Richard Strauss drew inspiration for his Salome Dance from Oscar Wilde's play, where Salome demands the head of John the Baptist, the only man who resisted her seduction. The erotically charged theme, intensity, and harmonic complexity naturally stirred controversy. The same holds true for Also sprach Zarathustra, based on Nietzsche's philosophical work, a piece surrounded by controversy along with Strauss's symphonic poem. Nevertheless, Strauss crafted an absolute masterpiece expressing his vision of earthly life. Alban Berg's Violin Concerto ‘To the Memory of an Angel' was dedicated to the tragically young Manon Gropius, daughter of Alma Mahler and Walter Gropius, showcasing how love and death can be closer than one might think. Berg poignantly translates the tragedy into an intense concerto, skillfully performed by Dutch violinist Simone Lamsma.

The melancholy in their music reflects their personal struggles, yet hope resonates. Shostakovich's Piano Quintet, revered for its depth, innovation, and contrasting emotions, showcases each instrument uniquely contributing to the texture and narrative. With the brief Schicksalslied, Johannes Brahms composed one of the highlights of Romantic choral music, evoking the tragic atmosphere of a poem where Hölderlin sings of destiny in a few words. Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart unintentionally created his own requiem mass: he wrote the Requiem upon the request of an anonymous commissioner but passed away before its completion. Based on Mozart's notes, his pupil Frans Xavier Süssmayr prepared the iconic masterpiece for eternity, featuring unmistakable echoes of Bach's contrapuntal virtuosity and the influence of Händel. Honorary conductor Philippe Herreweghe is globally recognized for this period. Alongside the Collegium Vocale Gent, the Antwerp Symphony Orchestra prepares for an undoubtedly memorable tour across various Flemish cities.

With his vibrant Hungarian dances, Johannes Brahms transports us to the charming countryside of Hungary. The country's folk music served as an endless source of inspiration for numerous composers. Although Brahms' melodies carry a folk touch, they are uniquely his own. Like many Romantic contemporaries, he infused an exotic flair into the symphonic tradition. Béla Bartók also delved into the roots of Hungarian music. Unlike Brahms, his music occasionally grates, aiming to capture the peculiarities of folk music. Bartók blends refinement and a raw style into a dazzling interplay of sounds. A lively, energetic program for a delightful Sunday kickoff.

The Antwerp Symphony Orchestra and the Royal Museum of Fine Arts Antwerp (KMSKA) join forces with many partners to pay homage to Ensor as an all-round artist. For one week, we celebrate the opening of the exhibition "Ensor's Boldest Dreams" at the museum.

Inspired by Flemish painters, Flor Alpaerts composed the extravagant James Ensor suite. In this Ensor year, the Antwerp Symphony Orchestra pays tribute to the Ostend master, coinciding with an exhibition at the KMSKA. Erich Wolfgang Korngold's Violin Concerto, infused with quotes from his iconic film scores, reflects his Hollywood success after fleeing to America in the 1930s. Young prodigy Benjamin Beilman interprets this delightful concerto with folk nuances, reminiscent of Korngold's Czech roots. Béla Bartók, fleeing to America during World War II, crafted his Concerto for Orchestra with an intuitive, even 'brutal' style, featuring orchestral sections in a vibrant composition with fluid melodies and a sophisticated dialogue.

This colourful concert programme beautifully showcases the timeless allure of oriental fairy tales. Inspired by the tales of One Thousand and One Nights, Danish composer Christian Frederik Emil Horneman initially composed a concert overture before deciding to create a full opera around the character of Aladdin.

This year, we welcome a top star who has graced numerous opera stages: Latvian soprano Kristine Opolais promises vocal fireworks, performing a selection of the finest opera arias. The French composer George Onslow, composing in the shadow of Beethoven, was grappling, like his famous contemporary, with deafness. His was caused by a stray bullet to the head during a walk. Onslow translated his experience from his sickbed into music, giving evocative titles to his string quintet such as Fever and Delirium, Convalescence, and Cure. The listener seems to witness a story unfolding through sounds; this is pure program music. The same applies to Beethoven’s Horn Sonata in F, one of the key works in the chamber music repertoire for the horn arranged for string quintet.

