New York City is poised to host a thrilling musical celebration featuring the European Union Youth Orchestra, Emanuel Ax and Michael Tilson Thomas, and a unique program of Bach, Mahler, and Symphonic Metamorphosis. These events, centered around Gustav Mahler's magnificent works, promise a rich and diverse experience for all music lovers.

Conductor Michael Tilson Thomas — “a podium hero” (The New York Times) — opens the season with Emanuel Ax as the soloist in Mozart’s Piano Concerto No. 14, a spirited work with beautiful interplay between the piano and orchestra. The concert concludes with Mahler’s monumental Fifth Symphony, including the Adagietto, composed as an encoded love letter to his wife .

Ken-David Masur conducts this program curated by NY Phil Musicians, featuring Hindemith’s Symphonic Metamorphosis, which bursts with energy from the first bar. “You may hear a parade go by, or a funeral, or you may recognize the passage of those who are making Civil Rights demands,” Duke Ellington said of his Harlem. Works by Mahler and Richard Strauss showcase their respective early styles, and a World Premiere by Augusta Read Thomas rounds out the program.

Beethoven’s Seventh Symphony captivates with​ dance-like rhythmic vitality and ​mournful emotional depth. Víkingur Ólafsson is the soloist in Brahms’s First Piano Concerto, which seamlessly combines solo instrument and orchestra in a work of lyricism and majesty. Manfred Honeck, whose interpretations of orchestral classics have been called “enthralling” (The New York Times)​, is on the podium. 

Beethoven’s Seventh and Víkingur Ólafsson

Gil Shaham — whose playing has been called “haunting and utterly beautiful” (The Strad) — is the soloist in Mendelssohn’s Violin Concerto. Schoenberg’s symphonic poem Pelleas and Melisande is in the Romantic style, predating the composer’s atonal innovations. Composer and conductor Matthias Pintscher opens the program with the US Premiere of his own Neharot, a tribute to those who suffered in the pandemic.

Carlos Simon’s Four Black American Dances pays homage to the wide range of Black American dance traditions while Nathalie Joachim’s newly-penned cello concerto written for Seth Parker Woods honors the transformation of African fashion. Driving rhythms of David Baker’s Kosbro are followed by William Grant Still's Autochthonous Symphony, which portrays, in his words, “the fusion of musical cultures in North America.”

Looking at the many experiences of the African diaspora informs how we perceive ourselves and others, and it gives us clues as to how we might move forward — collectively.

Young People’s Concert: The Future Is Unity

NY Phil Principal Clarinet Anthony McGill is the soloist in Mozart’s Clarinet Concerto, a showcase for the instrument’s expressive ability. Tchaikovsky’s Sixth Symphony stirs the soul with​ rich melodies and dramatic intensity. Rafael Payare conducts this concert, which begins with Sofia Gubaidulina’s tone poem inspired by Miloš Macourek’s The Little Piece of Chalk, an allegory of artistic perseverance​​​.

Ravel’s tribute to the Viennese waltz accelerates with chaotic energy​. Richard Strauss composed Metamorphosen as a memorial for a culture ravaged by World War II. Violinist Leila Josefowicz, a champion of living composers, is the soloist in Luca Francesconi’s flamenco-inspired concerto; the composer describes the Duende of the title as “a subterranean force of unheard-of power that escapes rational control.”

Santtu-Matias Rouvali conducts a program exploring the stages of life. Julia Wolfe calls music her fountain of youth, and her piece by that name offers, writes the composer, “a rhythmic, high-energy swim.” Soprano Miah Persson sings Richard Strauss’s Four Last Songs, the composer’s farewell to his life and artistic journey. Sibelius’s Fifth, commissioned to celebrate his 50th birthday, ends in staggering triumph.

Composer and conductor John Adams leads a program that honors modern American land- and cityscapes, from his own jazz-inflected take on film noir’s gritty sound world, through Gabriella Smith’s tribute to the Northern California coastline, to Copland’s evocative depiction of a deserted cityscape at night.

Yefim Bronfman takes the stage to perform Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No. 3, a work that begins with dramatic intensity, turns to deep meditation, and ends with a rollicking, dance-like finale. Nielsen’s Symphony No. 5 is a study in contrasts, with the power to transport the listener on an exploration of darkness vs. light, good vs. evil, and dreams vs. deeds. Paavo Järvi conducts.

Pianist Yunchan Lim, the youngest-ever winner of the Van Cliburn Competition, plays Chopin’s Second Concerto. Rachmaninoff’s Symphony No. 2 shows the composer’s gift for melody, from its brooding introduction to impassioned heights. In his NY Phil debut, Kazuki Yamada also conducts the US Premiere of Dai Fujikura’s Entwine, a musical metaphor for vital human connection.

Shostakovich’s Symphony No. 10 ​is performed alongside​ William Kentridge’s Oh To Believe in Another World, a stop-motion film that explores the composer’s complex relationship with the Soviet regime. Another side of Shostakovich is on display in his Festive Overture. Concertmaster Frank Huang is the soloist in Prokofiev’s Second Violin Concerto. Keri-Lynn Wilson conducts this season highlight.

Handel’s classic setting of Biblical texts is marked by the opera composer’s knack for drama and storytelling, and his writing for the human voice reaches dizzying heights of expression, ​sustained​​​ by iconic melodies from the Orchestra. These performances feature a stunning cast of soloists, ​​Musica Sacra, and Baroque specialist Ton Koopman on the podium.

