As a festive conclusion to the Mechelen city festival Construct Europe, Casco Phil makes this dream come true, in collaboration with Drones AndLights. The starting point for this free spectacle is Georg Friedrich Handel's iconic Water Music , one of the cornerstones of the Baroque repertoire. In addition, Casco Phil put together a richly varied program around the theme of 'water', including The Moldau by Smetana, the enchanting Syrinx by Claude Debussy, and The Swan from the Animal Carnival by Camille Saint-Saëns.

Celebrate the opening of the Conrad Prebys 2024 Summer Season at The Rady Shell at Jacobs Park with the San Diego Symphony Orchestra, conductor Gemma New and pianist Olga Kern. Join the London Symphony Orchestra for an unforgettable evening at the LSO Discovery Showcase, set to take place at the Barbican on Thursday, 13 June 2024, at 7:30pm. The evening's repertoire includes John Adams' exhilarating "Short Ride in a Fast Machine," the poignant "You Will Be Found" from the hit musical Dear Evan Hansen by Benj Pasek and Justin Paul, and "Can You Hear" by Jim Papoulis, in addition to original compositions by LSO Discovery Groups. Under the baton of conductor Karen Ní Bhroin, the concert will also showcase the talents of LSO On Track Next Generation, LSO Discovery Junior and Senior Choirs, and LSO Connect, making it a vibrant showcase of the future of music.

The Royal Conservatory of Music

Two master composers provide inspiration for this concert. Schafer’s work is concerned with the last days of Robert Schumann, from the time of his first hallucinations until his death in the Endenich asylum in 1856. Adapted selections from Clara Schumann’s diaries form the monodrama in Schafer’s work. The piece incorporates fragments of Schumann’s own vocal and piano compositions including the melody he wrote down the night of his first hallucination which he claimed was dictated to him by the angels. Harmonielehre is a musical tour-de-force. In Adams’ words, his piece, “postmodern in spirit”, is “a large, three-movement work for orchestra that marries the developmental techniques of Minimalism with the harmonic and expressive world of fin de siècle late Romanticism”.

Eminent American composer John Adams returns to the Met after a decade-long hiatus for the company premiere of his acclaimed opera-oratorio, which incorporates sacred and secular texts in English, Spanish, and Latin, from biblical times to the present day, in an extraordinarily dramatic retelling of the Nativity. El Niño brings together three of contemporary opera’s fiercest champions, all of whom make highly anticipated company debuts: Marin Alsop, one of the great conductors of our time, who has led more than 200 new-music premieres; soprano Julia Bullock, a leading voice on and off stage; and pathbreaking bass-baritone Davóne Tines. Radiant mezzo-sopranos J’Nai Bridges and Daniela Mack take turns completing the principal trio. The moving, fully-staged new production also marks the Met debut of Lileana Blain-Cruz, resident director at Lincoln Center Theater, who received universal acclaim for her Tony-nominated 2022 production of The Skin of Our Teeth.

A jazz inflected foxtrot for orchestra, a saxophone concerto inspired by the legendary John Coltrane and one of Brahms’ most masterly symphonies make for an energetic and eclectic program. Saxophone master Timothy McAllister joins us for French composer Guillaume Connesson’s A Kind of Trane. Rei Hotoda brings her signature interpretive energy to Brahms’ Symphony No. 3, whose gorgeous Third Movement has been featured in multiple films and was recorded by the Ramsay Lewis Trio as You’ll Love Me Yet.

Michael Francis conducts the symphony that changed all symphonies, Beethoven’s monumental Third. No one had heard anything like it before. The work was originally called “Bonaparte” after Napoleon, but a disgruntled Beethoven hastily changed the title to “Eroica,” meaning heroic. Pianist Natasha Paremski returns to perform Shostakovich’s Piano Concerto No. 2, a glorious work that breaks free from the oppression of communist rule after the death of Stalin. The program starts with the evocative Chairman Dances: Foxtrot for Orchestra, composed by American John Adams and inspired by President Nixon’s trip to China.

