The Viennese composer Thomas Daniel Schlee was unable to complete his Third Symphony: he died in November 2025. Manfred Honeck, a close friend of the composer, opens the concert with this symphonic fragment and closes it with Beethoven's Sixth Symphony, the Pastoral. Beethoven, a city dweller, draws inspiration from the countryside and places this work most impressively between symphony and program music. In between, Sergei Rachmaninoff's virtuosic Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini for piano and orchestra sparkles, performed by star pianist Seong-Jin Cho, who won the Warsaw Chopin Competition in 2015 and has since performed with the world's leading orchestras.
