Taking part in the series of chorale cantata performances by Bach choirs from all over the world is the world-famous conductor and president of the Leipzig Bach Archive, Ton Koopman. With his Amsterdam Baroque Orchestra & Choir, he will present eight selected cantatas portraying the master chorale writer Bach at different periods in his career. The programme includes Bach’s earliest chorale cantata, »Christ lag in Todesbanden« (»Christ lay in the snares of death«), written in Mühlhausen around 1707, as well as the moving »Ach Gott, wie manches Herzeleid« (»Ah God, how much heartbreak«) from 1725 and the magnificent nine-verse chorale »In allen meinen Taten« (»In all my deeds«), which Bach composed in 1734.

“Erbarme dich, mein Gott ...” This monumental oratorio offers an extremely human perspective on Christ’s suffering, tugging at our heart strings. Hans-Christoph Rademann is an internationally respected Bach expert, in addition to being the founder of the world-renowned Dresdner Kammerchor. Together with the Antwerp Symphony Orchestra and some of the world’s leading soloists, he performs an extremely moving interpretation of this musical masterpiece. Laurence Equilbey makes her much-anticipated debut conducting the NSO, the University of Maryland Concert Choir, and an all-star lineup of soloists in Handel’s greatest oratorio celebration. Composed in 1741, Messiah is as potent today as it was more than 280 years ago, inspiring joy and wonder from both first-time listeners and those who return every year.