As is customary annually, Antwerp Symphony concludes its summer break with a concert at the renowned Concertgebouw Amsterdam, a familiar venue. Presenting Dvořák's Eighth Symphony and Mozart's virtuosic Piano Concerto No. 22, the orchestra showcases two masterpieces spanning over a century. Esteemed pianist Yeol Eum Son, well-versed in Mozart's music, joins energetic conductor Eduardo Strausser in guiding us through this refined concerto.

From July 27 to August 3, 2024, the Collegium Vocale Crete Senesi festival presents a diverse program of seventeen concerts in the picturesque setting of Tuscany. Organizer Philippe Herreweghe, in collaboration with the Antwerp Symphony Orchestra, features chamber music performances showcasing the finest repertoire. In 2022, Antwerp Symphony's brass ensemble captivated audiences with a masterful rendition of Bach's iconic Goldberg Variations at AMUZ, uniquely reimagined for brass quintet by American composer Arthur Frackenpohl. This festival sees the quintet once again shining with this almost mythical variation series.

The Antwerp Symphony Orchestra heads to Antwerp’s Cathedral of Our Lady for a programme that highlights the building’s superb acoustics. Against the backdrop of Rubens’s majestic altarpieces, you get to enjoy music inspired by the works of other master painters: On a landscape by Turner by the Belgian composer Jacqueline Fontyn and Ottorino Respighi’s Botticelli triptych. The majestic cathedral vaults will also resonate to the sound of the Romanza for violin and orchestra by Antwerp composer Flor Alpaerts. Finally, the orchestra will conjure up a seascape with Britten’s Four Sea Interludes and Passacaglia. An atmospheric encounter of creative minds in a unique setting!

The string octet offers the best of both worlds, combining the full resonance of a string orchestra with the soloistic virtuosity and clarity of a chamber music ensemble. Max Bruch, an incurable romantic, composed his swansong, the String Octet in B-Flat Major, towards the end of his life. A few years later, Dimitri Shostakovich would embrace modernity in his Prelude and Scherzo, opus 11. Reinhold Glière’s String Octet in D Major strikes a compromise between the two. While the fiery temperament is indisputably Russian, the lyricism harks back to German romanticism. Enjoy three key early 20th-century chamber pieces.

The Ghent-born playwright Maurice Maeterlinck is the only Belgian to have won the Nobel Prize for Literature to date. His work has inspired many composers: Debussy, Schönberg and Sibelius, among others, have all set his symbolist play Pelléas et Mélisande to music. The most popular version is Gabriel Fauré’s, who composed a poetic score for this wondrous fairytale about two star-crossed lovers. The actors will bring the fantastical world of Maeterlinck and Fauré to life on the stage of the Queen Elisabeth Hall. A unique performance in which the Antwerp Symphony gives the centuries-old combination of theatre and music a new lease of life.

Since September 2012, opMaatorkest has offered children in Antwerp’s primary schools an introduction to classical music, the opportunity to learn to play an instrument together, and develop their talent for one hour a week. opMaatorkest is part of the primary school curriculum over a two-year period. At the end of the school year, the future orchestra members gather on the stage of the Queen Elisabeth Hall for an amazing closing concert.

During the last week of the Queen Elisabeth Competition, the laureates withdraw to the Queen Elisabeth Chapel. Their final farewell to Belgian audiences comes in the form of the traditional laureates concert in the Queen Elisabeth Hall, during which they perform seminal milestones from the violin repertoire. Don’t miss this appointment with the future and an opportunity to see a new generation of star violinists at work after their defining performances during this world-renowned competition, before they embark on an international career!

