Music Director Luisi will step into Stravinsky’s shoes as he conducts a replica of the 1946 concert, when the great composer led the DSO in these very works — an inspired program of quintessentially Russian music. To that point, we have a clue in the nickname of Tchaikovsky’s Second Symphony, with the final movement spinning colorful variations on “The Crane,” a lively folk song on everyone’s lips at the time. The Firebird’s exotic scenario is the stuff of fairytales: a prince, 13 princesses, the Firebird’s magic feather and an ogre. Its bold orchestral colors glitter and pulse, creating fantastic effects — from primitive to luminous — leading to a spectacular, shimmering climax.

Only the original instrumentation – and not one of many arrangements. That was the strict requirement of the three musical adventurers, Daniel Ottensamer, Stephan Koncz, and Christoph Traxler. The result is a complete anthology for clarinet trio, from which three pieces were chosen for an exciting journey. It begins with the healing power of bel canto sounds. For after a breakdown in Italy, Vincenzo Bellini enthusiast Mikhail Glinka essentially healed himself with the composition of his Trio pathétique. John Ireland then takes us to Britain's coast, complete with a sea shanty, before we reach the summit with the trio titan Beethoven.

This is going to be exciting! In 2021, Anna Clyne created a concerto featuring the saxophone as an unusual solo instrument, transporting us to mythical realms: "'Glasslands' conjures an imaginary world with three realms ruled by the banshee," says Clyne, "a female spirit who, in Irish folklore, announces the death of a family member by howling, shrieking, or wailing, usually in the stillness of the night." The soloist is Asya Fateyeva, a German saxophonist of Ukrainian descent. And Tchaikovsky's Fifth, one of his most popular symphonies, also features predestined events: "Total resignation to fate, or, what amounts to the same thing, to the inscrutable decree of providence," he wrote, referring to the first movement.

Perfect for a romantic evening out, this concert highlights musical couples, from the sweeping passion of Tchaikovsky’s Romeo and Juliet Fantasy Overture to the joyous sparkle of Glinka’s Ruslan and Lyudmila Overture. Hindemith’s Symphonic Metamorphosis on Themes of Weber, a colorful orchestral tour de force written shortly after he immigrated to America, references the story of Turandot and Prince Calaf. The secret sauce to what makes Dvořák’s G-major String Quintet so delectable is its incorporation of warm, hearty Bohemian folk elements as well as a rich and mighty double bass. While bass with string quartet is a less common chamber music combo, it’s certainly a satisfying choice for this work, giving it a greater, more robust range.

Mikhail Glinka is considered the first composer to strive to make uniquely Russian music. However, the overture to his most well-known opera Ruslan and Ludmila owes much to Western European tradition. It thus anticipates the works of Tchaikovsky, who was often derided in Russia as a "Westerner". After his 5th Symphony was performed in the last season, his 6th, "Pathétique," is now in the programme. His last work sounds at many points like an alternatingly angry and melancholic goodbye to the world. Prokofiev's violin concerto also seeks out a "new simplicity," much like all his earlier works, and a reconciliation of modernity and musical tradition.

In the mid-19th century, Russia emerged as an independent culture on the musical map of Europe. Mikhail Glinka, the "Father of Russian Music," made a decisive contribution to this through his operas and instrumental works – his overture to Ruslan and Ludmila is one of the outstanding examples of brilliant orchestral music. Decades later, the country's leading symphonist was Pyotr Tchaikovsky, whose emotionally profound Symphony No. 5 of 1888 is arguably one of the most significant achievements in the field of orchestral music. A certain symphonic character is also inherent in Beethoven's Piano Concerto No. 1, a work of both concentrated and effective composition from his virtuoso period around 1800.

Shostakovich composed his two cello concertos for his friend, the cellist and conductor Rostropovich. The virtuoso 1st and the introverted 2nd Rostropovitch had an international career, and great influence also on a violinist like Anne-Sophie Mutter. And here a connection was made: There is a direct line from Shostakovich to the cellist Daniel Müller-Schott, even though he was born the year after his death. Because through Anne-Sophie Mutter, Müller-Schott became a pupil of Rostropovitch. Not so that he could trudge to a classroom and play, no, he said when he was in Copenhagen a few years ago: Müller-Schott traveled after Rostropovich, because the master could think of calling late in the evening - and that was it to strike. You can imagine it, the young German and the old Russian in a hotel room in Germany somewhere... At the age of 15, Müller-Schott won the fine Tchaikovsky competition for young musicians in Moscow, and with his talent and good teachers, there was no long before he played with great orchestras and fine musicians; the list is long. Müller-Schott has also taken an interest in premiering new works for cello, and working with other art forms, in what seems like an eternal curiosity.

