When Renaud Capuçon and Semyon Bychkov last appeared together with the CSO, sparks flew. The French violinist “made you aware of a searching musical intellect supported by a superb technical arsenal” (Chicago Tribune). The parties reunite in Saint-Saëns’ brilliant Third Violin Concerto. Framing the program are Dvořák’s boisterous portrait of a street carnival and Brahms’ noble and heart-rending Fourth Symphony.

Always a favorite of Cleveland audiences, the Labèques return to perform the Martinů’s tour de force concerto for two pianos, full of jazzy inflections and high-speed fireworks, pausing only in the slow movement for moments of serene calm. The concert concludes with Tchaikovsky’s iconic Romeo and Juliet, whose sweeping melodies perfectly evoke the breathless passion of the two young lovers.

Much honored and much recorded conductor Semyon Bychkov, who has been obsessed with Mahler since his early years, shares his insights into the multi-faceted world of Mahler’s Seventh Symphony. Sometimes called “The Song of the Night”—because two of the five movements are titled Nachtmusik—the work is known for Mahler’s use of unusual scoring, including guitar, mandolin, tenor horn, even an early example of Bartók’s “snap pizzicato.” The symphonic journey concludes with a roaring rollercoaster ride of a finale.
