World Orchestra Week (WOW!) kicks off with a performance by NYO2—Carnegie Hall’s national youth orchestra for younger teens, called “superbly talented” (New York Classical Review) and “a bright future for classical music” (Musical America). Conducted by Teddy Abrams—and featuring principal players from several of the nation’s top orchestras as soloists—they perform some of the concert repertoire’s most beloved works. In addition to Bernstein’s Symphonic Dances from West Side Story, Tchaikovsky’s Romeo and Juliet Fantasy Overture, and Stravinsky’s The Firebird Suite, the program includes a Carnegie Hall co-commissioned world premiere by Emmy Award–winning composer Jasmine Barnes, who has been commissioned by the New York Philharmonic, Chicago Symphony Orchestra, Washington National Opera, and many more.

The esteemed ensemble begins the concert with Barber’s Symphony No. 1, which condenses the traditional symphonic structure into a single captivating movement. Pianist Jean-Yves Thibaudet, a popular recitalist at Carnegie Hall, joins as soloist in Rhapsody in Blue as part of the iconic work’s centennial celebration. The performance concludes with Rimsky-Korsakov’s Scheherazade, a colorful concert staple based on One Thousand and One Nights.

Gustavo Dudamel conducts the National Children’s Symphony of Venezuela during Carnegie Hall’s World Orchestra Week (WOW!), which celebrates extraordinary youth ensembles from around the globe. In the first half of the program, the gifted young musicians perform John Adams’s Short Ride in a Fast Machine, Estévez’s symphonic poem Mediodía en el llano, and Ginastera’s Four Dances from Estancia, which the orchestra also performed in its unforgettable international debut at the Salzburg Festival. This Saturday-night concert on Carnegie Hall’s grandest stage is part of World Orchestra Week (WOW!), celebrating extraordinary youth ensembles from around the globe. Witness the North American debut of the Africa United Youth Orchestra (AUYO), organized by South Africa’s Mzansi National Philharmonic Orchestra. The ensemble features outstanding young artists from multiple African nations in addition to the stellar musicians from South Africa. For this landmark concert, they perform a program that includes Dvořák’s Symphony No. 9, “From the New World,” as well as South African composer Michael Mosoeu Moerane’s Fatše La Heso (My Country). This Sunday matinee concert—presented as part of Carnegie Hall’s World Orchestra Week (WOW!)—features the Beijing Youth Orchestra, an ensemble newly created by China’s National Centre for the Performing Arts (NCPA). Lü Jia, who has performed at Carnegie Hall as conductor of the renowned China NCPA Orchestra, leads this exceptional youth orchestra and the inimitable pipa virtuoso Wu Man in a program that includes both Western and Chinese orchestral works.

Featuring dedicated young musicians (ages 14–20) from the Afghanistan National Institute of Music, the storied Afghan Youth Orchestra plays both Western and traditional Afghan instruments in repertoire that includes Western symphonic works, original compositions, and traditional Afghan music. Recent tours have taken this extraordinary orchestra to Germany, France, Italy, Tajikistan, and Switzerland—including a performance at the 2023 UN Human Rights Conference—and the ensemble now returns to Carnegie Hall’s most historic stage during World Orchestra Week (WOW!).

Featuring two of today’s brightest rising stars, this duo concert in our most intimate venue thrills on every level. It’s the recital debut of violinist María Dueñas, who gave a “stupendous” performance here in 2022 with the Los Angeles Philharmonic and Gustavo Dudamel. “Dueñas was wholly captivating ... she could have drawn blood from [the violin’s] strings,” wrote The New York Times. The piece she performed to such acclaim was a new work by Carnegie Hall’s 2024–2025 Debs Composer’s Chair Gabriela Ortiz, who contributes another new work for this special occasion. On piano is Alexander Malofeev, an extraordinary artist of rapidly increasing international renown, who makes his own recital debut in March 2024.

For her Carnegie Hall recital debut, American soprano Lisette Oropesa performs a distinctive program of works by Cuban, French, and Italian composers. The intrepid orchestral ensemble The Knights continues its multi-year Rhapsody commissioning project, inspired by the centennial of Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue. The Knights invite several of today’s most visionary composers to each create an original rhapsody, which artistic directors Colin Jacobsen and Eric Jacobsen describe as “one of the most ecstatically joyful expressions of art ... [a] combination of virtuosity, improvisation, and unfettered imagination.” In this program, pianist and master improviser Aaron Diehl joins the ensemble, conducted by Eric Jacobsen, in a world premiere by Michael Schachter, a new suite by Keith Jarrett and arranged by Michael P. Atkinson, and the rhapsodic Gershwin masterpiece. The orchestra also treats audiences to Beethoven’s exhilarating Fourth Symphony.

With a dynamic performance style and use of historical bows and gut strings, the Chiaroscuro Quartet achieves a sound “so immediate, you could summon any musical line at any time for the closest of attention” (The Irish Times). In this program, the ensemble performs the last of the quintessential string quartets Mozart dedicated to Haydn (who, upon hearing it, immediately declared Mozart “the greatest composer I know, either personally or by reputation”). The quartet also performs Schubert’s monumental final string quartet, whose visceral, dynamic intensity and technical variety make it an especially enticing piece.