The Netherlands Philharmonic Orchestra has been steadily carving out a niche for itself, under the baton of charismatic chief conductor Lorenzo Viotti. They will be joined on stage by Lisa Batiashvili and Maximilian Hornung for Brahm’s Double Concerto. The two superstars are used to performing together and are exceptionally well attuned to each other. Viotti will then lead the orchestra in a performance of Dvořák’s Symphony No. 7, in which the sounds and spirit of his native Bohemia are more apparent than in his other works. How do you deal with the musical legacy of composers who preceded you? Even talented composers like Johannes Brahms grappled with this problem. Brahms spent fifteen years working on his Symphony No. 1, in hopes of rivalling Beethoven’s masterpiece. The tense opening, the subtle anticipatory silences, and languorous melodies helped seal the reputation of his First as a highlight of the romantic repertoire. Dvořák also sought the recognition and approbation of his precursors. With his Violin Concerto, he provided the late- romantic innovation that the genre so direly needed, becoming an audience favourite in the process. Star violinist Midori is the perfect soloist for this poetic, demanding tour de force.

Anyone who has had the pleasure of experiencing Kian Soltani’s talent live will definitely want to see and hear him perform Tchaikovsky’s Variations on a Rococo Theme. Power and emotion: just the right programme for emeritus conductor Jaap van Zweden. After reading Wagner’s death notice, Anton Bruckner committed the first notes of his Symphony No. 7 to paper. His musical tribute to the Meister aller Meister was a tremendous success, from the premiere onwards. The work’s epic proportions, the grandiose orchestration, and the moving melodies all combine to make Bruckner’s Seventh one of his most popular works. Enjoy the ripple of emotions in the Adagio and the fierce power of the Finale in this highlight of the romantic repertoire.

Volumes have been written on the friendship between Schumann and Brahms. Both composers represent a softer, gentler romanticism. But there are differences too: while Brahms always succeeded in maintaining the balance between his intellect and his emotions, Schumann’s troubled mind produced darker works. After his death, Brahms composed the monumental Piano Quartet No. 2 in A Major, a perfect example of romantic Weltschmerz. The extended, melancholic melodies are reminiscent of Schubert’s work, who demonstrates in his String Trio in B flat major why he is called the master of introspection. A programme featuring some undisputed masterpieces of the chamber music repertoire, by world-class pianist Jeremy Denk and musicians of the Antwerp Symphony.

A piano virtuoso, composer, and successful author: Jeremy Denk is all that and more. He is like a modern-day Franz Liszt, a man of multiple talents who was the prototype of the romantic homo universalis. In his Wanderer-Fantasie, Liszt reworked Schubert’s eponymous piano suite into an exuberant orchestral work. And while we are on the subject of exuberant: in the twentieth century, Igor Stravinsky’s The Rite of Spring caused quite a revolution in Parisian music circles. Get ready for a memorable evening, under the baton of dynamic Polish conductor Krzysztof Urbański.

In Every Good Boy Does Fine: A Love Story in Music Lessons, world-famous classical pianist Jeremy Denk describes his quest for the essence of classical music. Whereas most people equate classical music with majestic concert halls and bravura performances, Denk takes us behind the scenes, showing the daily reality behind all this splendour. He delves deeper into the classical works that formed him – from Mozart to Brahms – and explains the essence of music, based on the three aspects of music, namely melody, harmony and rhythm. Denk shares the most meaningful lessons in his life, in lively, imaginative prose, from a dedicated music teacher in secondary school, the teachings of a local conductor or even the legacy of some great classical musicians. He also reminds us to never forget about what music has to offer: succour, entertainment, distraction and, above all, a refuge.

We Have a Dream is a project with a universal message, that is more relevant than ever in light of current events. A tribute to human rights, and their champions!

