quintet is a tribute to the sounds of the Caribbean, Venezuela, and American jazz.

Since 2016, the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra has hosted an ”Orchestra Academy”. The international RSPO Orchestra Academy is a one-year, advanced academic programme for young musicians. Under the guidance of the section leaders from the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra and the Piteå School of Music, the musicians receive intensive training individually, in chamber music, and orchestral playing.

Warm up your January with the Calgary Phil and conductor Fawzi Haimor in this wide-ranging program featuring Ginastera's spirited Argentine dances and Gershwin's musical portrait of a wistful American wandering the streets of Paris. The Calgary Youth Orchestra joins the Phil in a side-by-side performance of Valerie Coleman's bold musical call for unity in a divided world, and Canadian cellist Luka Coetzee is the blazing protagonist in the sweeping drama of Prokofiev's Sinfonia concertante. The Waco Symphony welcomes Emily Levin, the principal harp of the Dallas Symphony in Ginastera’s colorful Harp Concerto. Maestro Loh is a champion of the music of Polina Nazaykinskaya and will open the second half with her brand new work, Elegy XXII, a work that yearns for peace amongst conflict, loss and despair. This concert truly showcases the power of music.

Young artists from Caramoor’s Evnin Rising Stars mentoring program perform in a pair of afternoon concerts for which the program’s Artistic Director, cellist Marcy Rosen, is joined by distinguished artists Ani Kavafian, violin, and Becca Albers, viola. These concerts are the capstone of a weeklong residency at Caramoor in which these young musicians participate in workshops, reading sessions, and ensemble rehearsals, culminating in live performances with their mentors. Since 1992, this program has identified some of the finest musicians of the next generation and helped them cross the threshold from their student years into the early stages of a professional career.

Framing this moving work are the lilting and spirited Estancia: Four Dances by Ginastera and Brahms’s titanic Piano Concerto No. 1, performed with passion by acclaimed Mexican pianist Jorge Federico Osorio.

It's pure "soul food," says Stewart Goodyear of his suite for piano and orchestra entitled "Callaloo." He wanted to create a musical tribute to his Caribbean roots. With a blend of jazz, African, and French influences, which for him are the musical heart of Trinidad, the Havana Lyceum Orchestra imports Caribbean sound to Wiesbaden in this unique concert project. The orchestra's specialty: transforming a classical concert hall into a truly exuberant atmosphere. There's no question that this year's guest performance will also feature plenty of rhythm and son, plenty of Cuba, and even more enthusiasm.

Diesmal geht es nach Südamerika: Der Brasilianer Heitor Villa-Lobos und der Argentinier Alberto Ginastera verbanden den rhythmischen Drive ihrer Heimat mit der kompositorischen Raffinesse der europäischen Moderne. Astor Piazzolla machte den vormals verruchten Tango Argentino konzertsaalfähig; in seinem wohl berühmtesten Stück verabschiedete er sich mit sehnsuchtsvollen Klängen von seinem Vater. Darius Milhaud galt in den 1920ern als enfant terrible der Pariser Musikszene; als Attaché des französischen Botschafters in Rio de Janeiro schnappte er lokale Sounds auf und integrierte sie in seine Werke. Mit der Saxofon-Virtuosin Asya Fateyeva ist eine dynamische Solistin mit von der Partie, die ebenfalls locker zwischen Klassik und anderen Musikstilen wandelt.

This spirited programme is a celebration of the piano through dance, from the sweeping elegance of Chopin’s waltzes and polonaises to the sultry rhythms of Granados’ Danzas española and the fiery energy of Ginastera’s Suite de danzas criollas. Expect the whirling romance of Ravel’s and Respighi’s waltzes, the swagger of Prokofiev’s Mercutio, and the heady swirl of Brahms’ Hungarian Dances.

Many people - or should we say millions of people - know Hayato Sumino as Cateen, because under this artist or influencer name the pianist inspires a constantly growing online fan base for his art: people who otherwise don't have much to do with classical music. The young Japanese has been proving for years that he is also up to the demands of a "normal" concert career, for example with his victory at the PTNA piano competition in his home country in 2018 or his participation in the Chopin Competition in Warsaw in 2021, which was closely followed by the media. As if these talents alone were not enough, Hayato Sumino also has a degree in engineering and is himself active as a composer and arranger. How does Mozart's "Turkish March", the third movement from the wonderful A major Sonata KV 331, sound when you chase it through all major and minor keys? In his 24 variations on this theme, Sumino provides the answer – and contrasts it with the lively arrangement of a Gershwin classic: “An American in Paris”, which also stops by Bochum for a quick visit.

Join JoAnn Falletta and the BPO for a vibrant celebration of American music, starting with Copland’s El Salón México, a piece that captures the spirit and rhythms of Mexican dance halls. The concert features the world premiere of Adolphus Hailstork’s Concerto for Saxophone, performed by the exceptional Tim McAllister, promising a work of great emotion and virtuosity that explores the saxophone’s expressive range. Ginastera’s Variaciones concertantes offers a showcase of Argentine musical traditions, while Bernstein’s Symphonic Dances from West Side Story close the evening with thrilling, jazz-infused melodies and the drama of New York’s city streets. This program highlights the diversity and innovation of American music, celebrating its power to tell stories and evoke vivid landscapes.

We are very excited to be ending our season with the first ever visit to the UK of the internationally famous Buenos Aires Symphony Orchestra of Colón Opera.  This concert is of particular significance as we celebrate Bradford’s year as the UK’s City of Culture, with a performance of our own city’s great composer Frederik Delius’s piano concerto, performed by the distinguished British pianist Mark Bebbington.  Prior to the tour, this great Delius work will receive its Argentinian premiere, a concert that has been inspired by our position as the UK’s City of Culture.  The programme will open with Wagner’s romantic Prelude & Liebestod from Tristan & Isolde and in the second half there will be music from Bizet’s much-loved Carmen Suite, Tchaikovsky’s lyrical Swan Lake suite and the programme will end with two dazzling, scintillating show stoppers from two of Argentina’s greatest composers - Alberto Ginastera and Astor Piazzolla.

Works to be performed include the Overture to Mendelssohn's "A Midsummer Night's Dream," "Serenade for String Orchestra, Op. 20" by Elgar, and "Danza Finale" from Ginastera's "Estancia."


Also performing will be the beginner level Preludes Orchestra under the direction of Emma Norquist. Preludes will perform "Minuet" by Handel, the Korean folk song "Arirang," and an orchestral arrangement of "Seven Nation Army" by the rock band The White Stripes.