Buddy was accidentally transported to the North Pole as a toddler and raised among Santa’s elves. Unable to shake the feeling that he doesn’t fit in, the adult Buddy travels to New York City, in full elf uniform, in search of his real father. This holiday season, rediscover this heartwarming classic as John Debney’s wonderful score is played live by the NY Phil while the film plays on the big screen.

Richard Strauss’s Also sprach Zarathustra became famous thanks to 2001: A Space Odyssey, but there is much more to this tone poem. Inspired by Nietzsche’s book of the same name, Strauss uses orchestral forces to explore our place in the universe. Isabel Leonard sings Berlioz’s song cycle of love and longing. Samy Moussa’s Elysium depicts the Greek mythological heroes’ final resting place. Kevin John Edusei conducts.

Joshua Bell is the soloist in Dvořák’s Violin Concerto, alive with elements of Czech folk music, especially in its dancing finale. On the second half of the program, Tchaikovsky grapples with fate in the dramatic contrasts of his Fourth Symphony. Daniele Rustioni — praised for his “immaculate sense of pace, tension, and drama” (The Guardian) — conducts in his NY Phil debut.

On the heels of her tremendous success at the Bayreuth Festival, Nathalie Stutzmann — one of today’s leading Wagner interpreters — conducts this wordless distillation of The Ring Cycle. Lorin Maazel (who later served as Music Director of the NY Phil) produced this 75-minute version of orchestral music from Wagner’s great epic — all in the original order and without adding a single note of his own.

Artist-in-Residence Yuja Wang plays the dual role of soloist and orchestra leader in this unique program. The winds of the NY Phil join in works by Janáček and Stravinsky, followed by the original jazz band version of Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue, which the composer described as a “musical kaleidoscope of America.”

The NY Phil marks the centennial of Pierre Boulez, a former Music Director and innovative programmer, by remounting one of the programs he curated and conducted. Marin Alsop leads an inventive concert bookended by Beethoven’s Leonore Overture No. 3 and Stravinsky’s Firebird Suite — two works, operatic in their scope, that evoke heroic feats of rescue. Back to the Future in Concert

Shostakovich’s Fifth journeys from haunting depths to its famously ambiguous finale. Saxophone virtuoso Timothy McAllister is the soloist in John Corigliano’s Triathlon, which was written for him. With movements centered on soprano, alto, and baritone saxophones, the piece requires — in the composer’s words — “three feats of high athletic prowess.” Cindy McTee’s Double Play is inspired by mid-20th-century big-band jazz.

Violinist Julia Fischer and pianist Jan Lisiecki are two solo stars who share a musical partnership because, says Fischer, “we are each inspired by the other one and arrive at something fresh and new, bringing in our own perspectives to a work.” Experience their chemistry as they perform sunny sonatas by Mozart and Beethoven and Robert Schumann’s turbulent, heartbreaking Violin Sonata No. 2

Felix Mendelssohn’s incidental music to A Midsummer Night’s Dream captures the spirit of Shakespeare’s beloved comedy. Internationally renowned cellist Alisa Weilerstein joins the Orchestra for a World Premiere by Thomas Larcher, whose music has been called “one of this century’s wonders” (The Times). Robert Schumann’s Second Symphony brings the concert, conducted by Nikolaj Szeps-Znaider, to a soaring conclusion.

Stravinsky’s ​Violin Concerto comes to life in the hands of Patricia Kopatchinskaja — whom The New York Times calls “a player of rare expressive energy.” Brahms spent over 20 years writing his First Symphony; by turns somber, stormy, hushed, and heroic, the work established the Romantic’s unequivocal command of the genre. Jakub Hrůša opens the program by conducting Jessie Montgomery’s anticipated Project 19 premiere.

Lisa Batiashvili performs Mozart’s Violin Concerto No. 4, a work both charming in its Classical poise and virtuosic in its technical demands. On the second half: Bartók’s fairy-tale ballet, The Wooden Prince. Written for an enormous orchestra, the piece is full of rhythmic liveliness and references to Hungarian folk music. Mozart’s Overture to The Magic Flute begins this program led by Iván Fischer.

Steven Isserlis — praised by The Strad for the “mastery and sheer joy” of his playing — joins the NY Phil for Robert Schumann’s Cello Concerto. On the podium is Simone Young, one of today’s top interpreters of Bruckner symphonies, leading  the monumental Sixth. The concert opens with Schoenberg’s Notturno for strings and harp, a lush, youthful work in the late-Romantic style.

Renée Fleming and Rod Gilfry sing Kevin Puts’s The Brightness of Light, a work created for them and based on letters between painter Georgia O’Keeffe and photographer Alfred Stieglitz​​. The NY Phil Chorus joins the Orchestra for Ravel’s Daphnis et Chloé, a hypnotic dreamscape and one of the composer’s most impressively orchestrated scores, which Juanjo Mena conducts​ ​complete​​​.

Gustavo Dudamel — the NY Phil’s future Music and Artistic Director — leads the Orchestra in this concert bookended by two powerful symphonies: Stravinsky’s Symphony in Three Movements (originally commissioned by the NY Phil) and Philip Glass’s Symphony No. 11, originally premiered on his 80th birthday. Composer and soprano Kate Soper sings in the World Premiere of a work she is writing for the NY Phil.

Gustavo Dudamel, our future Music and Artistic Director, concludes the season with ​Mahler’s Symphony No. 7,​ in some ways ​the composer’s​​ most adventurous. Experimental in structure and orchestration, it veers rapidly from eerie, mysterious night music to towering exclamations by the brass, with a full range of moods in between.