Shostakovich’s symphonies are milestones in the symphonic repertoire, all equally dramatic with that same rebellious, ironic undertone. His last symphony, Symphony No. 15, has a more introspective quality. Many of his contemporaries likened it to a meditation on life: the cheerful first movement represents the innocence of childhood, whereas the last, unsettling darker movement refers to adulthood and perhaps the end of life. In the piano trio for piano and two percussionists, his Fifteenth is reduced to its essence. Shostakovich has never sounded so pure, so transparent. Schubert’s Notturno is another work of brooding intensity. This serene gem, which was first performed after the composer’s death, really comes into its own in the stunning setting of AMUZ.

The Baroque master Georg Friedrich Händel composed several phenomenal arias for the highest male singing voice. Just the perfect repertoire for countertenor Bejun Mehta, who will also be conducting the orchestra on this occasion. Like Händel, Johann Christian Bach made a career for himself in 18th- century cosmopolitan London, with compositions that bridge the gap between the Baroque and classicism. It was there that he also met Mozart, whose overture to Mitridate is very similar to the work of the London Bach. Twelve years later, the young Mozart demonstrated his maturity in his Haffner Symphony, gradually carving out a niche for himself as an independent composer. Explore the music of this tipping point in the history of music in the Queen Elisabeth Hall!

Over the centuries, the Wiener Symphoniker has developed into one of the world’s leading orchestras for the symphonic repertoire, under the baton of such iconic conductors as Richard Strauss and Herbert von Karajan. As of September 2024, Petr Popelka will also be in that lineup, as he becomes the orchestra's 18th chief conductor. As a soloist in the Queen Elisabeth Hall, Gautier Capuçon will demonstrate his exceptional finesse on the cello, in a performance of Dvořák’s Cello Concerto, one of the all-time greatest works for cello, engaging in an in-depth dialogue with the orchestra. Richard Strauss had a knack for bringing fictional characters to life in symphonic poems, such as Don Juan and Till Eulenspiegels lustige Streiche. Enjoy an evening of melodious stories, with the cello in the starring role!

In his Carnaval, a work for piano solo, Robert Schumann depicts various characters such as Pierrot and Harlequin as well as his fellow composers, such as Schubert, Chopin and Paganini. Maurice Ravel transcribed the rich colour palette of this imaginative piano work for the orchestra. The German composer Hans Zender also drew on Schumann’s work for inspiration. His famous Fantasie opus 17 served as a starting point for Zender’s Schumann-Fantasie, in which he combines the 19th and 20th centuries into one majestic orchestral work. In his Mysteries of the Macabre, György Ligeti pays an absurdist homage to his own career, replete with dark humour and exuberant cynicism, with a starring role for soprano Katrien Baerts. A unique experience and a treat for your eyes and ears!

Gustav Mahler’s Symphony No. 4 is the last of his Wunderhorn symphonies, drawing on his song cycle in which he set poems from Des Knaben Wunderhorn, a German folk poetry collection to music. One of these songs, Das himmlische Leben, forms the core of his fourth symphony: the melody re-emerges as a motif throughout the symphony, culminating in a superb soprano solo in the work’s grand finale. Prepare to be overwhelmed by the stunning voice of soprano Christiane Karg and this highlight of Mahler’s fascinating career during this Sunday morning concert!

