"Catalogue d'oiseaux," published in 1958, is Olivier Messiaen's most extensive work after his opera "Saint François d'Assise.” This composition masterfully integrates the three main elements of Messiaen's musical language: rhythm, the relationship between sound and color, and birdsongs. The score is a collection of birdsong transcriptions and descriptive elements of the landscape, presenting a true interpretative challenge for any performer.

Since 2018, the International Bruckner Festival Linz has begun annually on 4 September, the birthday of its namesake. The birthday concert to kick off the festival always takes place in Ansfelden, the place where it all began for Anton Bruckner, where he was born in the servants' quarters of the school building and baptised on the same day in the neighbouring parish church.

In 2024, the well-wishers could hardly be more prominent: The Cleveland Orchestra, known as the most "European" of the American orchestras, and its chief conductor Franz Welser-Möst, who hails from Linz, will do the honours and pay tribute to the jubilarian with an open-air performance in the open space between the parish church and courtyard.

Join us on Saturday, May 18 for The Magic Flute for Kids, an enchanting one-hour performance hosted by Caldecott Medalist and New York Times bestselling author/illustrator Christopher Raschka in the intimate Reinberger Chamber Hall. Raschka, an opera lover and musician himself, will use projections of his beautifully illustrated book, The Magic Flute, to share the story of Mozart’s beloved opera interspersed with live musical highlights for children 7 and older.

In November 1918, Sergei Rachmaninoff arrived in his newfound homeland, the United States, after a tumultuous year fleeing the political unrest of his native Russia. Through this thoughtfully constructed program, pianist Conrad Tao presents a fascinating dialogue between Rachmaninoff’s former and present homes, discussing the power of old world and new, tradition and innovation.

One of the greatest operas ever written, Mozart’s timeless classic is about the search for truth and reason, love and enlightenment, and how power is used for good or evil. The Virtuoso Viola

Stravinsky’s ballet The Rite of Spring scandalized listeners at its premiere in 1913, but the work has since stood the test of time as one of the composer’s finest creations and one of the greatest orchestral works of the 20th century. Klaus Mäkelä pairs this showpiece with Gershwin’s toe-tapping Concerto in F, performed by esteemed French pianist Jean-Yves Thibaudet, and a cheeky curtain-raiser by Milhaud.

Critics around the world are praising Yuja Wang for her “impressive virtuosity and poise” (Boston Globe), and she has thrilled audiences worldwide with her “superhuman keyboard technique with artistic eloquence that is second to none” (San Francisco Chronicle). Almost no musical work has had such a powerful influence or evoked as much controversy as Igor Stravinsky's ballet score The Rite of Spring. The work’s premiere was scandalous. In addition to the outrageous costumes, unusual choreography, and bizarre story of pagan sacrifice, Stravinsky's musical innovations tested the patience of the audience to the fullest.

Klaus Mäkelä, “the fast-rising star of conducting,” returns to lead a program highlighting the works of British composers: Elgar’s much-loved Cello Concerto, and Walton’s outlandishly exuberant oratorio Belshazzar’s Feast, featuring celebrated baritone Thomas Hampson. A vibrant opener by Jimmy López Bellido takes listeners on a quick excursion to South America filled with festive melodies and rollicking rhythms inspired by Afro-Peruvian folk music.

Called “the fast rising star of conducting” Klaus Mäkelä returns to conduct a program highlighting the works of British conductors: Elgar’s much loved Cello Concerto, and Walton’s hugely sonic, outlandishly exuberant oratorio (featuring the celebrated baritone Thomas Hampson).

Hosted in Severance Music Center’s The Bogomolny-Kozerefski Grand Foyer, this exhibition invites visitors to explore the world of Mozart's masterpiece in a new evocative light — through Chuck Stewart's camera lens. The Magic Lens: A Photographic Journey by Chuck Stewart is a visual symphony, harmonizing three themes: the power of rhythm, presence and passion, and providing a fresh perspective on the enduring appeal of The Magic Flute. Viewers will be able to immerse themselves in the rich literal and metaphorical pictorial journeys of Stewart, navigating life's labyrinth with his magical flute — his camera.

Join Great Lakes Science Center and its partners, NASA’s Glenn Research Center and The Cleveland Orchestra, from April 6–8 for the Total Eclipse Fest 2024, a three-day celestial celebration at North Coast Harbor in downtown Cleveland. This outdoor, family-friendly event will feature hands-on science activities, a free community concert performance by The Cleveland Orchestra on Sunday, April 7, food vendors, entertainment, and free eclipse viewing glasses (while supplies last). NASA experts will be on-site to engage with the public and share ways NASA studies the sun and uses that information to understand its impact on Earth and throughout our solar system, and NASA TV will be broadcasting live from the event Monday, April 8.

Sensual and rhapsodic, Debussy’s prelude uses the solo flute to evoke the moody, dream-like atmosphere of a faun who awakens from a nap in the forest on a sunlit afternoon. In contrast with the more pastoral mood of this concert’s opening works, City Noir was inspired by the peculiar ambience and mood of Los Angeles ‘noir’ films, especially those produced in the late forties and early fifties.

The 2024 Honor Choir is composed of the top choral students from all over northeast Ohio. To participate, a student must be nominated by their school choir director based on their excellent skills as a developing musician. Participating students will take part in an all day clinic with guest conductor Marques L. A. Garrett on Saturday, March 23rd.

Isata Kanneh-Mason drew popular and critical acclaim when her debut album Romance – the Piano Music of Clara Schumann rocketed to No. 1 on the UK classical charts. Hindemith’s Mathis der Mahler is inspired by 16th-century painter Matthias Grünewald and his struggle for artistic freedom of expression in the repressive climate of his day — mirroring Hindemith’s own struggle as the Nazis attained power and repressed dissent.

Themes of nostalgia, childhood, and the passage of time abound in this whimsical concert, which concludes with Ravel’s enchanting ballet score, transporting us to the forest where Tom Thumb's trail of crumbs falls victim to various songbirds, amidst a sweetly innocent love scene between Beauty and the Beast, and concludes with an ecstatic celebration of nature in "The Enchanted Garden."

A perennial Cleveland favorite, the distinguished conductor Herbert Blomstedt is heralded for his interpretations of Beethoven and Schubert.

The Cleveland Orchestra returns to present an evening of classical wonders under the baton of Music Director Franz Welser-Möst. The world-renowned orchestra opens its performance with Oliver Knussen’s lively and colorful Cleveland Pictures, a work commissioned by The Cleveland Orchestra that saw its premiere in 2022. Violin master Nikolaj Szeps-Znaider also returns to play Bruch’s dreamy Violin Concerto, a timeless masterpiece filled with lush orchestration and technically demanding virtuosic challenges perfectly suited for a violinist of Szeps-Znaider’s caliber.
