In 1774, the encyclopaedia »Allgemeine Theorie der Schönen Künste« (General Theory of the Fine Arts) stated that only someone could compose trios »who combined all parts of art with a fruitful and lively imagination, and exercised himself to feel every trait of a character or passion musically and to articulate it in tones«. Our concert brings together three trios by composers who truly had what it takes. Although Brahms actually told his publisher in 1890 that it was »certainly time to go«, his creative energy came back and he composed the clarinet trio op. 114 a year later. Turned in on themselves and almost withdrawn, the instruments engage in a quiet dialogue here, loosened only by the two middle movements. A friend of Brahms said: »It is as if the instruments loved one another.« Clarinet, cello and piano are also musical soulmates in Beethoven‘s trio: According to one critic, they made »quite a good ensemble« in 1799. This popular Opus 11 was named the »Gassenhauer-Trio« (popular song trio) because the fiery opening movement and the heartfelt Adagio are followed by an entertaining finale for which Beethoven adopted a popular catchy tune – from Joseph Weigl‘s opera »L‘amor marinaro« (»The Corsair of Love«). However, the fact that too great feelings can also cause suffering is dealt with in Glinka‘s trio, which he prefaced in 1832 with the motto: »I have only experienced love through the pain it causes!« The emotional work seems like an expression of mental anguish set to music: Although the composer was living a carefree life in Italy at the time, the trio reveals the darker side – unhappy love affairs as well as physical ailments, so much so that one musician called out in dismay after the premiere: »What despair!«

And Peter Tchaikovsky's Symphony No. 5, completed in 1888 after the European tour, is one of his most popular, along with the two neighboring symphonies. Edwin Outwater and the SFCM Orchestra kick off the season with a multigenerational and eclectic program of music inspired by dance, pleasure gardens, viola virtuosity and the pressures of graduating. Masquerade evokes the experience of London’s pleasure gardens and the music of English country dance and song. Isabel Tannenbaum won the school’s concerto competition by channeling the virtuosity required in Walton’s Viola Concerto. Glinka’s Kamarinskaya was the first orchestral work to be based on Russian folk songs, and Shostakovich wrote his first symphony to graduate, at the age of 19, only for the piece to make him an international teenage star.

The Accorda Trio was founded in 2018 by cellist Daniel Tressel, violinist Fangye Sun, and harpist Chen-Yu Huang. This unique combination sought to bring some of the most unknown gems in music history to the global audience, and explore this lush and colorful instrumentation. Since its inauguration, the Accorda Trio has performed repertoire that ranges from classical Haydn to the French giant, Ibert, and 21st-century composers such as Ricardo Lorenz. Their upcoming debut album will be released in 2024.

We feature Principal Cellist Moisés Molina in Rachmaninoff’s endless melody, the <i>Vocalise</i>. And writing in the year of the Russian Revolution, “bad boy” Prokofiev serves up a cheeky take on music’s classical roots.

The North German Philharmonic Orchestra Rostock is starting the New Year 2025 in a festive and pompous manner, crossing Europe from Tsarist Russia to the French metropolis of Paris at the beginning of the 20th century. The young Chilean conductor Eduardo Browne Salinas, 1st conductor at the Rostock Volkstheater, will wave the baton and lead the large orchestra through the exciting program, which will present the overture to Ruslan and Ludmilla and a waltz fantasy by Mikhail Glinka, music by Claude Debussy and Maurice Ravel, and, as the crowning finale, Modest Mussorgsky's Pictures at an Exhibition in the orchestral arrangement by Maurice Ravel.

Shostakovich composed his two cello concertos for his friend, the cellist and conductor Rostropovich. The virtuoso 1st and the introverted 2nd Rostropovitch had an international career, and great influence also on a violinist like Anne-Sophie Mutter. And here a connection was made: There is a direct line from Shostakovich to the cellist Daniel Müller-Schott, even though he was born the year after his death. Because through Anne-Sophie Mutter, Müller-Schott became a pupil of Rostropovitch. Not so that he could trudge to a classroom and play, no, he said when he was in Copenhagen a few years ago: Müller-Schott traveled after Rostropovich, because the master could think of calling late in the evening - and that was it to strike. You can imagine it, the young German and the old Russian in a hotel room in Germany somewhere... At the age of 15, Müller-Schott won the fine Tchaikovsky competition for young musicians in Moscow, and with his talent and good teachers, there was no long before he played with great orchestras and fine musicians; the list is long. Müller-Schott has also taken an interest in premiering new works for cello, and working with other art forms, in what seems like an eternal curiosity.

An in-depth introduction to The Rite will be presented by Maestro Alltop and CUSO musicians. Complementing Stravinsky’s masterpiece, the concert will open with a lively overture by Glinka. CUSO is pleased to welcome the talented young musicians of the East Central Illinois Youth Orchestra for a side-by-side performance of Mussorgsky’s thrilling orchestral poem, Night on the Bare Mountain.