In her series of Mahler symphonies, chief conductor Elim Chan has chosen to present the enchantingly beautiful Symphony No. 4 this season. In this popular symphony, Mahler combines intimate melodies with his astounding orchestration. Like Mahler, Erich Wolfgang Korngold spans the late Romantic period and modernism. This wunderkind would later go on to become one of Hollywood’s most influential composers. His Einfache Lieder demonstrate his consummate lyricism and originality. When the Czech Philharmonic gave its first concert in 1896, the conductor was none other than Antonín Dvořák himself. In recent years, Semyon Bychkov is the orchestra’s internationally acclaimed chief conductor, having earned lots of praise, in particular for his performances of Dvořák’s works. Bertrand Chamayou is the soloist in the virtuoso piano concerto, in which the composer reveals his most poetic side. The programme ends with the orchestra’s performance of the unrivalled Symphony No. 9, in which the composer conveys his experiences in America. Hans-Christoph Rademann is an internationally respected Bach expert, in addition to being the founder of the world-renowned Dresdner Kammerchor. Together with the Antwerp Symphony Orchestra and some of the world’s leading soloists, he performs an extremely moving interpretation of this musical masterpiece. The City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra developed into one of Europe’s leading orchestras in recent decades. In 2022, the audience in Antwerp’s Queen Elisabeth Hall treated the orchestra and its electrifying chief conductor Mirga Gražinytė-Tyla to a standing ovation that went on for several minutes. This year, the orchestra’s new chief conductor Kazuki Yamada is travelling to Antwerp to introduce himself with a phenomenal symphonic programme, which includes Berlioz’s Symphonie fantastique, an epic work for a huge orchestra. An excellent combination with the golden hall’s superb acoustics!

Twice a year, young musicians between the ages of 14 and 26 years show off their talent and skills in the Queen Elisabeth Hall. Every concert of the Antwerp Youth Orchestra (Antwerps Jeugdorkest, AJO) is always an unforgettable experience, both for the audience and the musicians.

For this extremely atmospheric programme, we will be joined by German star pianist Martin Helmchem. Despite the relative simplicity of the piano part, Mendelssohn’s Piano Concerto No. 2 is a popular work with both concertgoers and musicians. Like Mendelssohn, Brahms is a romantic icon. Whereas the former, however, is synonymous with boundless energy, the latter is mostly remembered for this mature work. He apparently wrote his Symphony No. 2 during a holiday in the south of Austria, drawing on the stunning landscapes for inspiration. The title ‘Pastorale’ is aptly chosen: the work opens on a cheerful note, sweeping you off to the country.

Once upon a time ... there was a little boy ... For centuries, children and their parents have been enthralled by the adventures of Pinocchio and Gepetto. Nico Sturm will interpret the wooden protagonist, learning that in order to stay on the right path you need to take the odd deviation now and then. The orchestra and actors are preparing a riveting, cheerful performance for young and not so young music lovers, to Gioacchino Rossini’s wonderfully Italian music. And unlike Pinocchio, they will be telling the truth!

Venezuelan musician Gabriela Montero is a piano superstar. She improvises, composes and succeeds in charming her way into the hearts of audiences around the world with her unrivalled flair. Together with the Antwerp Symphony and Elim Chan, Montero will perform her lively Piano Concerto, in which she blends the rich rhythms of Latin America with European music, to create “a dance of joy and darkness”. Lena Frank’s heart also beats to the tune of these two cultural identities. In her Three Latin American Dances, she references the work of such composers as Ginastera and Bernstein. The latter’s West Side Story would go on to cause a revolution in music and theatre genres. Enjoy a concert programme with lots of symphonic dance music and some vibrant Latin energy!

The Staatskapelle Dresden is probably the world’s oldest symphony orchestra and has been one of the world’s leading orchestras for almost 500 years. Acclaimed pianist and conductor András Schiff is renowned for his Mozart performances, in particular. On this occasion, he will be performing Mozart’s wonderfully lively Piano Concerto No. 23. Mendelssohn composed his Symphony No. 4 after a long voyage through Italy. His impressions of Italian art and architecture, the vast countryside and the exuberant village fetes resonate in this energetic symphony. The orchestra opens with a Baroque landmark: Bach's Brandenburg Concerto No 5. A programme with considerable appeal combined with the genius of these consummate performers: all the makings of a memorable concert!

There is only one way to learn what a symphony orchestra sounds like: by sitting in the middle of it. During Double Play, you will first be seated on the stage, among the orchestra’s musicians, sensing how the score comes to life around you. Afterwards, you move off stage, to the comfy seats of the Queen Elisabeth Hall, after which you enjoy the same piece again, as intended by the composer. A unique introduction to a composition in just 30 minutes and the perfect way to spend your lunchtime break.

