Hailed for reinventing the tuba, the flexibility and power of his sound has made Cross a major figure in London’s thriving jazz scene. His rise to fame started in 2016 with the release of Aspirations, bringing international attention and a Jazz FM nomination for best Jazz Newcomer.

Tuba players aren’t often described as charismatic stars, but over the past decade Theon Cross has emerged from London’s roiling jazz scene as an unstoppable creative force. Best known as a founding member of tenor saxophonist Shabaka Hutchings’ roots-jazz quartet Sons of Kemet, which nearly caused structural damage to the SFJAZZ Center back in 2019, Cross makes his Bay Area debut as a bandleader with a blazing young group straight out of London.
