Ravi, 60, spent the first quarter-century of his career acquiring a diverse array of experience and honing his own lustrous, harmonically slippery compositions. But in recent years he’s taken up the family mantle with a variety of projects and initiatives on and off the bandstand, championing the legacy of both his parents, John and Alice Coltrane.

2026 marks the centennial of two visionary architects of modern jazz: Miles Davis and John Coltrane. To celebrate their enduring legacy, two of today’s most innovative and influential bandleaders – Terence Blanchard and Ravi Coltrane – join forces for an exceptional concert.

Blanchard and Coltrane, both deeply connected to the spirit and lineage of these jazz icons, embody the very essence of creativity, futurism, transcendence, freedom – and the timeless ‘birth of cool’ that defined Miles and Trane’s artistry.

Saxophonist Ravi Coltrane and trumpeter Terence Blanchard share the Krannert Center stage to celebrate two pioneers of the great tradition of musical improvisation. Having recorded and performed with nearly every major figure in jazz in the last 40 years, these two 21st-century giants push the music while honoring the essence of the art form built by their predecessors. This program will explore the iconic work and influence of Miles Davis and John Coltrane to commemorate both centennials in 2026. The intensely dynamic collaboration will deliver an evening of reverently powerful and innovative music.

For these concerts, Blackman Santana's band will be joined by special guest saxophonist Ravi Coltrane.

Joined by Adam Rogers (guitar), Scott Colley (Music BFA 1988) (bass), and Jeff “Tain” Watts (drums), Coltrane will present an evening of improvisation and jazz performance as the capstone of his tenure as the Charlie Haden Artist in Residence at The Herb Alpert School of Music at California Institute of the Arts.

For this exclusive evening, saxophonist Ravi Coltrane explores the music of his legendary parents John Coltrane and Alice Coltrane.

Although Coltrane has delved into his father’s work on occasion, including serving as artistic director for SFJAZZ’s weeklong celebration of the 50th Anniversary of John Coltrane’s A Love Supreme in 2014, this performance is his serious re-examination of the singular work of both his parents. Coltrane is furthering his family legacy by “embracing jazz’s past only as a means to communicate his own modern-day voice.” (Okayplayer)

Ravi Coltrane: Cosmic Music with special guests

Coltrane’s powerful acoustic quartet with pianist David Virelles, bassist Dezron Douglas, and drummer Johnathan Blake honors the life and legacy of the saxophonist’s lifelong friend, mentor, and collaborator Pharoah Sanders who passed away in 2022. Joining them for this night of spiritual journeys and sonic exploration is a pair of very special guests, tenor master Joe Lovano and Sanders’ son, multi-instrumentalist Tomoki Sanders.

Ravi Coltrane settles into his week as Resident Artistic Director with a pair of cutting-edge bands that focus on his original compositions. His trio is a decidedly electrified distillation of the young band from his Cosmic Music project featuring keyboardist Gadi Lehavi and drummer Elé Howell. His veteran acoustic quartet, now dubbed Coltraxx, includes pianist David Virelles, bassist Dezron Douglas, and drummer Johnathan Blake.

Rather than a nostalgic reenactment, the concert offers a reimagining grounded in the legacy of Davis and Coltrane while remaining anchored in the present. True to jazz’s essence, Blanchard, Coltrane, and their ensemble embrace improvisation, invention, and emotional intensity, allowing the music to evolve in the moment throughout the evening.