An evening of Latin American rhythms and flair! The atmosphere is always laidback during the Antwerp Symphony Orchestra’s Club Concerts. The evening starts with a short programme featuring highlights of classical music, in a casual ambience, with humorous introductions by an MC. On this occasion, comedian Michael van Peel will do the honours. Master improviser Gabriela Montero will provide pianistic fireworks on the piano, with improvisations and performing her own work. The evening ends with an afterparty in the lounge!

Eugène Ysaÿe was considered one of the leading violinists of his era. The Belgian composer’s Chant d’hiver conjures up a sparkling, winter setting, followed by the song of the nightingale in Stravinsky’s Le chant du Rossignol. The Russian composer originally wrote this for a ballet based on Hans Christian’s Andersen fairytale The Nightingale. The morning concert ends with Respighi’s festive Pini di Roma, a tribute to the eternal city’s stunning pine trees. All these masterpieces bring the beauty of nature to life in music ... Can you think of a better way to start your Sunday morning?

The Antwerp Symphony will pay tribute to the deep connection between nature and music under the baton of Jun Märkl. Vaughan Williams’s The lark ascending is an absolute masterpiece for violin and will be performed on this occasion by Elisabeth Competition laureate Akiko Suwanai. The winter splendour of Ysaÿes Chant d’hiver will be supplemented with the healing song of the nightingale in Stravinsky’s Le Chant du rossignol and the festive Italian magnificence of Respighi’s Pini di Roma. Cosmic force is the main thrust of Uzu, Toshio Hosokawa’s experiential work, which was inspired by traditional Japanese shô music. The orchestra is divided into several groups, both on and off stage, among the audience. That way the audience is surrounded by music: a memorable, immersive experience.

One, two, three, one, two, three, and dance! In Empress Sisi’s lifetime, all of Vienna danced to the Strauss family’s cheerful waltzes, upbeat polkas and rousing marches. On this occasion, the actors of LAZARUS don their glad rags, shine their shoes, and tune their violins for a hilarious tale about what is surely the most flamboyant family in the history of music.

Rachmaninov is mainly known for his famous monumental concertos and symphonies, but his chamber music is equally moving. His Piano Trio No. 1 has all the allure of a miniature piano concerto. Dvořák’s String Sextet in A Major is a remarkable series of character pieces, alternating between melancholy and exuberant dances. Both artists composed these works at the beginning of their magnificent careers. Who better to interpret these superb works than the musicians of the Antwerp Symphony Orchestra, together with the promising young musicians of the Queen Elisabeth Music Chapel and Elisabeth Competition laureate Bomsori Kim in the magnificent setting of AMUZ.

This superstar and central guest of the Elisabeth weekend will unleash her energy on Tchaikovsky’s moving Violin Concerto. Like his compatriot Tchaikovsky, Shostakovich drew on his personal experiences to compose his most successful music. His Symphony No. 10 is an intriguing work, imbued with musical irony, resonating with energy. Enjoy a world-class violinist in a programme full of Russian grandeur, just the perfect match for conductor Eliahu Inbal.

After her participation in the 2015 Queen Elisabeth Competition for violin, Bomsori Kim shot to international fame. The South Korean violinist is in high demand worldwide as a soloist, thanks to her powerful performances of great masterpieces of the violin repertoire with leading orchestras. During the Elisabeth weekend, you have a unique opportunity to hear the acclaimed violinist perform several magnificent chamber music pieces, together with musicians of the Antwerp Symphony Orchestra and the Queen Elisabeth Music Chapel, namely Rachmaninov’s Piano Trio No. 1 and Dvořák’s String Sextet No. 1.

