Our yearly birthday salute to Thelonious Monk can’t get any closer to the source than this, as we welcome Monk’s son, drummer T.S. Monk, celebrating the legacy of his father with this large ensemble tribute inspired by Monk Sr.’s legendary 1959 Town Hall concert. Originally conceived for his father’s 80th birthday, this project employs an expansion of Monk’s working sextet to a 10-piece ensemble and features a range of material from standards like “’Round Midnight” and “Crepuscule with Nellie” to lesser-known material like “Two Timer” and the Town Hall favorite “Little Rootie Tootie” — a piece inspired by and dedicated to T.S. by his father. The music, arranged by Monk and trumpeter Don Sickler, was released on Monk’s 1997 N2K Encoded Music release Monk on Monk with a staggering list of guest artists including Herbie Hancock, Wayne Shorter, Dianne Reeves, Arturo Sandoval, Geri Allen, Ron Carter, and Roy Hargrove.