Sensual and rhapsodic, Debussy’s prelude uses the solo flute to evoke the moody, dream-like atmosphere of a faun who awakens from a nap in the forest on a sunlit afternoon. In contrast with the more pastoral mood of this concert’s opening works, City Noir was inspired by the peculiar ambience and mood of Los Angeles ‘noir’ films, especially those produced in the late forties and early fifties.

LA Phil Creative Chair John Adams leads the orchestra in Stravinsky’s colorful and Impressionistic Song of the Nightingale, which is set in the court of the Emperor of China. With influences ranging from Brahms and Mozart to Sigur Rós and Radiohead, Timo Andres is a favorite young composer of Adams’ who conducts the world premiere of his concerto written for pianist Aaron Diehl. This nicely varied program features works from four choreographers performed to music of diverse styles and periods. The Concert, Jerome Robbins’s impishly funny sendup of the supposedly staid behavior of classical concertgoers, finds unexpected humor in its score of selected Chopin piano works. The program also includes Balanchine’s Ballo della Regina, performed to Verdi ballet music, which features bravura choreography that challenges even the most technically assured dancers; Peter Martins’ endlessly dynamic Hallelujah Junction, danced to a score for two pianos by the esteemed contemporary composer John Adams; and In a Landscape, a pas de deux to music by the modernist composer John Cage created by Albert Evans, a beloved longtime principal dancer with the Company who passed away in 2015.

Adams’ piece depicts a ride in a terrific sports car quickly regretted; Dukas’ setting of the Goethe poem sees a young wizard meddling in things he doesn’t understand; Schoenberg’s new work includes a battle between cello soloist and hologram; and Strauss’ epic tone poem was featured in the original A.I. gone wrong movie, 2001: A Space Odyssey.

John Adams describes his rhythmically and harmonically complex Harmonielehre as a parody “without the intent to ridicule,” with “shades of Mahler, Sibelius and Debussy.” Both pieces frame George Li's performance of the Second Piano Concerto from Rachmaninoff, arguably the hero of the lush, romantic style.

The State of California and the Bay Area itself has a unique ecosystem all its own with not only famous living composers residing and working here but their students tend to stay in the area and become well known which has led to generations of California taught and residing fabulous composers. They often use subject matter and musical inspirations are taken from their lives here, including the environment and nature which leave enough of a mark on them that when they leave they still paint the picture of what it is like to live in this great state. The piece we are featuring on this program by composer Ben Shirley does exactly that.  Ben Shirley was a student of Gabriela Lena Frank at the GLF Creative Academy of Music in Boonville, CA and his work High Sierra Sonata evokes the Eastern Sierra Mountains and the perseverance of runners who participate in high altitude running.  Ben is also a participant in the GLF "Composing Earth" project dedicated to the study of climate change, was a student at the San Francisco Conservatory of music and is a marathon runner featured in the film "Skid Row Marathon"

Be among the first to hear this powerful new NSO co-commission, performed on the 60th anniversary of President John F. Kennedy’s 1963 speech at Amherst College. The program also includes Duke Ellington’s swinging trip to Jazz-age Harlem and John Adams’ Harmonielehre, inspired by the composer’s vision of an oil tanker blasting into space.

Compositions with family ties take the Whitney stage, beginning with pre-existing works from the second generation of our Creators Corps family. Gabriel Kahane, well known for blurring the lines between rock and classical, has written a beautifully personal piano concerto for his father, acclaimed pianist Jeffrey Kahane. The piece, called Heirloom, will be performed with the LO by the senior Kahane. Our program ends with an orchestral adventure by popular minimalist composer John Adams whose third movement was inspired by a dream of his daughter (nicknamed Quackie) drifting along in the universe on the shoulder of the mysterious Mr. Eckhardt.