The Royal Scottish National Orchestra has been one of Britain’s leading orchestras for several decades, collaborating with such conductors as Neeme Järvi and Marin Alsop. Our own chief conductor Elim Chan is also the orchestra’s first guest director. The soloist on this occasion is the Australian violinist Ray Chen, the laureate of the 2009 Queen Elisabeth Competition, who has become one of the world’s most in-demand violinists since then. He will perform Tchaikovsky’s phenomenal Violin Concerto, which is widely regarded as the most beautiful concerto of its kind in the classical repertoire thanks to the brilliant melodies. This will be followed by more virtuoso violin sounds in Rimsky-Korsakov’s Sheherazade. A superb orchestral suite that succeeds in conjuring up the world in the fairytales of Arabian Nights.

Originally Beethoven’s Symphony No. 3 was supposed to be dedicated to Napoleon Bonaparte. When the latter crowned himself Emperor of France, Beethoven was so dismayed that he scratched out Napoleon’s name on the title page so fiercely that it left a hole in the paper. The work soon became famous under its new title, Eroica. Besides symphonies, Beethoven also composed several works for the stage. His overture to Coriolanus reveals how intensely dramatic his music is, even without text. Star cellist Nicolas Altstaedt has always enjoyed the emotional eloquence of Schuman’s Cello Concerto. The German romantic composer’s work reaches new heights thanks to the analytical skills of honorary conductor Philippe Herreweghe, an expert when it comes to performances of works by either composer.

Ring in the New Year with a glamorous New Year’s concert! The musicians of the Antwerp Symphony Orchestra have a treat in store for you, inviting Maria Bengtsson to join them on stage. The Swedish soprano is primarily known for her performances in operas by Mozart and Strauss. Together with the orchestra she will perform a varied, festive programme with the occasional nod to the traditional New Year’s concert in Vienna. Baroque specialist Nicholas McGegan curates a heartwarming Christmas program, featuring excerpts from the festive Music for the Royal Fireworks. Georg Friedrich Händel composed this suite to commemorate the Peace of Aix-la-Chapelle, ending the War of Austrian Succession. Soprano Sunhae Im delights with her satin voice in perhaps the most famous baroque aria: the poignant and immortal Lascia ch’io pianga. Engaging in dialogue with jubilant trumpets, Im performs arias by Bach and Händel. Stepping briefly outside the Baroque, Franz Schubert allows the renowned soprano to converse with the clarinet. Michael Haydn, Joseph's younger brother, paints a charming Christmas scene with his Pastorello. Begin the festive season with baroque splendor in the comfortable ambiance and sparkling acoustics of the Queen Elisabeth Hall.

Austria and France join hands in a festive celebration: traditional waltzes and polkas abound, complemented by the heartwarming music of Berlioz and Offenbach, creating a lively atmosphere. This symphonic poem, rich in imagination, has been widely used in film and TV soundtracks. Renowned violinist For his part, top violinist Christian Tetzlaff, a staunch defender of the lesser-known repertoire, opts for Karol Szymanowski's exotic First Violin Concerto. The Polish composer wrote it at a time when his musical language was evolving from late romantic to more impressionistic. The optimism of Szymanowski's concerto contrasts sharply with the Sixth symphony composed by Tchaikovsky shortly before his death. Did he feel his end of life approaching? It seems that way: the passionate Adagio sounds like a farewell to life. Today, this epic symphony is celebrated as one of the most poignant and profound pieces in musical history.

Conductor Martyn Brabbins, at home in both symphonic and brass band genres, returns to Antwerp, where he served as the Antwerp Symphony Orchestra's first guest conductor until 2015. Celebrating the Festival Brass Band's 25th anniversary in 2025, the Belgian premiere of Gavin Higgins' vibrant Concerto grosso for brass band and orchestra awaits. Higgins describes it as a 'love letter to the world of brass bands.' Antwerp Symphony Orchestra also explores classical territory with Edward Elgar's Enigma Variations, offering 14 variations portraying friends with a mix of humor and seriousness. Join us for this delightful musical ode to friendship.