The North German Philharmonic Orchestra Rostock is starting the New Year 2025 in a festive and pompous manner, crossing Europe from Tsarist Russia to the French metropolis of Paris at the beginning of the 20th century. The young Chilean conductor Eduardo Browne Salinas, 1st conductor at the Rostock Volkstheater, will wave the baton and lead the large orchestra through the exciting program, which will present the overture to Ruslan and Ludmilla and a waltz fantasy by Mikhail Glinka, music by Claude Debussy and Maurice Ravel, and, as the crowning finale, Modest Mussorgsky's Pictures at an Exhibition in the orchestral arrangement by Maurice Ravel.

For the second time, the Jena Philharmonic Orchestra, under the direction of General Music Director Simon Gaudenz, invites members of the TA/TLZ and OTZ CLUB to an exclusive listening experience in the Volkshaus Jena. The concert afternoon opens with the energetic overture to Mikhail Glinka's opera "Ruslan and Lyudmila", premiered in 1842. Soloist Aleksey Shust and the orchestra then interpret the expressive trumpet concerto by the Armenian composer Alexander Arutjunjan - a modern classic from 1950 that impresses with striking themes, virtuoso passages and the impressive dialogue between soloist and orchestra. The second half of the concert is dedicated to Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov's "Scheherazade" suite from 1888, which takes the audience into a fascinating world full of exotic sounds and fairytale stories.

Join us for an enchanting afternoon of classical music featuring the acclaimed Sussex pianist, Maria Marchant, at the Assembly Hall in Worthing. Maria Marchant, a favorite among Worthing audiences, will perform Chopin’s mesmerizing 2nd Piano Concerto, a piece eagerly anticipated following her rapturous performances of Gershwin last season.

The concert will open with Glinka’s rousing "Overture Ruslan and Ludmila," a staple of the Worthing Symphony Orchestra’s annual Schools Concert. This will be followed by Scriabin’s "Reverie," a piece that showcases the composer’s unique blend of post-Chopin lyricism and romantic harmony. The event will culminate in a majestic performance of Brahms’s Symphony No. 1, a work often regarded as Beethoven’s 10th, taking the audience on a journey from darkness to light and ending in a triumphant blaze of orchestral sound.

In 1774, the encyclopaedia »Allgemeine Theorie der Schönen Künste« (General Theory of the Fine Arts) stated that only someone could compose trios »who combined all parts of art with a fruitful and lively imagination, and exercised himself to feel every trait of a character or passion musically and to articulate it in tones«. Our concert brings together three trios by composers who truly had what it takes. Although Brahms actually told his publisher in 1890 that it was »certainly time to go«, his creative energy came back and he composed the clarinet trio op. 114 a year later. Turned in on themselves and almost withdrawn, the instruments engage in a quiet dialogue here, loosened only by the two middle movements. A friend of Brahms said: »It is as if the instruments loved one another.« Clarinet, cello and piano are also musical soulmates in Beethoven‘s trio: According to one critic, they made »quite a good ensemble« in 1799. This popular Opus 11 was named the »Gassenhauer-Trio« (popular song trio) because the fiery opening movement and the heartfelt Adagio are followed by an entertaining finale for which Beethoven adopted a popular catchy tune – from Joseph Weigl‘s opera »L‘amor marinaro« (»The Corsair of Love«). However, the fact that too great feelings can also cause suffering is dealt with in Glinka‘s trio, which he prefaced in 1832 with the motto: »I have only experienced love through the pain it causes!« The emotional work seems like an expression of mental anguish set to music: Although the composer was living a carefree life in Italy at the time, the trio reveals the darker side – unhappy love affairs as well as physical ailments, so much so that one musician called out in dismay after the premiere: »What despair!«