Beethoven's First Symphony is often termed a 'farewell to the eighteenth century.' Though still classically rooted, it bears the composer's spirited and heroic signature. Paired with the Second Piano Concerto, the symphony bridges into the nineteenth century, where Beethoven fully embraced his romantic musical language. His music is often labeled 'heroic,' inspired by historical and mythological figures of heroism. The Prometheus Overture, depicting the demi-god who stole fire from the gods for humanity, exemplifies this with a triumphant celebration. Experience Beethoven thrice with the Antwerp Symphony Orchestra and conductor Philippe Herreweghe, an authority in this genre. Dutch pianist Hannes Minnaar, acclaimed for his complete recording of Beethoven's concertos, joins for an exceptional rendition of Beethoven at his finest.

In the midst of the concert season, Antwerp Symphony presents a Season Event where central themes such as the flow of time and the tension between life and survival are further explored. Music often creates a sense of space, but in fact, it is nothing but time made audible. And if anything can be said about time, it is that it continuously, even mercilessly, ticks away. Yet, music sometimes raises questions about our linear understanding of time. Precisely because music unfolds in time, it possesses the unique ability to manipulate our sense of time. This understanding was well grasped by musical minimalists such as Terry Riley, Philip Glass, and John Adams. Through the obsessive repetition of the same musical motif, paradoxically, their music creates a sense of stillness. The Season Event deepens this musical thought and links it to a universal and yet burning contemporary theme surrounding the limits of human knowledge.

Introductory symposium: The resonance of minimal music

John Adams' opera Doctor Atomic tells the story of the development of the atomic bomb by Robert Oppenheimer. The original opera from 2005 does not so much recount the historical events, but focuses on the motivations and psychology of the involved individuals (Robert Oppenheimer, Kitty Oppenheimer, and a handful of scientists from the Manhattan Project). Additionally, the symphony that Adams composed a few years later based on material from his opera illustrates how unchecked thirst for knowledge can drive humanity to its own destruction. Philip Glass' Icarus at the Edge of Time, on the other hand, tells the story of a boy who travels to a black hole out of insatiable curiosity. Michaël Pas serves as the narrator in a musical story where the mythological figure of Icarus is redefined: his longing for the unattainable does not cause him to fall from the sky, but allows him to experience one of Einstein's greatest insights. Acrobat Robin Witt takes on the role of Icarus, turning this evening into a spectacular event. As a dramatic counterbalance to Adams' Doctor Atomic Symphony, Glass' Icarus at the Edge of Time offers a positive perspective on humanity's drive to test the limits of knowledge and its own impermanence.

A midnight concert featuring the wildly popular work Recomposed by Max Richter: Vivaldi's The Four Seasons brings the Seasonal Happening to a close. With his fresh interpretation of Vivaldi's baroque masterpiece, Richter demonstrates how the interpretation of music is constantly evolving and has nothing to fear from the passage of time.

The timeless theme of death and transience has inspired composers throughout history. A narrator guides us through music ranging from Haydn and Verdi to Wagner, Mussorgsky, and Popper. Belgian composer Peeters completes the program with a suite written specifically for the trombone quartet. From hopeful and celestial to dark and ominous, this intimate thematic concert is a poignant reflection on the flow of time.

After successful tenures with the Prague Radio Symphony Orchestra and the Norwegian National Radio Orchestra, conductor Petr Popelka becomes the new chief conductor of one of the world's finest orchestras, the Vienna Symphony, starting from 2024-2025—a truly noteworthy appointment. In this concert, he collaborates with the acclaimed pianist Alexandre Kantorow, dubbed the reincarnation of Franz Liszt by the American Fanfare Magazine. Kantorow's stellar career took off with a Grand Prix at the Tchaikovsky Competition in Moscow, followed by performances worldwide in prestigious venues like the Berlin Philharmonie, Verbier Festival, and the Cité de la Musique in Paris.
